HAMILTON, GEORGIA,
May 3, .1384
The Peoria, Ill., college hospital
was struck by lightning Monday
night and several inmate* hurt. The
matron it is thought will not recover,
There are six candidates announ
ced in the columns of the Savannah
News for the vacancy in the office of
Ordinary occasioned by the death of
Mr John O. Terrill.
Next week we will publish a list of
the paupers of the county, with the
amount paid each and a statement
of the expenditures of the county
since January 1883. The statement
will contain information of much in¬
terest.
Our Chipley department wilj be
Opened next week. It will be edited
by Mr W L Palmer, whose faeije pen
made the Leader so popular and his
space will not be circumscribed, but
full scope will be given for the ad
vancement of every interest of his
town and section.
Get on the street cars when you
go to Columbus, and ride down to
Joel T Johnson’s opposite the Ran¬
kin House, where you will find the
best selected stock of clothing, hats
and gents’ furnishing goods in the
city. He will be glad to see you
and will make prices right.
The Morrison tariff reform bill, to
reduce the tariff duties twenty per
cent horizontally, was defeated on
Tuesday last in the lower house of
congress. Those who supported it
have nothing to regret as it is hound
to force the tariff issue prominently
before the country and this insures a
correction of its evils.

Tuesday the failure was announced
of the Marine Bank of New York
and of the banking firm of Grant &
Ward, the latter firm being composed
of General U S Grant, James Fish,
president of the Marine Bank, U S
Grant, Jr., and Ferdinand Ward.
The latteT gentleman is off and the
vault of the company is locked. The
vice president of the bank claims
that the suspension is due to the fact
that it certified checks on Monday
to the amount of $750,000 for Grant
ft Ward, it being understood that
they would .deposit securities suffi¬
cient Tuesday morning to cover this
amount. This, they failed to do and
hence the suspension.

Tne Talhotton railroad has been
well managed financially from its in
cipicncy. It was built seven miles,
brood gttage, on a paid in capital of
$i0,ooo, with a bonded debt of only
$25,000, the road having been put
in running order for less than
$6,000 a mile, The earnings of
two years were devoted to its bet¬
terment, and at a meeting of the
directors last Monday they were
able to declare a dividend of 100
l>er cent, in earned stock, besides
a cash dividend of 7 per cent on
this increased valuation. President
Thornton and Superintendent Mar¬
tin have proven themselves eminent¬
ly qualified for their respective posi¬
tions, and ate entitled to great credit
for tl. ir successful management.
