Local and Personal.
The heavy wind last Wednesday
took the weather boarding off of the
east side of the jail. It has been re

P
The wind blew fiere with a rush
last Wednesday, but not hard enough
to break up one fishing party.
The town was never so dean shav
e l before.
Dr. Brooks is having some improve
ments put upon the Brooks House.
Our physicians say there is very
.
little sickness in the country.
Hamilton is the healthiest town on
the continent.
The growth of our town is sub¬
stantial and remarkable, Yet the
croaker is not silent.
The card of Albert Kirven should
be read carefully. He has a magnifi¬
cent stock of goods at astonishing
prices. - —----~
The carpenters -.re all busy and
the building boom continues with
unabled interest
Col. Porter Ingram, of Columbus,
thinks of spending the summer with
his fa mily in Hamilton.
Louis Smith, an enterprising Tal
bottonian, was in our city last week
taking fire risks for insurance compa¬
nies he represents.
Mr. A. P. Persons, one of the
cleverest tourists, was in our city last
week.
Mrs W I Hudson returned last
Friday from a pleasant visit to Flori¬
da, where she was the guest of Mrs.
E C Hood. There is perhaps no
pleasanter season for visiting our
tropical sister state, as the gardens
down there are now in their prime,
supplying the table with early vege
tables of all kinds, while fruits are
plentiful from last year’s crops.
A pleasant party of four gentlemen
and six ladies enjoyed a day at Blue
Spring Saturday. They went out
from Hamilton in buggies, enjoying
a pleasant ride, a good dinner, pleas¬
ant intercourse, a delightful shooting
match and returned enthusiastic ad¬
mirers of one of the great curiosities
and attractions of Harris county.
Get on the street cars when you
go to Columbus, and ride down to
Joel T Johnson’s opposite the Ran¬
kin House, where you will find the
best selected : t. ck of clothing, hats
and gents’ furnishing goods in the
city. He will be glad to see you
and will make prices right.
Dr. S. G. Riley is attending tbe
session of the Georgia Druggists at
Macon.
Don’t forget that we do printing
as well as anybody on our new press
and at as low juices.
The guineas are beginning to lay,if
the testimony of a Shiloh subscriber
is to be believed.
Wait for the arrival of M. Wolf¬
son ’s Spring Novelties, to be opened
in a few days.
Misses Mollie Johnson and Lula
Barnes visited Columbus last Satur¬
day.
M. Wolfson, agent for the New
Home Sewing Machine, offers such
inducements as to enable all classes
of people to purchase one. Call and
see him.
The Journal acknowledges a very
pleasant call from Mr. Ridgeway, the
South-west Troup correspondent of
the LaGrange Reporter.
A full and complete line of the
latest styles, Millinery, Flowers, etc.,
to be opened in a tew days at M.
Wolfson’s.
Miss Lula Mobley has been invi¬
ted to read a poem or essay at the
approaching entertainment of the la¬
dies Temperance Union. Miss Lula
is a lady of gifted elocutional attain¬
ments and while the honor conferred
is one of distinction, the ladies will
not be disappointed in their choice.
J T Johnson, Columbus, Ga., has
the nobbiest spring suits to be found
in Columbus, and his prices are not
to be duplicated.
L. D. Hutchinson, Esq., one of
the most prosperous farmers in Har¬
ris, the fodder in whose barn is from
one to sixteen years old, was in town
Monday. Mr Hutchinson has the
finest rye and barley patches in the
county, and his attention to these
probably accounts for the age of his
fodder.
A fine dress suit or a neat business
suit can be bought to the best ad
vantage of J T Johnson, Columbus
Georgia. He solicits a call before
you buy your spring clothing.
JOB POINTING.
Do you w’sh cards, letter heads,
heads, envelopes, rcuiars, , post
bill C
ers, blank no.es, mortgages, or any¬
thing of the sort? If SO, we have a
rewmb Lew JCIJ J-I press and can do work of
this kind saLifaftor.ly and at the low
est jitrees.
Street Car Reveries.
The street cars of Columbus are
not dearer to the hearts of Jhe citi¬
zens of Columbus than they are to
Columbus going citizens' of liUunil
ton. They save us two- miles of walk
ing or forty cents of motley every trip
we ™ ake /° the C:tV '
. h , ..
, » h ? do " , 1 con ^ ct ^
road, however as Burt 1 Cook, Wtllis
Fortson and Rev. Jesse Moore came
near finding out to their cost lues
day afternoon. The street car came
m sight ,ust as Harry Dixon pulled
h s b f U " e ’ but sce '^ that iht * e ~
fourths of the process,on were dead
heads he allowed the tram to be
waved down. Harry is the kindest
of conductors to D.-H’s.
The line runs through the prettiest
parts of Columbus and shows off the
city to a better advantage than any
that could have been selected. Many
very handsome residences beautfy the
prospect from every point, and the
beauful trees that adorn the broad,
handsome streets, give pleasurable
! emotions that must have been new
to our carping Atlanta companion
W-hof^ voice was bug!,cd.
Atlanta, we were told had cars
drawn by two horses and they passed
every fifteen minutes, and our com¬
panion knew as tew of the other pas¬
sengers did, that to pull the bell line
was the proper way to stop the car,
rather than to call to the drivei,
though the latter was still the most
effective, but the sight of the trees,
the beautiful new residences and the
towering factories stayed the carping
tongue. Silence reigned supreme.
Broad street, with its handsome
business houses, wearing their hand¬
somest spring trappings, presents a
beautiful panoramo as we glide down
it at head-swimming speed.
The scene is not lacking in anima¬
tion, either, for the novelty of the
cars has not worn off yet and business
transactions are stayed while custo¬
mers, clerks and proprietors all rush
to the front to see the thing go by.
Columbus is as proud ot her new
street railroad as a young mother of
the first tooth of her first born. And
we sympathize with her weakness.
It is something to be proud of.
Be Careful.
Men using fire arms cannot be too
careful with them. One day last week
two gentlemen of Hamilon were pass¬
ing the residence of the late John B.
Thomason, when they stopped to
shoot a bird in a tree near the road.
They were so intent upon killing the
game that no notice was taken of the
fact that tbe house, the bird and the
gunner were exactly in line. The
load of shot hit the door of the
house, not fifty yards from the sports¬
men, but luckily just too high to hurt
the children of Mr. Davis Long who
were standing just in front of it. It
was a narrow escape. Be careful
how you shoot.
Attention, Executive Commit¬
tee.
The Vice-Presidents and Members
of the Ex. Com. of the Harris Coun¬
ty Sunday School Association are
earnestly requested to meet at noon
Tuesday, the 14th. instant, to attend
to important business.
By order of the president
J. L. Dennis, Sec.
Entertainment at tbe College.
An entertainment is being arranged
for one night next week at the college
The admission, we understand, will
be free to ah, the object being to ad¬
vertise the institution. There will
be many visitors in town at the time
and as Hamilton is proud of her col
lege, she proposes to show it off.
Whitesville Notes.
Rev J S As kew left last Thursday
for Pike county. He is preaching in
Zebulon circuit. His moving is very
much regretted by his many friends,
and especially his brother Wallace,
who he left keeping the hall, and
says he wants a partner. So girls
look out.
Mr. J V/ Winchester has ,a flour¬
ishing school. He has thirty-five
students at Mountain Creek acade¬
my. We wish him much success.
Some of the farmers have deter¬
mined to have the stock law whe
or no. Mr Willie Swint has t
killing hogs very rapidly for the L
few days.
Mr. Robinson is a successful whe.
grower, and we hope witl succeed in
his undertakings.

Items of Interest.
Points of interest—Blue Spring and
Thomas’s Clothing Emporium.
The military have not been called
out, but the rush for Thomas’ new
spring clothing is almost riotous.
If the courts dealt out law as fairly
as Thomas deals out clothing, there
would be no occasion for such out¬
breaks as the Cincinnati riot.
Barnum values his white elephant
at $200,000, but a fine suit of clothes
c?.n be bought of Thomas for much
le-,s money.
With a new street railroad and
the clothing em porium of G E Thom¬
as, Columbus is bound to prosper
more abundantly than ever.
