Harris Coimtv Democracy,

Committee, the democratic party of
Harris county assembled at the court
house Tuesday morning.
Dr. T. F. Brewster, chairman of
the Executive Committee stated the
object of the meeting and tendered
the resignation of his committee,their
li,ne of service having expired.
Upon motion, Maj. Flynn Hargett
was elected chairman of the meeting
and J. L. De.'.ms, secretary.
The resignation of t..e Ex. Coin,
was accepted and upon motion the
chair appointed a coimnittee of one
f ont each malitia district to offer
names lor a new F.x. Com. and to
nominate four delegates to Atlanta
to select delegates to the national
democratic convention at Chicago.
The committee retired and upon
consultation offered the following re.

adopted and the convention adjourn
ed.

selected for the next legislature.

The republican national conven¬
tion met in Chicago 1 uesdav. 1 lie
prominent candidates are Blaine,
Arthur, Edmunds, Logan and Gen.
Sherman. The convention was or
ganized by electing John R. Lynch,
a negro, temporary chairman. His
opponent, Powell Clayton, was put
in nomination by the republican na
timial committee, and his defeat is
attributed to the tact mat wuuc ne
was elected as an Aithur delegate, he
acted with the Blaine supjwrters.
Governor Smith was fired at three
times Friday evening, while passing
up Randolph street, when opposite
the Times office, by Evans Wright,
who was drunk. 1 wo balls passed
through the tail of the Governor’s
coat. He did not know hi was be
ing sho* at, as the shots came from
his icar. The grand jury will inves¬
