pographical appearance. It is now
a pretty paper, just such as that no¬

The Hamilton Journal has been
enlarged and very much improved in
every particular. It is now one of
the sprightliest among our weekly
exchanges and deserves a libera!
patronage from the progressive peo¬
ple of Harris county.—Columbus En¬

The Macon Telegraph has been
wrongly informed. Capt, 'Bom Neal
has been nominated for the Senate
in this district and not Captain Ey
curgus Stanford. 'Bo keep himself
correctly informed of the doings in
this part of the world the editor of
the Telegraph must read the Jour¬

A Noble Woman.
A Jasper correspondent to the At
lanta Constitution writes to that pa¬
per as follows: “A man by the
name of Nick Wilson, was convicted
at Marietta of a crime of which lie
was sentenced to the penitentiary
for five years and he was assigned to
the Marietta and North Georgia
Kailroad. He had a wife and five
children. His wife from girlhood had
the reputation of being a very devout
Christian. Her mortification and
grief when her husband was sent to
the penitentiary was intense, but, wo
man like, she clung to her husband,
and visited him about once every
month, always urging him to conform
to the rules and ^regulations, and to
veform, Some nine months ago
Wilson took advantage of a guard
and made his escape. He left the
country and went to Kentucky. His
whereabouts were unknown except to
his wife. She finally prevailed upon
h m to return, surrender himselt and
serve out his sentence. Last Tues
day morning Mrs. Wilson notified
General Philips that she wanted to
meet hurt with-her husband, and that
was the first intimation General Phil
ips had received of Wilson’s being
in the State, or, of his whereabouts.
She brought him into Marietta on
the public square in ojien daylight,
and told General Philips that she had
prevailed upon her husband to re¬
turn; that she knew that the convicts
uvrt well treated on the Marietta and
North Georgia Railroad, and, while
she could have gone off to her hus¬
band and have been with him all the
umv, she knew that life would be no
more satisfaction all the time hiding
an 1 skulking at und trying to evade
• tnv pi ialty of the law. and she said
she kre.v that she could not rear her I
c.nldryn in that respecubility she so
much desired, when they were all the
{•me being pt-l i-d and hauled from
post to pillar with the consciousne: 5
of :U-:r lUhcr's being an escaped
tonvict. and thru fore she desired
him to go back to the penitentiary
and served out ins sentence and then
u turn home ati<l live a different lire,
and help her to raise up the little
ones that she lwd labored so hard
to support all the time ol his absence.

The ChrixHan Index.
We have on our table a late issue
of the Christian Index, a splendid |
16-page paper, beautifully illustrated
and ably edited. It is published at
Atlanta, Ga., by Messrs Jas. P. Har¬

ment is under the management of

profound thinkers and writers of the
century. He is assisted by a coqis
of distinguished editors and contrib¬
utors, making each edition of the
Index teem with instructive and in
teresting matter. It has distinct de¬
partments for Alabama, Florida and
Northern Georgia,each presided over
by men of ability, who are favorites
in their respective sections. In ad¬
dition to these it has departments,
severally, devoted to the “Children,”
the “Sunday-School,” the “House¬
hold” and to “Agriculture.” This is
the paper for the family. It has
something good for every reader.
The number before us contains,
among a great many other tiling, re¬
ports of proceedings of the Baptist
State Conventions of Alabama and
Mississippi, which will be found very
interesting. Among the illustrations
is a likeness of the great American
poet, Longfellow.
We have arranged to club with
The Index on suah terms as enables
us to offer that paper and this for |
