■- shows grit. It j

Trie Star Chamber deals lightly
with character. There are those who
never kiow the value of an article till
they possess it.
One of our Harris county boys is
endeavoring to accomplish the g:s
tiouomical feat of eating an egg a day
for thirty days. He has already eaten
twenty eggs, and says he does not
hanaer st..«.r mem h.-.e he once did.
Bill Arp intimates that an educated
negro is more apt to be candidate for
tiie cltai.igang than an ignorant one.
Isn’t it strange that leads the white
man to eminence, and usefulness, if
followed by the black man leads in a
reverse defection.
If wo should have occasion to al¬
lude to tiie excellent qualities of ;
horse of all work, \vc should be sur¬
prised if brought to task for disparaging
the noble racer. Yet not more surpris
ed than at the editGr of the Columbus
Enquirer who objects to our words of
commendation of the .Atlanta Uni¬
versity, claiming that we underrate
the worth of several female colleges in
the State. These institutions are
justly a pride to the state and have
turned out ladies of “varied accom¬
plishments,” who are ornaments tc
society-, and yet not one of these in¬
stitutions is similar to the University
and we still hold that it is a matter
of regret that there is for whites none
similar to it in the state.

Our PubHe Schools ,
Having been permitted to examine
the neat and well kept books*of Mr.
W..FI. Spence, School Commissioner
of Harris county, we are enabled to
make the following report. There
were in the county last year 53 free
schools for whites and 40 for colored
children. There were in attendance
upon these 1261 white children and
1791 colored. Of the whites 668
were males 593 females, Of the
blacks 926 were males 865 females.
•
The school fund for the year was
$4,53.214, of which $2,698.39 was
derived from the State and vi.S53.75 i :
riom the poll tax. The amount on
polls speaks volumes m favor of our
Tax Collector and is very large for
an off year in politics. The whole
showing for the county is a good one, |
speaking well both for the board of j j
education and the County School
Commissioner. The fund lias all
been paid out or is in the Treasury
awaiting the teacher.
