NEW YORK LETTER.
Nkw Yobk Nov 21, 1882
The initiated men about town are
much amused by the statements of
penny-a-liners in newspapers which
seek to curry favor with the lowest
classes that American society would
not receive Mrs. Langtry. It strikes
me that when “society” went on its
knees before such very small fry as
Oscar Wilde, who was rated below
par even in upper Bohamia in Lon¬
don, they ought not to set themselves
above such a woman as Mrs. Lang¬
try, who, whatever the scandal-mong¬
ers ina y say about her is at all events
a lady of gentle birth, and is one of
the shining lights of that society in
Fashionable London, where all good
Americans who go abroad hope to
look in if they are not actually ad¬
mitted. The truth is that the lady
has been literally overwhelmed with
invitations, as might be expected.
For, to obtain such a card exclusive¬
ly for her receptions would be a great
feather in the cap of a leader of so¬
ciety. But the lady works so hard to
obtain success in her profession that
she has no time indulge in social dis¬
sipation. It may be that she offend¬
ed pushing ladies by these refusals,
but in this respect she is like Bum
hardt, who likewise remained a social
recluse during her stay in this coun¬
try. Mrs. Langtry has come over here
for work and as her sojourn is but
brief, she has not time for play.
The Stewart Memorial Cathedral
in Garden City, is rapidly approach¬
ing completion, and a magnificent
specimen of Gothic art it will be.
Will the remains of its founder, the
prince the . spot
dry-goods evei rest in
destined for them ? God and Mr,
Hilton only know. The work of the
masons and the workers in stone is
finished, and the wonderfully beauti¬
ful wo§id carving in the interior har¬
monizes in a truly artistic manner
with the exterior. The vault where
the remains of the founder and his
family are to rest is as well lighted
as the rest of the crypt. At the ends
and sides are stained windows repre
senting biblical scenes. Four organs
are placed in different parts of the
church, and if its acoustical proper¬
ties are perfect, the musical ear will
find nothing to be desired. The ma¬
jority of the windows are stained with
small figures but the thirteen in the
immediate vicinity of the sanctuary
and the pulpit show almost the life
size pictures representing the Good
Shepheied and the twelve apostles.
The date of the dedication has not
yet been fixed, but it is in the near
future.
The stores are selling out all their
superfluous material at almost an y
price and getting ready for Christmas
trade, for which they wilK exhibit
an unusually large number of novel¬
ties. One of the most charming ad¬
ditions to bric-a-brac ornaments is
shortly to be introduced. It consists
of an open music book French bris
que, the edges of the leaves aesthet¬
ically curled, the lettering antique,
and two grey doves with their necks
craned, beaks wide open, and their
feet on their feet on tip toe, endeavor
tat *« decipher the character., and do
justice to the music. Another nov¬
elty in china is a fisherman at sea in
a basket trying to haul out an inquis¬
itive fish at whom he is making faces.
There is an immense variety 01 lamps
and lamp shades among the latter,
but the most pleasing ones are etched
designs upon plain porcelain, or the
covers of old lace, in which charac¬
teristic medallions form part of the
cittern paiteiii.
Ladies in search of something new
to maice for Christmas, may find a
suggestion here. A very charming
and at the same time useful sofa pillow
may be made to resemble a flour sack,
almost full, and tied around the top
with a cord. The material best suit
ed , is . dark , , green plush, , , with . , a finely , ,
| designed monogram wro-lght in the
centre. The facing around the top
of the sack is delicate pink satin, and
