Ellerslie Notes.
Cottton planting is progressing.
Notwithstanding the severity of
the past winter oa small grain, the
prospect now is very flattering for an
abundant yield.
There is a colored woman living
near Ellerslie, who is 35 years of age,
and has given birth to seventeen
children. Her name is Flora Jen
kins.
On Saturday last, as MrTT Jame¬
son was coming out of Columbus, he
discovered a small paper box lying
near the side-walk, securely tied.
Thinking at first that it was only a
“sell,” he hesitated to take it up, but
finally did so, and threw it carelessly
under the seat of his buggy, and
.thought no more of it until just be
fore he arrived at Home. He open
ed the box and to his utter astonish
ment he found the contents to be a
piece of white cloth, with a young
white baby in it. He carried it home,
had it clothed, &c., and the little one
is getting along finely. Mr. Jame¬
son is anxious to dispose of it, as his
wife had only a few days previous
presented him with a bouncing boy.
Last Saturday, Bethel church, Mus
cogee county, took action upon the
resignation of Rev C C Willis, he
having tendered his resignation at a
previous meeting. His resignation
was accepted, but upon the first bal¬
lot for a pastor he was a again chosen
as pastor of the church. It is hoped
he will continue to serve them.
According to madame rumor a
brilliant matrimonial engagement be¬
tween one of the most charming
young ladies of Ellerslie district, and
one of Talbotton’s most business
young men, will be consummated
at an early date. Don’t all guess at
once.
Col Willis Fortson, of Muscogee
county, is having a good deal of bus¬
iness around this way here of late.
We suppose it is of a religious char¬
acter as he generally comes around
on “Sunday and Saturday before.”

he viewed the bulletin board.
Fire Locals.
Our rabbit is sick.
Our boys hope for better luck next
time.
The soberesc crowd that left Co¬
lumbus Wednesday Night was com¬
posed of Hamilton No. 1 and its
friends.
Mat O’Brien is a genius. With
half a dozen strokes of his magic
brush he pictured on the Hamilton
No. 1 bulletin board the kind of rab
bit our boys could rundown. It was
sick. So are the boys and all of us.
Columbus hospitality is unbounded.
Our boys were too handsomely :
treated by Columbus No. 1, to re¬
member the occasion with any thing
of regret, although they were so bad¬
ly defeated. They are pledged to
show themselves by their next public
contest as more deserving the fellow¬
ship of such worthy firemen.
The Firemen’s Tourament at Cc
lumbus, of May 7 th, 1884. will long
be remembered by Hamilton No. 1.

A Mixed Family.
Leven Crews, a well to do colored
man, after taking unto himself four
wives—three enduring slavery times
and one after—was gathered to his
fathers. His wife, or rather his last
wife, claimed the privilege of naming
his administrator, which privilege
was contested by three sons of wives
one and two. They claimed that
Laura, wife No. 4 , was not legally
married to him, and was not entitled
to any of his estate, because she was
the grand-daughter of a former wife,
known in the schedule as wife No. 3.
„„ 1 he matter came up before . c our , ast .
Superior Court tor adjudication. It
appeared that he lived with wife No.

curing a divorce he took unto him
se ' 4 wl ^ e No. 2 » by whom he had
other children, two of whom claim a
share of his property, These two
wives being still alive he took unto
himself still another, denominated in
the bill as No. 3, with whom he was
living at the close of the war. After
the death of No. 3, Leven and Lau¬
ra were married, Laura being her
grand daughter. It appearing to the
jury, under the charge of Judge Wil
lis, that two or more of Leven’s wives
were living on the 4th of March 1866
and that he was not afterwards mar¬
ried to No. 3, Laura’s grand-mother,
Iris subsequent marriage to Laura was
not illegal. Laura and her child
were therefbre declared his heirs, to¬
gether with all his children born in
slavery to wives 1, 2 and 3. The
general opinion is that Leven was a
muchly married man.
