Mr. W. N. Maddox, of Harrs
coun'v has brought 'o town in the
lust week eight hundred horse col -1
lars made from the oark of tne beech, '
noolar atd other trees. In the man
iificture of them be used a Cooper !
eng ; ne in getting the bark from the
limb, and also in the twisting of it
afterward By this means he can
make a hundred a day. As these
collars always find ready sale, Mr. M j

Enterprise. making of horse collars
While t h e
by machinery is a new enterprise in
Harris county, the hand made article
has long been a source of revenue
to our more industrious b others in
black. The merchants of Hamilton
ship many thousands of bark horse
collars annually.
At the College.
Last Friday afternoon quite a
number of citizens of the communi¬
ty assembled at the college, upon the
invitation of Pres. Branham, to wit¬
ness an exhibition by his class in
calisthenics and a dress parade of the
cadets, and to hear a lecture by Mr.
B. to his class on elocution. The
dass in calisthenics acquitted them¬
selves creditably as did the cadets.
The lecture of Mr. Branham was
enjoyed, not vithstanding the many
interruptions made by visitors com¬
ing in, and the unfavorable c'rcum
stances under which it was delivered
—a large open hall, with a stiff south
wind in at two windows. He showed
a mastery of the subject, the impor¬
tance of which cannot be over esti¬
mated, and in his readings showed
excelh nt taste in selection and con
siderable talent in their rendition.
While the first floor is now corn
plete in every particular, leaving orrii
nothing desirable so far as the
nary routine of school exercises is
concerned, the hall must be compie
ted before the to.vn can reap its ft. 1
benefits from the institution. With
it finished the community cultivated might be
entertained, enl ghtened,
by many public entertainments. Now
the hall only suggests great jiossil.il
ices, and advertises our want of pub
lie spirit.

The Columbus Enpuirer presented
a ta ile of statistics Iasi week allowing
a very remarkable growth in the
manufacturing interests of that city
since the last census, indicating a
growth of too per cent, in three
years. The Atlanta Constitution
atlmils that no city of its si/e in the
South can make so good a showing,
but st ill claims and promises manufacturing to prove
Atlanta the largest
city in the state. We await its fig¬
ures with considerable interest.
•* ♦
Criticising the jioxition of the hard Au¬
gusta News that times must be
when bar keepers fail, the Macon
Telegraph claims that the whiskey
tr flic prt*pers most in communities
not financially prosperous.* We are
disposed to agree with the Telegraph
from our observation in this county.
While business at Chiplay, our sister
cay lias been good all winter and
her merchants ap|>car to be pros|>er
Otis, one of her liar keepers has failed
and another moved oil', at Hamilton
the bar rooms have increased in num¬
ber and strength, despite the hard
winter that has forced one oi our
largest business houses to the wall
and sees at its end more empty bus
iness places than at any time since
the railroad reached here four years
since. A community supjrorting
three bars royally—the best of thc.r
kiwi in the state—that is too Jioor to
finish its unfinished school building,
when it has a promise ot double or
quadruple the amount required, institu¬ as
an annual endowment to tiie
tion upon its completion. Times
may be hard when liar rooms fad,
but Hamilton complains of tightness
when her saloons apjiear to be pros
l*ring.

Chipley Note*.
Saturday evening the editor availed
hiraselt ot his first opportunity to
visit the new city of Chipley, at the
terrtrnus oi tiie C. & K. railroad.
It is less than a year old. and is
now. in white population as large as
Hamilton. When net handsome
young men a!l matry and settle down
she w 11 be larger,
Ninety-four bales of cotton were
shipped from there Saturday, and the
shipments of the season it is thought
will aggregate six thousand bales.
This tor a first season and a short
crop is remarkably good,
1 he cty government has only
]^en organ,/.e l a few months in,t
headed by such a gentleman as May
or Flournoy, it must needs be enter¬
prising. The streets are dean anil
well worked, and the best of order is
preserved by Marshal Oscar Hardy.
He doesn’t have to wear a red oak
club to do it, either.
The hotel is kept by our former
esteemed townsman, l)r. (J. T. Pur
sell, who gives full satisfaction to the
travelling public. He occupies the
h indsomc dwelling which he moved
from Hood.
The frame, of a large building finished de
signed for a hotel, has been
and it is nearing completion.
'I'lie cover is being put on the new
Methodist church, which occupies a
beaut fill lot and is a handsomely de¬
signed edifice, that will he an orna
ment and a credit to the enterprising
town. Rev. S. D. Clements is the
pastor ami holds servii cs twice a
month.
A steam saw nnd grist mill, owned
by Forbes Brothers, is located within
the corporate limits, and its musical
hum gives a business lone to the lit
tie city. modern yle
Many beautiful s res;
de ices dot the town here and there,
and a number of others are being
| ju ilt, all of wh : ch add to the beauty
Q f what is already a pretty town, Moses
Messrs Flournoy & Hunt.
& Co, Storey & Traylor, J. H. Ho
g a n. and R. Spivey all keep full
stocks and are doing a thriving busi
ne ss. One of these gentlemen tol l
U s that he hadn’t had time to eat his
dinner at home with his family, on
week days, since the ist of October,
And yet his house has a full corps of
competent salesmen,
One house recently disposed of
fjtyen thousand pounds ot meat in
three <j a ys. and doesn’t enjoy a rno
nopoly of the meat business either.'
Chipley has passed the stock law,
and the unoffending country wagon
now remain* unmolested by the oft
abused town cow, and her citizens
promise themselves immunity from
fleas next summer because of the
banished porker. about
There is not that cheapness
the business houses of Chipley that
was so noticeable at Hood, but al
are substantially built as if their own
ers had confidence in the stability of
the town.
Though everybody was too busy
to talk to us, we judge from nobody our cas¬
ual nb ervation, that now
doubts the wisdom of moving the
town from Hood. Hood could never
have been what Chipley now is.
Chipley is a town with a future.

To Consumers of Guano.
O
During the many years that the Pacific Guano Company has manufactured
and sold its well known brand of
Soluble Pacific Guano
various partes, being aware of the great popularity of this fertilizer, have,
from tune to time, put into market art cles bearing names as nearly like
that of onr brand as was safe for them to do. probably relying upon the
fact that sa d Soluble Pacific Guano was \ery commonly spoken of by
planters as “Pacific,” or “Guano," or “Soluble Pacific," or'“Pacific Guano.
These attempts have failed .o build up a permanent trade, probably be¬
cause of the fact that parties so appropriating our name relied upon that
name rather tiian the quality of their goods. We have, from time to time
called the attention of planters to there facts, either directly, or through
the late John S. Reese, Esq., of Baltimore. We are informed that one or
more new brands are now being put upon the market, containing the well
known and old name of “Pacific,” either as “Aminoniated Pacific,” “Geor¬
gia Pacific,” or similar forms, and we beg to call the attention of Planters
to the fact that every sack of the genuine Soluble Pacific Guano manufac¬
tured by the Pacific Guano Company has been, or is, branded with the
name of the former General Selling Agent, John S. Reese, or with that of
the present selling agents, Glidden & Curtis. None other is genuine, and
our friends and patrons will do well to examine carefully the packages found re
ceived by them this season. The real Soluble Pacific Guano will be
to be same standard quality as heretofore. No change has taken place in
it, notwithstanding recent changes in some General agencies.
