LULA IS DEADI
Our little Lula is dead,
Karth lias pillowed her weary head ;
Gladly she laid life's burden down.
Without a sigh, without a frown ;
Her soul we hope has gone to heaven.
Where she has a bright crown woven.
And to my mother of this sweet child,
Although with grief I know you're wild,
Raise your thoughts, your eves, on High,
Let from your lips escape no sigh;
Think of Lula as dwelling far above.
The child of bliss, the child of love.
] know my mother's loving heart
Grieved with her darling child to part;
But this world cannot always last.
Life's weary journey will soon be past;
And when dying, those gone before
Can cause you grief never more.
And to her fond, gentle sister.
Well we know you sadly miss her;
Thine was a kind, fond sister's love.
Acknowledged on earth, recorded above;
She whs only here a short while to stay,
And a loving God has taken her away.
Ah! Lula, if thou dwellest with God,
And thy feet sweet flowers have trod.
Pray for thy dear grief stricken mother.
Thy dear sad sisters, thy young brother;
And for thy father far away.
One prayer I beg of thee to say.
Sis Mattie.

The Bottom of the Sea.
WHAT HAS BEEN* DISCOVERED AND SETTLED
BY THE ** CHALLENGER" EXPEDITION.
Hero is an end of all romance about hid*
den ocean depths. We can speculate no lon
ger about perils, in chambers of pearl, or mer
maids. or heape 1 treasures and dead men's
bones whitening in coral caves. The whole
ocean floor is now mappe 1 out for us. The
report of the expo lition sent out from Lon
don in her majesty's ship, Challenger, has re
cently been published. Nearly four years
were given to the examination of the currents
and floors of the four great, oceans of the
world. The Atlantic, we arc told, if drained
would lie a vast, plain, with a mountain ridge
in the mid lie running parallel with our coast.
Another range crosses it from New Found
land to Ireland, on top of which lies a sub
marine cable. The ocean is thus divided into
three great basins, no longer “unfathomable
depths." The tops of these sea mountains
are two miles below a sailing ship, and the
basins, according to Reeius, are fifteen miles,
which is deep enough for drowning, if not for
mystery. The mountains are whitened for
thousands of miles h}* a tiny, creamy shell.
'The depths arc re 1 in color, heaped with vol
canic masses. Through the black motionless
water of these abysses move gigantic abnor
mal creatures which never rise to upper cur
rents. There is an old legend coming down
to us from the first ages of the world, on which
these scientific deep-sea soundings throw a
curious light,. Plato and Solon record the
tradition, ancient in their days, of a country
in the western seas, where flourished the first
civilization of mankind, which, by volcanic
action, was submerged ami lost. The same
story is told by the Central Americans, who
still celebrate, in the fast of Izoalli. the fright
fully cataclysm which destroyed this land
with its stately cities. Do liourbourg and
other archaeologists assert that this lost land
extended from Mexico beyon 1 the West In
dies. 'The shape of the plateau discovered
by the Challenger corresponds with this the
ory. What if some keen Yankee should yet
dredge out from its unfatlnme 1 slime the lost
Atlantist ?—New York Ornithic.

Tim MOST EXTRAORDINARY MARRIAGE CERE
MONY OX RECORD.
“ hat God has joined together let no man
put asunder.” This, as it started over the tel
egraph wires this morning from this place to
reach its destination two hours late, at George
town, Col., 3,000 miles away, ended the most
novel marriage on record, joinining till death
shall part. Mr. Wheeler C. Ellis, at George
town, to Miss Lina Sailers at this town. The
history of this stran_e proceeding, as related
to your correspondent by a friend of the par
ties, is as follows:
“Three years ago, Wheeler Ellis, a young,
poor and hard working mechanic, left Wash
ington for the far West to seek his fortune,
leaving behind a lovely and lonely maiden to
await his coming at some future time, when
bis finances would permit of marriage. This
time had come this week, but on account of
business engagements the young man found
lie could not make the trip East. A friend
arriving here yesterday from the West was
commissioned to take the young woman to
Georgetown, where the ceremony would be
performed. This arrangement, though en
tirely in accordance with the young lady's
wishes, did not suit her mother, whosostren
uously objected to this way of the thing be
ing done that some other plan must be adopt
ed or the affair postponed. The girl had
waited long already, and nothing but dis
tance seemed to stand in the way. At the
suggestion of Rev. George Carpenter, the tel
egraph was called into service. This calmed
the old lady’s objections, and the preacher
performed the ceremony. No cards. The
only spectators were a friend or two. From
the time of the first message till the young
man answered the solemn “ I do,” was some,
thing over four hours. The bride started to
day for a home and husband in the far West,
with the best wishes of many friends. The
parties are well known here, and the affair
c.aused quite a ripple of excitement when it
became known. It is unequaled in strange
ness in tlue-aunais of marriages.— Washing
