Hints to farmers.
Increased crops and diminished expenses
are the remedies lor hard times. During the
niout s between now and planting, consider
carefully how this remedy may he applied.
Begin this autumn by carefully selecting from
your crops the seed for next year’s use; for.
as we have repeatedly shown, good seed is at
the foundation of large crops. Consider care
fully whether to plough in the fall or spring,
bringing all your past experience to hear on
your decision. Stop all the waste that you
find, and even seek carefully for the wastes
to be stopped. Review your past failures
and successes, and search out the causes
which operated, and decide how to obviate
the one, and gain the other, the coming sea
son. Carefully reflect on j'our methods of
feeding in the winter months, and ask your
self whether a change of system may not he
profitable. A dollar saved here is a dollar
earned ; and frequently the sa'c of one kind
of produce, and the purchase of another,
brings profit. When bay brings a g od price
and straw is cheap, cannot the straw he fed
profitably through the use of roots and cotton
seed meal, and a balance in money be se
cured ? Have you facilties for rearing spring
lambs for next June or July market ? More
important still, consider how much land yon
have which is not producing, and yet which
can he made productive. If you have such
land, it is certainly folly to leave this capital
idle. Is it a question of manure ? Then
carefully scheme how manure may he best
provided, and whether you can purchase arti
ficial fertilizers, and use them advantageous
ly. Now, before the hurry timo, is your op
portuuity for studying into these things, and
deciding what fertilizer is the most promis
ing for you. Have you all the tools necessa
ry for your spring work ? If not, now is the
time to examine into the merits of various
inventions, and to calculate which you can
best alb rd to buy, if at all. Usually a tool
can he purchased more advantageously in
winter than in summer. Often there are too
many tools on the farm, but some of which
are not adapted to- your use. Often again,
you do not possess enough, nor of the right
kind, in the winter time reflect on these
subjects, and have a decision ready when
planting time again- comes about. Carefully
look over your year's expenses,- and think
whether t here has not been waste here which
may be rectified. Calculate on how much
labor you will require for your next year’s
plans under your past system, and, with cau
tion, consider how your system may be im
proved so that the same or more work can be
accomplished with less labor or less nionej’.
He not too ready to adopt the new, but be
ever ready to reject the old when your expe
rience ind cates that a gain may be expected
to follow. Here, as elsewhere, use a wise cau
tion, which is not conservatism, but common
sense.
Finally, do not depend on your paper for
All your ideas, but seek your own hints. If
you do this honestly, you will keep memo
randa of your daily experience, and will
quickly recognize the importance. The far
mer who applies business principles to his
work—and this day-book matter is business—
cannot fail to be prosperous and progressive.

Shut Your Mouth.
We have all been greatly distressed at the
appalling ravages of yellow fever on the Mis
sissippi. May you abide safely under the
Almighty’s wing. Many years ago a little
book, with the curious title of “ Shut your
mouth,” was published by Mr. Catlin, whose
portraits ot Indian Chiefs used to adorn the
Smithsonian Institute, at Washington. Mr.
Catlin, a portrait painter, was brought very
low ly bleeding at the lungs, and as a last
resort he went far West of the Mississippi and
lived among the wild Indians. Ho noticed
their freedom from pulmonary and malarial
diseases, lie noticed also that they breathed
invariably through their nostrils, and, indeed,
rarely opened their mouths. He learned that
this was taught them from their earliest in
fancy, the mother watching her sleeping babe,
and compressing its lips as often as they are
opened.
After a long, arduous struggle he managed
to do this himself. llis lung troubles at once
began to disappear, and he dwelt amid ma
larious marshes, both in North and South
America, with impunity. On his voyage
homo from the latter he pointed out to a fel
low passenger those who habitually breathed
through the mouth. The yellow fever broke
out, on the vessel, and all those who did this,
died.
Now. we don't know how much importance
to attach to this, but as Mr. Gatlin evidently
fancied lie had found a panacea for many of
our bodily ills, and took the trouble to write
a book in which he urgently entreats the
adoption of the custom, we think it worth
mentioning at this time. “ Shut your mouth,”
therefore. It will do you no harm, it may do
you good, and will very likely do your neigh
bor good.
A Beautiful Indian Custom.—A few
weeks since a camp meeting was held in the
Greek Nation lasting several days. The
meeting was attended by many Choctaws
from our sister nation over the line, and had
been one of great solemnity and serious in
terest. At its close and before parting they
all placed themselves in two lines facing each
other, and the Choctaws in their own lan
guage sang some of their sweetest hymns.
Then each passed down the opposite line and
earnestly shook the hands of the Creeks.—
1 hen the Creeks repeated the graceful cere
mony, singing in their beautiful Muskoke
language, shaking the hands of the Choctaw
worshippers, wished them God speed, and
shen filed off to their respective nations and
homes,. This was an exemplification of the
'* peace on* earth ami good will"’ policy.
