Local brevities.
Ghosts are said to infest the neigh¬
borhood below Catauia.
Mr. Irby Hudson is offering a bar¬
gain in land. See his r ird.
Tuesday was a regular March day.
f The calendar is a month ahead of
the weather.
More people attended court last
week than we have ever seen here
before.
Sunday night was stormy and a
northern blizzard chilled our bones
Monday.
Buy your goods from these who
help with their advertising to sup¬
port your county paper.
Gus Clements will represent Har¬
ris county in the penitentiary for five
years, John Wade four years, and
Win. Hood eight years.
The dull season is upon us. Mon¬
day we saw one man at work, wh.le
thirteen ablebodied citizens sat and
watched him. Did somebody ask
why the country is so poor ?
The nomination of Hon. Henry D.
McDaniel for Governor, meets with
general favor. He will make a good
Governor, and his nomination gives
satisfaction to ail wings of the party
Mr. G. C. Bass presented us last
week with a curious ear of corn that
had four smaller ears clustered around
it, all grown in the same shuck from
one stem. It grew on the plantation
of Mr. William Copeland, in Valley
Plains district.
The correspondence of the Jour¬
nal is highly creditable. If all who
.appear this week will write regularly
they will greatly aid us in making it
the paper it should be. Correspond¬
ents are wanted in every neighbor¬
hood where we have none.
John Cox, who killed his brother
in-law, William Thomas, two weeks
ago, was acquitted last Saturday. He
was ably defended by Capt. Wm. A.
Little, Capt. L. L. Stanford and Jas.
L. Willis, while the prosecution Grimes was
represented by Cai’s Mobley,

crowded out last week.—Ea]
How it rains! But everybody
knows an 1 feels it, tor it delays con
siderably the cotton planting season.
Many in this section at this date last
year were fully ready and some plant
' ing, but it seems that many days
plowing will be required before the
planting of this year begins. Corn
has all been planted except 1 -w pla¬
ces and bottoms.
On Sunday last, (8th) a Sabbath
School was organized at the new
school house recently erected in our
neighborhood. There were many
present, and nearly sixty names with en
roiled. This is a fair beginning,
good prospects for a large increase m
numbers. No better selection could
have been made than that of Mr. j.
