Local Griefs.
Several prominent business men
of Columbus came up to Hamilton
Tuesday evening.
As an advertising medium the
Journal is hard to beat. A twenty
line notice, published one time, was
answered by more than twenty let
ters. There is not a family in the
county where it ought not to be read
and not a great many where it is.not.
Mr. Ed Stephens, railroad agent at
this point, inlorms us that the ship¬
ment of cotton from September 1st,
to the 14th, was 1411 bales, being
219 less than the corresponding date
of last year. There are several
hundred bales in our warehouses.
It affords us pleasure to call the
attention of our readers to the card
of the well known Pioneer Stores, of
which Co’. I. Joseph is President.
All Harris county merchants know
him, and the large patronage given
his house is fairly deserved by low
prices and courteous treatment.
Representative J. E. D. Shipp, of
Chattahoochee, has our thanks for
the annual report for the Georgia
Academy for the Blind.
Maj. J. M. McNeil, of the Colum¬
bus bar, came up on legal business
and spent Monday night in town.
Mr. G. W. Ely, travelling passen
gyr agent of the Star and Crescent
route to Texas, visited his old home
Monday. Any of our readers con¬
templating a visit to Texas would do
well to write to him at Montgomery,
Ala., for time table, rates, &c.
Mr. Pittman, representing the At¬
lanta Constitution,-the best newspa¬
per in the south, paid us a pleasant
call Wednesday.
A gentleman informed us a few
days ago that he had lost 5,000 lbs.
of 'pork this fall, in not having hogs

The College Fair is now the talk
of town and county.
President Branham spent Tuesday
night in town, He will move here
with his family in a few weeks.
We predict that the college will
open with not less than one hundred
pupils, and the roll will number near¬
ly twice as many before the term
closes.

Opposite the Rankin House, Columbus, Georgia.
The best arranged Photograph Rooms in the South. Pictures made re
gardless of cloudy weather. All work warranted to give satisfaction. The
prettiest back grounds in the city. Every possible arrangement for the
comfort and convenience of visitors from the country. Prices as low
the lowest. The people of Harris are invited to call when in the city.
Festival Notes.
It was a success.
It gives the ladies high hopes for
their approaching fair for the college.
The Columbus delegation added
no less to the pleasure than to the
profits of the occasion.
Col. I. Joseph was the first man to
see the elephant.
The esthetic taste of Messrs Lu
thar Frazier, Thomas Chappell and
James Kyle, of the Columbus dele¬
gation, was early displayed in their
button hole boquets.
Col. Wm. Redd caught all sorts of
animals on his fish hook. He carried
home a complete menagerie in min
ature.
Judges Kimbrough and Hudson
showed a weakness for the substan
tials.
Some of the younger brothers dis¬
played a not more esthetic taste.
Wick Sparks was voted the hand¬
somest manspresent and a box of
cigars. He deserved it.
His staunchest supporters were
repaid for services in grapes at 95c a
bunch.
The syllabub was the first article
exhausted. Capt. Billy Johnston
could tell why.
Over four hundred ballots pro¬
nounced Miss Willie Copeland the
most popular young lady.
Will Walker, the belle of Cataula
represented that prosperous city.
The ladies were dressed exquisite¬
ly, and our limited space only forbids
a detailed account of their silks,
satins and diamonds.
Misses George, of Marietta, and
Minnie Johnson and Rebecca Sterne,
of Columbus, added to the occasion
by the sunshine of their presence.
To Max Wolfson and his accom¬
plished lady is due no small credit
for the grand success achieved.
The whole expenses amounted to
forty-five cents. The receipts to
nearly ninety dollars.
Henry Sterne was telling of his
letter out of the festive P. p. “What
was it, Henry?” queried a by-stander.
“Ten cents,” was the apt response.
M. Wolfson is the boss auctioneer
The ladies have bid for his services
at the College Fair.
Willis Fortson was the happiest
man out.
Joe Hadley bid freely for the
scraps.
The condition of the cemetery
ought to weigh heavier on the con¬
sciences of our townspeople, than
the sin of a raffle for a few cakes at
ten cents a chance.

December, at the Court House, to

All donations of every description,
country produce, hardware, dry-goods,
family groceries, etc., will be thank¬
fully received by any of the ladies.
Help is earnestly solicited from every
advocate of education, enterprise
and the advancement of tbe general

rounding country.

They Do Say
That the stock of boots and shoes,
of J. Marion Estes & Son., is equal
in point of merit to any in the city
of Columbus.
That they make a specialty of fine
work, and their experience in the
trade enables them to tell a good ar¬
ticle in buying, and risk nothing in
a full guarantee when selling.
That they are content with a fair
profit on what they sell, and their
prices are always low.
That their fall styles are now in
and their invitation for an examina¬
tion out.
That you will save money by pat¬
ronizing them when you would clothe
your extremities.
Leads the Procession.
Everybody liked the circus, but
those who got their new suit of Thom
as, the clothier were the best satis¬
fied. They were conscious of having
obtained a bargain, for he sells only
the best and he who gets the best
gets a bargain, and when a man gets
a bargain, he is open to and capable
of more enjoyment than at any other
time. But Thomas not only sells
good clothing at low prices, but is
served by young and handsome.
Salesmen with whom it is a pleasure
to deal. They know how to fit you
up in style and treat you fairly. All
in all, Thomas is the place to buy
durable clothing, for he leads the
procession.
