improved the appearance of h:s res¬

Mr. J. 3. Duke, one of our rising
Harris county boys, is teaching the
male academy at LaFayette, Ala.
Judge Williams received last Fri¬

elect county officers.
Henry Goetchius, Fsq., President
of the Columbus Public Library, was
in our city on professional business
last Friday.
Harris county farmers are still
borrowing money from the northern
loan associations. It is well enough,
if they will only prudently prepare
f or pay day.
Messrs C. L. Dendy, S. M. Bran
non and J. H. Booker were elected
delegates to the State Agricultural
Convention at Macon, by the Harris
county agricultural society, which
m et on the first Tuesday m the
month. They are leading men and
farmers, who will represent the coun
tv iy with Willi credit ci curt.
Don’t forget the county agncultu

day in February, at to, a. m. Come
out to it.

part few months we have chronicled
some extraordinary results of this
crop, and our files show that these
extraordinary results have been pro¬
duced without intermission on Har¬
ris county soil for no less than ten
years. Every year, however, the no¬
tice is about the same. “On one
fourth of an acre Mr. Samuel Live
athome has raised this ‘'ear cane
enough to make ioo gallons of syrup
for which he gets 75ets a gallon.
This beats cotton raising" Such is
the usual notice, such the comment.
In the face of the oft demonstrated
fact that from 300 lo 700 gallons ol
syrup, never worth less than 50 cts. a
gallon, can be made from a single
acre, with more certainly and less
labor than a bale c#cotton, why is it
the county continues to buy most of
her syrup from Florida and New
Orleans ?

College Notes.
The lower portion of the college
building is now occupied by the aca
domical corps, and the work of in
struction is well under way. Classes j
have been arranged upon the proper
collegiate basis, and the courses are
adapted to the requirements for en
trance to the State University.
The military feature of the college
is designed to secure ease and grace
and dignity on the appointed part of cadets. 1
Officers have been tempo
rarily and the company is drilled ev
ery i afternoon. There are now thirty
cadets, who, when fully uniformed r i
! and furnished with the necessary
1 outfit of guns by rhe state, will make
! | a handsome appearance.
Classes have been organized in
the languages, ancient and modern,
the students entering with zeal into
| all work of linguistic nature. Latin,
a
Greek, French and German classes
recite every day.
The college has now ample ac¬
commodations for seating all students
who may apply for admission. • The
neat and substantial Victor Folding
and Lock desks are to be furnished
the college, and within a few days
the institution.will be able to accom
rnodate 150 pupils.
A few young ladies of Hamilton
have entered special classes in the
languages to review the work of their
student days.
