--Dinner horns are now entirely dis
penred with in some parts of the county.
Provisions ore so scarce that waeucvtr
a dinner horn is heard the neighbors all
gather in to share the meal with their
more fortunate brother.
—It is said that in some sections of the
couuty all the bread is made with a tea
made from white o.,k bark. The ex e
of the bark makes the bread more nutri
lions and half as much satisfies the crav
ings of the stomache. The blackberry
crop promises temporary relief.
—Mr. Peter B'ker killed last week at
Hardy’s Baw mill, about two miles and a
hilf from town, with a rock, a very large
hawk, measuring 4 ft. 5 iu. from tip to
tip. The hawk was nertly seventy-five
yards off and the first rock thrown crip¬
pled it, while the second hit square on
the bend aud dispalchsd it. Mr. B. is
the champion thrower of the county.
—Several mad dogs have been killed in
the county recently. Bread is scarce.
—A party of fishermen iu the Upper
19 h district succeeded in catching one
hundred pounds of fi-h one night last

—A correspondent informs u» that Mr
J. C. Meeks, of Ellerslie district has b,x
acres of cotton that was chopped ont ou
the 4th of May aud is now tuli of squares.
Every one who sees it is astonished. It
shows his knowledge of good farming.
—Hamilton felt her importance last
Sunday with a special train full of people
visiting from each end of me road. We

INDEPENDENT DEMOCRATIC NEWSPAPER.
HAMILTON, GA., FRIDAY, JUNE 3 , 1881 .
Colonel Avery’s New Hook.
“H. W. G.’’in Atlanta Constitution.^
Colonel I. W. Avery has about,
ready tor the press filial must
prove to be a most entertaining
book. It is a history for the past
t went v-five years in Georgia, mod
eled somewhat niter the ‘'Memo.
nes”'of Colonel ,V. IE Snaths.
Hardly formal and steady enough
for history, it will be more con-e
quentinl than mere personal gossip.
It is a shame and blot upon tile
"fi"’* 1 »< S> 1 " - Stale that we have no
complete history, recounting the
deeds , f her sous, the progress of
her institutions or the wisdom and
sincerity of her life. As then*
seems to be no prospect forgetting
such a work as a whole, iho next
best thing is to take it 10 sections
cr scraps.
The perion selected by Colonel
Avery covers the most dramatic
part of Georgia’s history. It cov¬
ers tlie lurid and turbulent days
that preceded the war between the
States—the whole of that, war u
sell, in which from the Hist to last
Georgia bore conspicuous part,
furnishing many of its leaders and
the theater for its most terrific and
decisive st,niggles—the strenuous
and bitter contest over reconsU'uc
tion that followed, and the glorious
era oj reliahitilation in which we
are now living. Indeed, (E loin 1
Avery lias ihe elements and oppor¬
tunity for the making of a great
book, one that will live to the hon¬
or ol his State and himself.
