Exliibition of'the Primary De¬
partment.
'The commencement exercises
opened with an excellent entertain
ment Friday night. It gives the
promise of a successful week.
The opening feature, a piano solo
by Miss Lizzie Zuber was rendered
in faultless style.
The bevy of young ladies who fol¬
lowed did admirably.
Robert Middlebrooks spoke •

chief makers in a way that bodes
them no good should they ever cross
his path.
James Cowsert related the Toper’s
Mistake in a manner that brought
down the house.
Miss Fannie Sparks gave Little Jack
Horner another boost toward the
niche of fame in a very pretty recita
tion.
T. N. Sparks, Jr., paid a glowing
tribute in fitting terms and earnest
tones to our workmen.
Napoleon Norris gave some most
excellent advice in a creditable style
under the subject of "Make your
Mark.”
Miss Carrie May Cowsert rendered
The Drunkard’s Dream in touching
style.
A new version of the old oaken
bucket was given creditably by Rob
ert Cowsert
M. J* Clark contributed with his
might to the fame of Rome and Car
thage.
Miss Keturah Floyd recited quite
beautifully the humorous story of the
Pilgrim and the Peas.
“The Good Boy—The Bad Boy”
was the theme of Robert Clark and
JU3E 23, 1884.
he treated both sides as if from an
intimate personal connection.
The Creed of the Bells was a most
difficult recitation, given in a style
that would have been creditable to a
far older lady than Miss Mattie Wil
! liams.
Andre’s request to Washington
was the theme of S. K. Blackmon
and he acquitted himself quite hand
somely.

the subject Look Aloft,
“One Pair of Stockings to mend
to Night” was a pathetic recitation,
i i in fine style, given ^ by Miss Mary Lou

“A Touching Courtship” was ap
plauded heartily as rendered by Pope
Threlkeld.
j Lorenzo Calhoun gave “Betty and
the Bear” from an interesting stand
point, in a manner that entitles him
to some of the laurels for success of
the evening,
| Miss Cordelia Brooks recited “A
child’s Wish’ most creditably for one
j of her age.
One of the finest orations of the
j evening was Socrates Snooks as in
terpreted by Willie Sparks,
Willie Williams spoke in glowing
terms of the Champion of his class.
1 he piano duett by Misses Floyd
and Johnston was rendered admira
bly.
The Calisthenic Drill showed some
new features and was a most inter¬
esting feature. Misses Johnson and
Leitner presided, at the piano and
furnished excellent music.
Commencement Sermon.
The seating capacity of the large
j college chapel was taxed to its utmos
by the crowd which assembled Sun¬
day morning. The sermon by the
Rev. Emmett W. Solomon of Au
burn. Ala., was a masterpiece, well

worthy of the occasion. It was upon
the text, “Worship the Lord in the
beaut y of holiness;” and we regret
that we have not time and the oppor
tunity to give a full synopsis.
