VOL. X.—NO. 19.
The fVew and Air. Stephen*,
It seems as if there was room for
two political parties, in Georgia. The
organized or bourbon democrats con
tend that the principle and not tfre
man should command support. Th*
independent democrat or coalitionist
says that corrupt men cannot repre¬
sent good principles.
To illustrate'The bourbon press
say that Mr. Stephens is a very proper
sort of man, a statesman of ability, a
democrat in good standing, withal a
man against whom few objection*
could be raised. If he will reject the
nomination of the coalitionists if it
is tendered, they see no objection to
his nomination by the convention of
bourbons, provided a majority of the
delegates are willing.
r.ie independents have set their
hearts on having Mr. Stephens for
Governor and its seems now to be
advisable for them to put off their
convention until after that of the
bourbons, for if he should obey the
mandate of the bourbon press and
reject their tendered nomination, his
chances for obtaining the other would
still be doubtful.
The leading dailies are distressing
themselves very much over the situa
tion and advise Mr. Stephens very
much as if they thought, him incapa
ble of “toting his own skillet." The. '
coa ii t j on j sts have but little of our
h y, but it seems ridiculous for
sensible men to oppose a candidate
because they favor him.
\ f Mr. Stephens can stand on the
pi at f orms 0 f both conventions, we
see no objection to making his
J
tion unanimous. A* for shall . .
us, we
cheerfully follow his lead.

In an interview with a reporter i* f the

clearly defines his position —

Removal of Hood.
Last Saturday we had a conversation
with an inflaaatial eitisaa of Hood and
one ot its most prominent business man,
upon the question of tbe removal of Hood
to Ohipley, the present terminus of the
0. Jt K R. railroad, about ana mile and a
half further north. Ha announced the
determination ef hi* hoaaa to move at
one* end gar* hi* raaaona therefor. -
“By going farther north” h* said “we
esn command a larger territory for trad*.
We will be much nearer to *11 south of ns
end north of th* mountain then Hamil¬
ton, aa the moenteia outs off competition
there and the removal brings nt oloaer hy
a mite and s halt te a large territory now
trsdingetLaUreege andHogansville. A* to
trade on either side, we will be as near
Whitesville end a mil* nearer th* Sul¬
phur ftpring* end Greensville.
“In the matter of reads Chipley i*
much more eoasesible then Hood and th*
roads are better. They esu be hept in
good condition with lea* expense than the
principal road* leading lo Hood.
“Thee Gnipley is * better location for
a town then Hood. Hood lies in a bot¬
tom or valley. Ghintey is upas a higher
elevation end must become * summer re¬
sort.
“Ohipley I think il bound to have th*
poet office. It will be a saving of three
miles each trip on the two star route*
now centering at Hood. On# of these
has a daily and tbe other a Sri weekly
sertiae. Th* department will be certain
to consider this saving of thirty miles a
week in the serviee and ultimately remove
the office te Ohipley.
The buildings of Hood are all plain and
sheep end to remove the town now will
mvolve bnt little loss to all. Heroie
treatment is oar remedy. It is better to
move now than lo dry up after w* hive
invested more largely in improvement*.
We can use our old bouses in building
new ones and aa th# question tff removal
is bound to be agitated to lb* ii jnry of
Hood, it ia our purpose to move at one*
and make the beat of it.’’
There were about the reasons advanoad
hy this gentleman. Mneh interest i*
nanifested by the people i* the question
>f removal and the town ta perhaps equal
y divided pro end son. How U will be
rattled remain* to be seen.
