The .tricks were .all fixed last. T ties.-'

campaign.
The colored folks have a public
entertainment at the r Methodist
church, Friday night.
Johnnie Mobley is dispose 1 to brag
on his oats when he visits Columbus.
They’ll do to brag ^on too, even at
home.
Mr. Ben Kimbrough’s oats thresh¬
ed out seventy bushels per acre and
many were left in the field and some
in the chaff.
People of the Lower 19th now
come to town by Ivingsboro, the
bridge at Brewster & Hudson’s mill
being down.
Dr. Mitchell, Administrator, sold
the city residence of the late Alvira
Johnson, Tuesday for $46, to Judge
J. F. C. Williams.
Dr. A. B. Copeland, whose condi¬
tion a week ago was such as to occa¬
sion no httle uneasiness among his
friends, is much improved.
The second quarterly meeting for
the Hamilton circuit will be held at
Bethel church on the second Satur¬
day and Sunday ip this month,
Monroe Jones has a field of oats
that, will average as well as many of;
our town patches, from which he ex
pects forty or fifty bushels per acre.
Dr. J. W. Hinton will address the
Woman’s Missionary Society at the
Methodist church in Hamilton on
the night of the second Sunday. Pub
lie cordially invited to-attend.
With the Columbus and Atlanta
Air Line railroad a fixed fact and our
College building ready for the accept¬
ance as a branch of .the State Uni
versity, Hamilton will begin to put
-on city airs and boom.
A gentleman who has recently re¬
turned from a four through the west¬
ern part of .the county, reports the
farmers happy over a bountiful grain
crop and ho-wful of the cotton and
corn prospect. ,
The yourjg ladies ©f thg Recreation
Society gave another of their yery
enjoyable public entertainments at
the hospitable home pf Dr. Franklin
Barnes, last Friday evening. AH who
were present spent a I'leasant even
ing, the ladies acquitting .themselves
in a handsome manner.
Captain L. i.. Stanford issued in¬
vitations to a levee at tire college last
'Tuesday morning, to wlrch several of
the young men of the town respond¬
ed, Six handsome columns for the
.front of thy building were soon put
in position, and we can now form an
idea of tbe handsome appearance the
building wil present when completed,
,as we have every assurance to believe
it soon will be.
Curtis Beall has again placed jus
under obligations for well ripened
peaches of tire Amsden, Alexander,
Beatrice and Early 1 0 also varieties.
When we remember that it is just as
.easy to grow thpsc peaches as any
other, that they will bear two years
after they are put out if properly
treated, and that they can be bought
for 15 centerpiece, is it nut astonish
ing that all our lam,s ure not full of
them.
Several men engaged ffi repairing
the bridge over the pond at Brewster
,& Hudson’s null on the Mulberry,
liad a very narrow escape last week.
While seven workmen were engaged
on the bridge in removing a heavy
piece of timber, the framework gave
way and all were -pre tipi tab'll into
-the pond. Mr. W illiam Hightower,
one of the contractors, was -more st
verely bruised than any of the others
and was under the water some time
before he was able to extricate him
:se!f from the debris that fell upon
him. That all escaped with their
dives seems, under the circumstances
almost miraculous.

The Columbus Times is disposed
to agree with as that it is not good
policy to allow over half a-milhon ©f
dollars to lie idle in the state treasury,
and thinks the legislature is to blame. !
\Ve cannot think It is wholly so, as at
its last session it-received n * official
notificitioa of the p-ob ibility- of tliie
accumulation of so large a surplus, nqr
any request from the executive to
provide for such a-contingency. Ip
deed the state house officers and a
•committee appointed by the house
figured,out a possible deficit of sev¬
eral thousand dollars. As there has
been no extraordinary addition to thsp
st tie’s funds from regular channels,
nor any from any other spurce, if We
except the bonds paid in by the pur
chasers of the Macon & Brunswick
railroad, which w-onkl still leave the
surplus largely over half a million
dollars, we insist .that There was some
very poor figuring done by tljat com
mittee and the .officers who advised
it. As the larger the surplus in the
treasury fhc xfiore potent the friend¬
ship of those advising officials, the
matter looks to ns someyvliat suspi
cions.
The pext legislature should speed¬
ily adopt a measure looking to thg
disposition of the surplus and any¬
one that may accumulate in the fu¬
ture, and it ought to be devoted to
the reduction of the bonded debt of
the State. Twenty five 4housan r d
'dollars might have been saved to the
tax payers of the state by the enact¬
ment of such a'law by the last Legis¬
lature.
