Man Needs the Sabbath.
“ The -Sabbath was made (or man—not man
for the Sabbath:'" sai l the Divine Redeemer.
Man needs it! lie nee Is it to recuperate
the waste which six days labor has brought
to his physical system. lie nee Is it to rest,
his mind, which the worrv and care of busi
ness lias more or less depressed. lie noe Is
its sacred time to meditate on his relations to
G<><l. his lei low-men. and eternity ; and to en
able* him to join his fellows in acts of devo
tion to his Creator and Preserver. He needs
it.that lie may have time to cultivate that
self-respect, and social eu learments which the
busy toil of six days forbids.
I’ho church also needs it, that she may ob
serve the ordinances committed to her by
her Divine Ileal, and to afford her opportu
nity to leach those truths which are essen
tial to her existence, and the welfare of men.
both in time and eternity. The State also
needs it that her citizens may learn their du
ties to one another, their obligation to socie
ty and their duty lor conscience's sake, to
obey the laws of the land. And it may be
that even the iron on our railroads and in our
work-shops need it. to regain the solidity and
strength which constant use tends to destroy.
The voice of nature may, therefore, well
mingle with the voices of men, and both in
unison with our Divine Creator proclaim,
*' Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy !*’
Yes. we need its hallowing influences to pre
pare us for the labors and duties of time and
for the enjoyment of eternity. And that we
mav incite you to use your influence to main
tain it in our own community, to our own
country and I lie world, we ask you to modi,
late on some of the results which would in
evitably follow its abrogation as adav oldest,
ns a sacred day and a non-lega! day in our
land.
1. Ignorance, crime and barbaiism would
be promoted by its abrogation.
2. Demoralization as respects morals would
ensue. •
3. Political demoralization would result
from it.
4. Civil and religious liberty would be de
stroyed.
o. Infidelity an l Communism would be pro
moted.
G. Jhe wages of the laborer would be
lessened.
7. Disease would be increased.
8. 1 lie judgments of (Jod would be brought
down upon the nation.— Church Union.
Chewing Tobacco in Church.
NVe are not going to discuss the question
of the use of tobacco—whether it is right or
not; but simply to urge 3011 to abstain from
its use in (lie house of God. No gentleman
will spit on the lloor of one whom lie is visit
ing. Shall we show more respect to the home
of a frien 1 than to the house of God ? How
ever humble the building, if it is devoted to the
worship of (J-od, it is a saere 1, holy place,
and no one ought to treat it w’th contempt,
lie who fails to show proper respect to the
house, treats 11 iin to whom the louse belongs
with disrepeet. You do not mean that. You
have not thought of that. Well, don't do it,
any more. 4on can do without your tobacco
a little while. Show your reverence for the
bouse of God and your respect for t hose who
meet to worship Him !>y refraining from the
filthy habit in church. Remember it, is a
place where people wear their host clothes,
and where they come to “ worship and how
down—to huufl before t,lu* Lord our Maker."
Don t make it filthy with tobacco spit, and
prevent the homage due to the great Creator.
T 011 will agree with us that its use in church
is a bad practice. It will cost you an effort,
but you can succeed; for God himself will
help you. And don't forget that every sac
rifice you make for religion—everything you
give up for the salve of .Jesus, will bring a
blessing to your heart sweeter far than the
enjoyment you have.— Bupfisi Bonner.
4\ hilc there is a general anxiety in Cali
fornia to get rid of the Chinese, there is an
equally strong anxiety on the part of the
Peruvians to introduce free Chinese labor
into their republic. In this scheme the Peru
vians meet with opposition from the British
authorities iu llong Kong, notwithstanding
the existence ol a treaty between Peru and
( hina expressly stipulating that free emigra
tion from the latter country to the former is
to be permitted. The Peruvians claim that
all traces of cruelty to Chinamen hare disap
peared in Peru, but this is not confirmed by
the testimony u! reliable persons who have
recently traveled iu that country. In pre
venting the deportation of Chinese, the British
officials at Hong Kong are probably actuated
by motives of humanity.-—.V. Y. Sun.
