Local Briefs. !
—Miss Elouise Bedell is visiting
her sister, Mrs. S. R. Murphy.
—The city sires have again been
agonizing with the streets.
—Shade trees about town were
badly demolished Saturday night.
—Our friend Wm. Mathews bad
to face Sunday’s storm—and it a girl,
too.
—Misses Ella Barnes and Sallie
Howard left this week to attend
school in New Hope church neigh¬
borhood.
—A very' severe wind and rain
storm prevailed throughout the state
Saturday night last. Much damage
was done to crops.
—The first bale of the new cotton
■crop was brought in last Thursday,
the 7th, by Mr. Will Houghton. It
was sold to (Jowsert & Co., at i i|c.
.
-The boys all went down on a |
Special train to hear the great com- ;
inoner, and all returned well pleased
w.tti their trip.
-—The six sweet potatoes brought
us two weeks ago by Mr. Seab Web¬
ster, that filled a peck measure, are
still the largest we have seen.
.—Mr. A. D. Anderson brought us
yesterday a stalk of corn that divi¬
ded about a foot from the ground,
making two branches, each ot which
produced a good sized ear.
—Farmers with whom we have
conversed, variously estimate the
damage of the storm to the cotton
c,op at f™, M .o nventy five pe,
cent.
—Our.telephone wire had several
trees blown across it Sunday morning
and was badly broken, but we have
succeaded in. re-establishing commu
niriftUcn. .
—Curtis Beall has been appointed
postmaster at LaGrange. Curtis

enough to make a good postmaster,
and if he were only half as good a
democrat as he is a republican, we
could pronounce him a model colored
citizen. If a negro, or even a re¬
publican was requisite for the place,
we know of none we would prefer to
Tim.
—Mr. William Garrett, last week,
had the misfortune to have his leg
broken and his hand very severely
hurt, by being run over by a wagon.
The team he was driving became
frightened and ran, and he, not hav¬
ing a firm hold, endeavored to jump
out, when something entangled him
and he fell under the wheels. He
was hauling for the chair factory in
Ellerslie district.
Consider our hat lifted in acknowl¬
edgement of the many ktiid words
about the Journal by our brother
editors and friends.

—Sore eyes is an epidemic, and i
unusually ; severe.
_ Mr Georee Lvnch after a short
visit to his mother recently returned
^ ^ ^ Jn Cedartown .
—One more added to the popula
tion of Harris. A bottle of “sooth¬
ing syrup” will insure a little quiet
rest for little Johnnie Moultrie, the
happy father.
—Cotton is opening fast and the
farmers are busily engaged picking
and reducing the fleecy staple to
lint.
-It is gratifying to note a revival
in educational interest. The long
sought object is in view at last; all
the children of the community are ; !
attending school. To accomplish
this ena it required seven different |
schools the extremes of which are I
not more than seven miles.
-The increased area and special j
attention given to the potatoe ami
other seemingly insignificant crops
denotes a realization of the impor
tance these crops are to the self sus
tenance of the farm, The farmer
heretofore has devoted too much of
his time to the cultivation of the cot
ton plant. When he increases the
area in these small ciops such as
peas, pumpkins, potatoes, cane &c.,
he increases his income, increases
our exports and consequently de
creases the imports from the west.
This ig ^ proper way to make a
success at fanning and the only way
by which a farmer can come forward
demand his rights, thereby assuming
his proper position in life.
—An almost irresistable wind pass
ed through this section last Sunday
morning before day blowing down
fences, trees, out houses and doing
other considerable damage. To-day
the bottom corn is overflowed and
blown downisugar cane is lying flat and
cotton looks like a log had been roll
ed over it Vennor’s prediction has

-A man in this section who has
an aversion to a lame b quantity cf
and who always , expressed 11- his
water,
indignation at the impiety of manners
and others who h»d the presumption
to go “meandering” about .he
world, was riding alone on horse
raford ed a ford r in :t^/T the creek « he passed
only by descending a steep bank.
Now this man, afraid of being duck¬
ed a little, had no inclination what
ever to ride down the bank, so he
fell into a serious meditation as to
his best mode of advancing. At last
lie struck upon an idea which operat¬
ed thus: He dismounted, clucked
to his mule and bade him proceed
into the creek. He then led him up
to the bank and concluded to test
the springing capacities ot his upright
limbs. But the animal not recogniz¬
ing the huge bulk of such a rapid
velocity moved his position just in
time to observe his master plunge
headlong into the stream, Follow
him with your imagination as he
plods his way to the farther shore « a
sadder and a wiser man.” Next time
he will ride the mule, This pian
meets the hearty approval of
Frank.
