The Columbus Fi.e Co. No. i, of
Columbus, has accepted the invita
tion of the Hamilton Fire Co., and
promise to be with them on the oc
casion of their anniversary, the 31 st
instant. Our boys will endeavor to
repay the hospitality of the Colum -
bus company, so munificently be¬
stowed a year ago.
The leading idea of one of tne
speakers Friday evening was that
“George Washington certainly de
served more credit lor discovering
Atuerict. than Co'umbus did for de
fending it, . ^ncl another , seemed to 1
think that "if America hadn’t dis
covered Columous, there wouin have
been no Washington to defend. j
Hamilton Fire Company was out
for practice with their engine Mon- j
day evening. In their first test of
speed the boys ran 100 yards with j
the hose reel, attached the hose to j
eigine, and played water through ico
feet of hose in one minute. On the
second trial they accomplished the
feat in 37 seconds. As this is W.e.r j
first run against time, the record is ;
remarkable and t're boys are to be
congratulated.
The Hamilton Sunday schools re¬
solved last Sabbath upon holding
their annual picnic at Chipley, on
Saturday, June 2 nd. Mr. Gray has
fixed the fare at 20 cents for adults
and 1 j cents for children, for the
round trip, His lib raii y deserves

pu^uo.Debate.
O.ie . ot the most mteL:gent audi
enees ever assembled in Hamilton,
met in the College chapel last Friday
evening, upon the occasion of a
public debate by the college boys.
The ha:l iias just been ban Homely
finished, was beautifully lighted, and
not a Hamiltonian but felt a throb of
, hen ;st r ride as he seated himself and
beheld the grand improvement, n-o
college i;i Georgia can boast a liner
chapel,
The Deacon’s “Wonderful One
Horse Shav ” was recited in “quite a
'-°g'-cil way,” by Viiss Cornelia 1* loyd,
her execution meeting with hearty
applause.
An eloquent tribute to the “Stars
and Stripes,” was rendered hand
somely by Mr. J. H. Winchester.
Then came the debate. The sub¬
ject “Which deserves the more cred¬
it. Columbus for discovering Ameri
ca> or Washington for defending it.”
xhe subject is dry enough and tame,
but such was not the character of
the de rate. Mark Twain never had
an audience to laugh until they were
more hearli’y ashamed of the:n :Tves
for their hilarity, nor did Artemas
v\ard ever excite tne visibles ot an
assembly in a more didu’t-go-to-do-it
wa B than did our boys.
Col. Mobley, in announcing tb.e

saw fit to cons.dei t ie m«-.Lc. sen
ously, encouraging them by citing the
examples of Demosthenes and our
own Patrick Henry, and the obsta
cles their pe. severance overcame.
! The evening was altogether one of
profit and we shall not sec its like
again.
