Conveation Notes.
Many colored folks were in town
Thursday who didn’t participate in
the proceed ngs of the convention.
They were such as Wise republicans
call kitchen politicians.
The mulatto was the ruling ele¬
ment of the convention.
Chairman Locke held the key to
the situation and turned it to the ad¬
vantage of his favorite, Arthur.
“The Beall King’s for Arthur,”
remarked the disgruntled caucus
members.
The delegation from LaGrange
came down in style in a coach-and
four.
The convention emphasised the
fact that Curtis Beall is the most
powerful republican in this district.
The master minds of the conven¬
tion were office holders minding the
master.
Curtis Beall admires Logan.
Items of Interest.
Points of interest—Blue'Spring and
Thomas’s Clothing Emporium.
The military have not been called
out, but the rush for Thomas’ new
spring clothing is almost riotous.
If the courts dealt out law as fairly
as Thomas deals out clothing, there
would be no occasion for such out¬
breaks as the Cincinnati riot.
Barnum values his white elephant
at $200,000, but a fine suit of clothes
can be bought of Thomas for much
less money.
With a new street railroad and
the clothing emporium of G E Thom¬
as, Columbus is bound to prosper
more abundantly than ever.
History of the Hamilton Cir¬
cuit.
On last Saturday the Quarterly
Conference for the above circuit, ap¬
pointed the following committe to
write up the history of their respect
ive churches: Hamilton, J M Mob¬
ley, Chairman; Bethel, Rev H Dor¬
man and Oscar Barnes; Mt. Zion,
Rev Wm. Foster; Prospect, S M
Brannon; Mathews’Chapel, J F Mar
shad.
Each committema i is requested to
have a full history of his church ftom
i's organisation to date, at the next
Quarterly meeting, which will be held
at PiOf pect pr ibably in July next,
and to turn the same over to the
chairman, Coi. Mobley for consolida
ton. Ail parties having info: mation
concerning tnese c-.urates win confe
a favor by tarnishing such facts to
the party whose duty it is to write up
said church.
Local and Personal.
Guano is still in good demand and
few farmers of our acquaintance re¬
fuse to use it liberally.
Miss Jessie Leitner, of Columbus,
gladdens our social world with her
presence this week, yisiting her sister
and Miss Lula Mobley.
Cotton planters are becoming very
numerous and agents for them are
about as thick as candidates will be
after awhile.
The spring session of Harris Supe
rior Court convenes here next Mon
day week. It is thought there is
business enough to consume two
Wc:,; k’’
Col. W Dugas Trammell, who re
moved recently from our town to
Fort Worth, Texas, is doing well and
taking a high stand in the growing
city of his adoption. We wish him
success.
The young folks of Hamilton spent
a pleasant afternoon in the woods on
Saturday las*. It was the first pic¬
nic of the season and all who partici
pated will anticipate with pleasure
another like occasion.
Our fire company propose to go
n to win at the approaching Colum¬
bus contest. A young man from
over the mountain when he visits
us usually returns on the "afternoon
train. Upon numerous occasions
he has been knowm to chat with his
fair charmer, half a mile from the
depot, until the train was opposite
and then beat it to the stopping
place, 'lire company has unani .
mously asked him to become the
(Chipley) leader of their squad of j
runners. ,
!
Mr. Howarl Lamar, of Auburn, j
Ala., a graduate of the A. & M. Col- j
lege of that place and a brother of!
Prof. T.J. Lamar, formerly of this
place, has accepted a position as
teacher in our college. He has
tau^ht for several rear sir.ee his grad
«atTon and is well fitted for the posi
tion he is to fill. A gentleman of
the highest type, with eminent schol
•rly attainments, oar people are to
be congratulated upon Uie addition
or his name to the faculty of an in- ;
nutation that is accomplishing so
much goo- tar our entire community
Court Notes.
The April term of Harris Superior
Court convenes here next Monday
week.
There are six prisoners in jail here
awaiting its sitting and one in the jail
at Columbus.
One of these prisoners is charged
with the offense of murder, two with
assault with intent to murder and
ff,ur with burglary.
There are besides these one hun¬
dred and two other cases upon the
criminal docket. Most ot the de
fondants in these cases have been ar
rested and are under bo id. Many
of them are cases of some gravity,
aud the offenses charged are from
petty larceny to seduction.
The civil docket is hardly of less
weight. Upon the appearance dock¬
et there are 41 cases, and on the is¬
sue docket there are 113 cases. These
run from petty disputes between
neighbors to suits for $10,000 dam¬
ages. Three suits for divorce are
among the number.
There are three criminal cases the
trial of which will consume, in the
opinion of the best judges not less
than a week. The trial of all the
criminal cases would require more
than two weeks.
The dockets are freer from old
cases than at any time in many years
The booas of the court show that
the county has a clerk inferior to
none ir. the state.
Church Notes.
Rev. Jos. Key preached to a very
large congregation at Bethel last Sun •
j day. Missions was the topic and a
collection after the sermon realized
upwards of fifty dollars.
Many of eur Hamiltonians atten¬
ded services at Bethel last Sunday.
Rev. Sam Jones, the celebrated
revivalist who is a nephew of our
Mr. Henty Jones, contemplates visi¬
ting Hamilton at an early day.
Hamilton is large enough to have
preaching every Sunday in the year
and fione too good to claim there is
no pressing necesity for it.
The old Baptist Church here can
be bought at a low figure. It can be
converted into a handsome and desi
ruble residence at small cost, Who
will invest?
The ladies having the work in
hand have secured good subscriptions
to the amount of $500 for building a
new Baptist church.
Last Saturday a committee com
posed of Messrs John F Jenkins,Y\ m
Jenkins and S J Truett visited Col¬
umbus and purchased a buggy lioise
for Rev. S W Bartley. Ti.e money
. was contributed for this purpose by
J u e jhany, Whitesville and Union
j churches, and is an evidence of high
es teem they entertain for their paster,
; t j s an example worthy of imitation
Dy all our chuiches.
Rev E J Burch preached near Co
lumbus last Sunday, One of the
churches of the Cafaula circuit is
only three miles from that city.
