TEE BLIND CANARY.
Bweet (tag* to my dreams,
My blind canary,
I dwell upon the liqnid not*
That fills thy little breaet and throat,
And comes forth piping, full and airy,
Beaching far and far away
To some dreamy twilight day,
Wboee virgin star with softness beams
On fairy dell and fairy.
Dost sing tha Joys of warmer climes,
My little stranger?
Those changeless green Canary Isles,
Where rrer long the summer smiles
On tamarind and forest ranger 1
On those green isles lapped by the sea
Perennial blooms thy parent tree,
Far from man’s sins, far from his orimes,
And far from danger.
The Yucca and the citron tree,
Tlion knoweet no more;
The gnavas sweet and mangosteen
Will never more by thee be seen:
Thy treble note no more will pour
O’er mango, palm, and asphodel.
And pomgranate and aureate hell,
No more, my bird, thy vision’s free
To see thy native shore.
When lo, the plume of awful death
In dusk descend*
Upon the couch where life i* run,
And cold oblivion'* night begun,
E’er yet the soul it* casement rend*,
The light* of heaven pa*s in review,
And waning hopes their pul*o renew;
Such scenes are thine, to which thy
breath
It* sweetness lends.

A PERFECT TREASURE.
BTORY OF A DETEOTTYH.
I am not the man to have bobbies,
bnt what I like is plate, whispered good service¬
able gold and silver. It is by
malignant persons that I would not give
«o nuuiy dinner-parties, if it were not to
exhibit these costly articles. I am not
conscious of such a motive for my hos
pitality, but if it exists it need not surely
lie objected to; it is I who have to jiay
for the weakness, and not my friends.
It was not looking at my gold and
silver plate, I suppose, which made my

would produce an indisposition of that

Last Wednesday we happened to have
rather a large dinner party; 1 had been
dining ont a good deal at various clubs
lately, and of course it was necessary to
invite my entertainers in return.
Tho dinner had gone off uncommonly had
well. The shield shaped snlvers

the lmtler.

I did not like even this arrangement; ,
