liOCAL AND P32KSONAL.
Hamilton will be well represented
at the Sunday-school convention.
Misses -Barnes, Mobley, Sparks
and Mrs. Kimbrough will go down to
Columbus Thursday to the Conven¬
tion.
A Columbus audience will be en¬
tertained on Friday evening next by
a temperance lecture from Mrs. Clu
pin, of South Carolina, and a recita¬
tion from Miss Lu : a Mobley, of
Hamilton.
A young lady informs us that on
Monday Col. Mobley shot a duck
threut-h the head that wa* swimming
on a pond at a distance of seventy
yards. We suppose that may Ire
termed as a “quack” shot.
The quilt donated to the Ladies'
Missionary Society pUoion by-. Miss Salte,
Lockwood, was exhibnicn
last week at the Brooks hotel, and
bought by ex governor Smith. He
was evidently influenced to make the
purchase by the desi+e to contribute
to the Missionary cause and assist
the ladies and they wish publicly to
acknowledge their gratitude to him
for the purchase. The Governor
may in future consider the ladies of
Hamilton his staunch friends.
The ladies’ festival last week net
ted over fifty dollars, which will be
added to the Baptist church fund.
They are determined to have a new
edifice, and so great is our faith in
the ladies, we are confident of their
success.
Next Sunday is Mr. Anthony’s reg¬
ular appoint at the Methodist church,
but he will give place to Mrs. Chapin
at ii o’clock. He will preach at
night.
Tobe Turner cheated the gallows
on Friday last by taking his own life.
An hour before the time for execu
t ion he asked as a last request to be
1 eft alone. Talking a silk handker
chief he placed it around his neck,
and iwis.e.l the ends until death €n
sued from strangulation. Thousands
had assembled at Greenville to wit
ness the execution.

Mrs Chapin, of South Carolinia,
who as a temperance lecturer has a
wi.le-spread reputation, will lecture
in the Methodist church of this place
next Sabbath at n o’clock. I twill be
a rare pleasure to listen to the sweet
thriding tones of a gifted woman’s
voice in a public address, and we
hope the church will be crowded to
its utmost capacity. Let every body
come and show their interest in tire
lady and the cause she so nobly rep
resents. She will lecture in Colum
bus on Friday night' and come up to
Hamilton on Saturday.
A party of young ladies and gen
tlemen from Hamilton atte nded the
quarterly meeting Sunday at New
Hope church. They went on Sat
uvday and were, entertained at the
hospitable home of Miss Molhe John*
son. They report a delightful time.
Mr. B. C. Kimbrough attended
the session of the Grand Lodge of
Knights of Honor, at Brunswick last
week as a representative uf Hamilton
lodge.
A picnic will be enjoyed by the
college students at Kingsboro on the
■second day of May and we are au
thorized to extend an invitation to
the public to participate. Donnelly
