and Sunday ill Hamilton. |
Dr T ' R Mitchell returned home
Friday evening, last, having finished
t he dental course and received the
diploma of Vanderbilt University, at
Nashville.
An oriental poet thus sings in the
LaGrange Reporter of last week:
“One of our boys u-courting went
To Whitesville the Sunday before
The Thursday night following,
That Miller took his Rowe.” 1
Last Saturday was rather a gloomy
day, the wettest of the season.
The first quarterly conference of
the Hamilton circuit was held here
last Saturday and Sabbath, Rev. E.
H. McGehee, the presiding elder public be¬
ing present. There were no
services Saturday, because of the
rain, but on Sunday Mr. M. preached
to a full house morning and evening.
The males still constitute the ma¬
jority of Hamilton’s Sunday congre¬
gations—not a fact to boast of.
An improvement in the church

friends.
Twenty or thirty of our citizens
went to Columbus Thursday night of
last week and laughed themselves least
sore at the minstrel show. At
they were a little sore next morning,
and are unanimously of the opinion
that the minstrels shook them up a
little more than Hines Holt did.

Our receipts for to
the Journal for February were the
largest of any month in its history.
They ought to be larger still for the
present month—considering our very
liberal premium offers.
The Journal now reaches Shiloh,
Hannah, Waverly Hall and Elkrslie
on the day of publication and
we hope to soon have an appreciable
increase of our subscription lists at
these offices.
There is not a young man in the
-county who cannot obtain a good
aickel case watch, that is warranted
to keep good time, by a little work
in the interest of his county paper.
Read our offer elsewhere.
The last was above an average
crop year. After begging delinquent
subscribers to settle in corn, fodder,
peas or oats, we find at the close of
the winter fifty per cent of our list
unpaid. This having been the best
0 f three winters on collections, we
have long experience to back the
conclusion that we are a poor collect
or, or some of our patrons poor pay.
Taking either premise to be true, it
would prove us sadly deficient in
business sagacity not to endeavor to
find a remedy. As we know many
of those who owe us to be responsi
gentlemen, we rather lean to the be
lief that we are not a good enough
collector for a credit business. So
we have determined to ask that all
subscriptions be paid in advance,
Hereafter subscriptions will be dis
continued when the time for which
they are paid is up.
