DOGS AND HOGS.
Report to Cutaula Grange.
From long residence and observa¬
tion, ! estimate there are 30 dogs to
the square mile in Harris county. It
is about twenty miles square and
contams 400 square miles. There
are then 13,000 dogs.
I estimate 20 hogs to the square
mile, or 8.000. One hog of 100 lbs.
can be raised on the food for one
dog. Kill 10,000 dogs and leave
2,000, and for every dog killed sub¬
stitute a pig, which wi 1 add 10,000
hogs to the S,oco, making 18,000.
The 10,000 pigs fed cn the food re¬
quired. jbi the dogs, will make one
million pounds additional meat, 100
cents to the pig which will give 100 lbs.
additional meat to every man, woman
and child, black, white, and colored,
of 10,000 people—about the number
in the county.
A hard working renter a^ked me a
few days since, “what he could do to
i catch up.” I replied, $200 of cash
value?, will support you and wife and
two children, and has done it this
year; but you have to pay $300. You
have three dogs you have fed ail the
year and have caught three opossums
You have no hog. Go kill two dogs
| and get you two pigs, and pen them
I at Christmas, and prepare your gar
| den well, and begin at the door steps
! and prepare plats of ground for pota¬
toes, corn, peas, sorghum &e., to ex¬
tent of i £ or two acres, and get your
wife a keen hoe and plant.in season
1 all vegetables,substantial and prolific,
Irish and sweet potatoes and barley
and let your wife step up by your
side where God put her, and, with
j united heart and hand you can do it.
I Two hundred dollars will support
| you. But the merchants put on $100
: to let you have the $200, and you
•' must make $300 to pay it. How to
! rid of this $100? Ho as I have told
I you, and save the $100, and still
