R -ad Albert Kirven’s new adver
tieement.
Saturday was raw enough for
uary or j .'ecember.
Tne small grain sown since the
freeze is ooking well.
(larden'ng wdl begin in earnest in
a few days if th s weather continues.
Rev. S. Maxwell fi ied his regular
appointments iiere last Saturday and
S abbath.
Mrs. W. I. Hudson returned last
Monday evening from a visit to her
sister at Opelika.
As we go to press the air is sharp
and cutting, as it c nnes on the wings
of the north wind.
The inclement weather of Satur
day and Sunday is hard to remember
under this balmy southern breeze.
There have bean five tramp print
ers in Hamilton in five years. The
fifth one called to see us Saturday.
Those of us who thought the back *
bone of winter broken realized J our
mistake before the dose of last week.
There this morning, though { .
wu ice
it was comfortable without fires last
night until a late hour. Texas can
hardly beat th s.
Johnny Mobley’s explanation
the late ruddy sunsets, is a reflection
upon the abstemious habits of our
delegation to Savannah.
Two negroes were brought to jail
Monday night, charged with stealing
meat. The high price of that article
ought to palliate the crime if it does
not excuse it.
The Journal will give no seeds to
subscribers this year, but proposes to
give a dozen papers to any
who will send us a new
and a dollar.
We were glad to see upon our
streets this week our esteemed young
friend, Joe Hunt, who is the tourist
of an enterprising Atlanta'house. Joe
has many friends and any house
to be c uigratulated on securing
sen c js.
Hal Pitts has returned from a trip
to Birmingham, Ala. He was in#
pressed with the vi n and
of that growing metropolis, but thinks,
all things considered, Hamilton a
more desirable place of residence.
Since the publication of an extract
from the late speech of a gentleman
not a thousand miles from Hamilton,
the demand for farms by unmarried
limbs of fie law and other profes
sion tl gentlemen hereabouts, has in¬
crease!.
The riglit way to stop your sub
sciiption to a newspaper is lo write a
card to the publisher asking him to
cut off your name. Do not Stop it
by declining to take your paper out
of the office. This occasions loss to
the publisher and is a little discour¬
teous.
You will find bargains in clothing,
hats and furnishing goods at Joel T
Johnson’s, Columbus, where every
article is sold on the narrowest mar¬
gin, and guaranteed to be as repre¬
sented. Give him a trial.
Tragedy sit Mountain Hill.
Thursday evening while Samuel
Hargett and Jesse Calhoun were at
a Valentine party, at Mr. Wit Walk
ers, m the western part of the
ty, a difficulty arose between them,
when the former stabbed the latter
in the breast, from the effects of
which he died in a few minutes. Har¬
gett was arrested but made his es
cape. He is a son of Rev. Fancy
Hargett, Jr., and is about twenty
three years old.
Jesse Calhoun, the young man
who was slain, was a son of Mi. Mi .
chael Calhoun, and a half brother of
Mr. Aif Calhoun and Mrs. W. If.
West of our town and had just reach
ed his majority. He was a young
man of good moral character, of
pleasant address and sober industri
ous habits. Many friends and rela
, by his 1 •
lives sorely , bereavement
are
untimely fate.
An inquest was held Friday after
noon bv Coroner Smith, and the ver"
diet of the jury was that the young
man came to his death by a knife
wound in the hand of Samuel Har
gett and that it was murder. We
have been unable to procure a list ol
the jury or the evidence before the
cor jner which we hope to publish.
Saturday the remains rvt the young
man were carried to their last resting
place and laid away by lovmg hands.
Friends have offered a reward of $100
lor the arrest of his slayer and Gov
emor McDaniel has been asked to
increase this 1 y an amount sufficient

\o Scarlet Fever.
We are informe 1 upon the best
authority that there is no scarlet fe
ver here, nor has the little girl,
was said to have had it, had any
symptoms of the disease. She has
had only a cold and sore throat.
lironglit Down the House "
A cow belonging to one of our
townswomen kicked a prop from un
der her shelter Monday night and it
brought down the house. The cow
was very badly hurt, though the oth¬
er inmates escaped unharmed.
Valentine Party.
The folks had Valentine .
young a
party at the College chapel last
Thursday night and had a fine time.
The , . . largely .
occassion was very en
joyed by all who had the good for
ti»« t0 be P resent and nothing the
unpleasant 1 marred the pleas- 1
ures of the evening—not even the
weather.
Lost Pocket-book.
Last Saturday Mr. M. B. Kim¬
brough had the misfortune to lose
his pocketbook, on the road from
Hamilton to Valley Plains. It con
tained $310, in b.lls—2 fives, 4 tens,
and Ae balance in twenties. The
purse 1 was a. leather book, 1 with a
stra 17 i>. and was lost out of the coat
p OC ket. The loss is very severe up
0:1 Mr. Kin broi g!i and he offers
a very liberal reward for its recovery.
His friends will keep a sharp watch
and it will go hard with the finder if
he deviates from the path of recti
tude.
The Wanderers.
Monday evening Judge J. F. C.
Williams, Capt. C. L. Dendy, Col. j.
M. Mobley, Capt. Hal Moss and
Mr. Reuben Mobley returned from
Savannah, after having taken in the
Agricultural Convention, an exc.ui
sion to F'lorida, a trip to Tybee Is
land and other good things. n'|,_
party returned in good trim and fine
spirits, having .njoy.J on. of
most delightful free rides on record,
The trophies of their . .
many victorious
progress will long lie treasured as
mementoes of a joyous occasion.

There is a very general desire on
