THE HAMILTON JOURNAL.
J. L,. Dennis,.... ... .Proprietor.
HAMILTON, GEORGIA,
March 19, iSS<(
A terrible explos.on occurred in
the Pocahontas coal mines, Virginia,
Oil March 13. in which one hundred
and fifty men are reported as killed.
T. D. May, a formei Co'umbusite,
has been up before a.i Atlanta court,
on the charge of bigamy. If he is
proven gu.lty, he should he made toj I
suffer the extreme rigors of the law.
. * e.
The Mississippi small boy is made,
unhappy, but rendered harmless by
t: e recent passage of a bill by the !sg
Lture making it unlawful to sell the
u<y pistol within tne limit.; of the
State.
♦ » w--—
'1 he Mexican treaty has been rati¬
fied by the Senate and the country
doubtless will gain a larger trade with
Mexico. It is presumed that as no
party interests were at s.ake each
Senator in voting had in view on'y
the good of the country, and good
results will accrue from the passage
oi tiie biil.
If the people only realized how
much tax they paid the lederal gov
eminent they would compel a more
economical administration. It is
enough for them to pay as much as
they do, without contributing millions
annually to the support of our corm¬
orant infant industries. They con
cede enough in permitting a tariff
‘‘for revenue only.
I!y giving his closest attention to
the fit of his pants and the color of his
pastry, allowing the great ship of State
to move unmolested along, President
Arthur has harmorised his party and
stands prominently forward for re
election. This shows clearly that the
country only wants a figure head for
President, and father T’ilden is not
too feeble to assume this role.
.* . .i
Old man Tiklen is not loo old or
too weak minded to turn out dishon¬
est republicans and put moderately
honest democrats in office, and if the
party leaders are perfectly sure he
can be elected and he only of the
great army of democrats, we shall be
content. The country needs a good
honest democrat, young and vigorous
for President, but any sort is greatly
to be preferred to a republican.
The call for a meeting of the State
Democratic Executive Committee
opens the coming political canvass.
We do not see why one convention
cannot accomplish all the work se¬
lecting delegates to Chicago and
nominating a state ticket, and we do
not see any good reason for calling it
later than June. Long canvasses do
not promote harmony, and if the con¬
vention could be held next week the
gieatest harmony ever known would
pievail. If the people can only get
in their work before the politicians,
a’l will be well.
Mr. Morrison’s tariff bill, which
places a few staple products upon
the free list, and makes a general re¬
duction of twenty per cent, on the
duty now levied on imported articles,
“oorted on by
mittee, but

Committee.
The executive committee of the i
Democratic party will convene in At- j
lanta on Saturday, April 5th, at 10 1
o’clock, a. m., in the par’ors of the
Markham House Members of the
committe are earnestly requested to j
attend in person, as business of im- j
portaiu e will be transacted.
Democratic papers in the State of
G corgia will please copy. I
I IiiNP.V Jackson, Chairman :
The Mormon women are describ
ed by a gentleman who spent several
days Last summer in Salt Lake city,
as a homely careworn set with the
stamp of degradation on their faces,
Albany Ga., is in a state of excite
ment over the recent suicide of a
leading young business man of that
city, the son of Col. S. D. Irvin. He
was only twenty four years old, and
said to be strictly sober, honest and
upright, and loved by all who knew
him. The cause of the suicide is
unknown.
Douglass and Bruce condemn the
colored leaders of the north who call¬
ed the Pittsburg convention to dis¬
cuss the condition o*' the negro in
the South. They believe it will only
wor ]. discontent among the ignorant
masses without promoting their in
terest. In sending their letters to
call the convention, the northern
leaders utterly ignored the intelligent
colored leaders of the South.
The well known educator, Dr. A.
l>. Mazo, in his recent address before
the Lousiana Educational society,
strongly advocated industrial educa¬
tion for women. He believed that
the same brain power which enabled
southern women to shine in society,to
render efficient aid in church or school
affairs, and to manage large planta¬
tions would enable them to successful
ly push their way to the Iront rank of
such commercial and industrial occu¬
pations as were suited to them. The
tendency of sounthern young men to
abandon their home places and seek
remote fields leaves the young women
of the south to bear the brunt of ex¬
istence. Under such adverse condi
tions they need a practical, self suj>
porling, industrial education.—Atlan
