The Persecution
The persecution dodge is be ne
played for all it is worth in behalf of
Senator Boynton. Can it be | erse
cution to tell of occurrences In the
hietorv of a man, which he defend",
os right and for which he thinks no
apology necessary. If Mr. Boynton
could congratulate Bullock upon his
inauguration, knowing that he was
coun e 1 in by fraud and forced upon
us by federal bayonets, he was not
a true democrat; if he was willing to
allow the carnival of wrong thus in¬
augurated to progress without making
him self obnoxious befouling politically Georgia's to the
dirty horde then
fair name, he was no patriot. It is
not persecuting him, but protecting in
the party, to show where lie stood
th: dark days of reconstruction. He
differed with his party then, when it
favored a decided stand and when to
many honest intelligent men such a
stand seemed absolutely necessary to
the preservation of our property, if
not our liberty and our lives, is the
party so hard pressed for men that it
cannot fmd a leader among those not
too ready to congrarulate the enemy
or dicker for a parole ?
If this be and persecution, friends let make Senator the
Boynton his
most of it.
Ifov. it Works.
The year following the emancipa
lion of our slaves, the sales of Web
Gter’s spelling book increased enor
niously, to sup;dy the demand of the
freedmen. That one of them has
read its stories to advantage, seems
tn be proven by a story that cornea
to us front Meriwether. The stock
law is now in operation in that coun
ty, and not long since a white man
took up two cows trespassing on his
farm and notified their owner, a c >1
orcil man, to come for them and pay
one dollar a piece for the damage
they had clone. The owner came,
and after a calm survey of the dam
age they had done, suggested that a
dollar a neighbor piece would not raised cover his it. His de
unwary then
mand to two dollars each. “Well,
boss,” sai<l tlie freednian, “eight of
your cows is over at my house and at
two dollars apiece that will leave you
owin' me $12.”
This is 1 enacted to us as an actual
occurrence.
