The wife of one of our colored
blacksmiths, Dcyrk Riser, was deliv
«red of a 14 pound child last week.
Hamilton is a healthy place on ba¬
bies.
Mr. Grant, of Valley 1 ’lains, has a
curiosity in a calf four weeks old
that has no hair, is of a brownish col¬
or, and very much resembles a young
elephant in appearance.
We do not believe the o;,, crop of
Harris county will be anything short
of that of last year. Only the most
unfavorable weather can prevent the
seeding of a very large area in spring
oats, which a large majority of our
planters consider a surer crop than
the fall sowing.
Mr. W. R. Cardwell, a former cit¬
izen of Harris county, died at Paint
Rock, Texas, on the 19th of Janua¬
ry. An obituary notice will be pu 5
lis hed next week.
The fence around the cemetery
will add much to the appearance of
a much neglected piece of public
property. It will soon be up.
Our blacksmiths are cutting prices
and now shoe a horse all around for j
only 75 cents, furnishing " shoes and
nails.
Vv r . R. Walker has been acting as !
railroad agent here for a few days, j
vice Col. E. T. Stevens who has been
visiting Columbus.
We have received another lot of
job type and are prepared to print
letter, note and bill-heads, and circu¬
lars in handsome style at low prices.
We invite the orders of our mer¬
chants.
A few thousand of those fresh
garden seeds still on hand, to be
given free to our prompt paying sub
scribers.
Johnny Mobley has the finest
wheat patch in the county. It is
high enough to hide a rabbit.
Much grain throughout the county
has been killed by cold. A slight
advance in the pi jee of cotton and
some of the patches will not be re¬
sown before fall.
W. A. Godwin, one of the clever¬
est salesmen of Columbus, was in
our c : ty Wednesday.
Henry Pitts visited Florida last
week. ,

College Notes.
The college is attracting' pupils
from the surrounding country at a
very gratifying rate. Applications
have been received from Columbus
and other points beyond the limits of
Harris county,
The cadets are drilled every after
noon during the week, except Satur
day, i from r four r until ,-ii- five o • clock. i , r\c Of
fleers have been appointed to serve
for the present term. Cadet W. D.
Williams is the newly y appointed Ad
jutant of the company.
A school of Telegraphy is one of
the additions proposed to the college,
It will be practically taught, and wid
prove a very desirable does, the feature, practical in- j
creasing, as it |
benefits to be derived from educa
tion.
Several citizens of Hamilton have
visited the college building within
the past week, to inspect the improve
ments lately made. It is the general
verdict that the interior of the col
lege has been handsomely finished.
The company of cadets is gradu¬
ally increasing in numbers, and will
be able to present a fine appearance
at some of the military exhibitions
in the near future.

Farmers are availing themselves of
the fair weather.
Prof. Key’s school opened last,
Monday with a good attendance and
the prospect of many more students.
Prof. I. W. Hill opened with 25

more when the weather settles.

Brewster T. has abandoned town

W. H. Spettce, who has been quite
sick, is very much improved.

It is a common occurrence
Cats to return to their old home, but
Henry Boyd had one to come to his
new home, three weeks after he had
moved. Supposes it followed the
dog, which had been going to and
from the old place.
Torn Crutchfield’s shop has not
been covered, but it looks sooty,
shoppy and altogether business likg.
The quilting at Rev. Seals Askew’s
was a merry occasion for the young
folks, and the needle was plied with
a nimbleness and zeal peculiar to
our Beach spring maidens. I he
feast was sumptuous and the party
