ROB'T S. HOWARD, Editor.
JEFFERSON, C3cjPk.
PRSOAV noimci,
—'Tiro Gwinnett Heruhl states that the
Lawrenceville railroad is now ar> assured
fact.
—Jt is proposed to erect a monument, to
John C. Calhoun. on the line of the Air-Line
Railroad, near his old residence.
—From the best information we can get of
the New York election, Robinson is defeated,
but all the rest of the State officers elected
are Democrats.
—President making appears to be the
order of the day, and soon Congress will
commence its work upon the same line. Too
much politics for us.
—lt is asserted that the defeat of Ewing,
in Ohio, who was an ardent Greenbaeker,
will put the greenback issue upon the shelf
in all future contests.
—We attribute nothing wrong to the Sen
ators who voted not guilty in the Renfroe
matter. We accord to them the right to do
as their conscience dictated. Still, the way
the affair has turned out does not exactly
suit us, and we find lots of the same opinion.
—lt is now in order for the seventeen
Senators to explain to their constituents why
they voted against Ren (roe's impeachment.
The ball has been set in motion by some of
the constituents of Senator J. B. Cumming,
requesting him to address them upon the
subject. It is said that his reasons were
entirely satisfactory.
—The Chronicle <§• Constitutionalist , of
Augusta, says that it is reported in Atlanta
that Judge Lochrane proposes, as a plan to
heal the difference between the North and
South, the nomination of Grant bj r both
parties next year. This may suit some, but
we prefer the bloody chasm without any
bridge. Blaine or Sherman to Grant for the
next President, for the election of Grant
means death to State sovereignty and a
Republican form of government. No Grant
for us, thank you.
—lion. Zachariah Chandler, the most stal
wart of the Radicals, made a speech against
the South one night last week in Chicago,
and was found dead in his bed the next morn
ing. The following, taken from the St. Louis
Post-Dispatch , will give a pretty good idea of
who he was:
For twenty years a senator of the United
States, and a member of that body when Jeff
Davis sat in it; the extremest of the extreme
leaders of the republicans, and the most out
spoken champion of hie eternal punishment
of rebels; the man who raised himself from
a .'ky goods clerk to the senate chamber and
the wealth of a millionaire; the man who, as
chairman of the republican national committee
and secretary of the interior, did more to steal
the presidency in 1876 than any other man
except John Sherman ; the strongest cham
pion ot Grant's third terra and centralization,
and' probably the best abused republican
tender in* the country—Zaeh Chandler was
undoubtedly a mart of great force and much
more natural ability than he was generally
credited with.
As he lived he died—unusually. Last
night he spoke to an immense audience at
Chicago. This morning lie was found dead
in his bed.
His deat h is a loss to the republican part}”,
but a gain to the country and to the great
eause of peaee.
Work on the extension of the Cuhnr.hiiH
and Koine Railroad is said to be progressing
rapidly.-
A negro was killed in a row last week in
Elberton, and a colored wench gashed up with
a broken- bottle.
Trains on the Hartwell Railroad from its
present terminus to Howersvilie now run
daily, and carry passengers and freight both

The 45th annual session of the board of
physicians of the State of Georgia will be

Last Saturday afternoon, Ed. Worsham, a
young man of Atlanta, com mil ted suicide by
taking forty grains of morphine. lie died
during the night.
Avery malignant type of fever is said to
be prevailing throughout Sugar Valley.
Gordon county, and a number of persons have

Two negro men got to fighting over a bottle
of whisky, in Talbot county, when one of the
negroes stabbed the other, the knife entering
his heart and killing him instantly.
Dr. J. S. Lawton, of Atlanta, one of the
Trustees of the Monroe Female College, while
on the train going to Forsyth, Saturday, was
robbed of his pocket book by one of the light
fingered gentry.
Major M. W. Finger, of Gainesville, who
recently inspected the Clement attachment,
proposes to get up a company ami start one
in Gainesville. This is the way to bring
prosperity.
Some of the leading citizens of New York,
including Whitelaw Reid and General Roger
A. Pry or r have written to the authorities and
citizens of Athens thanking them for their
kindness to the lute Ilenri L. Stuart.
Tlie train on the Louisville branch road
jumped the track recently and several pas
sengers jumped or fell twenty feet from tiie
cars. The cars were going siow at the time
and became detached from the engine.
The Thomson Journal reports that there
is more sickness in McDuffie county now
that has been known tlicre for some time.
It is attributed to the unseasonable weather
which prevailed during the early part of this
month.
The dwelling of Mr. J. If. Martin, at Tal

Wednesday morning last . It, was insured for
fifteen thousand dollars in the Continental

twenty-six, became involved in a difficulty

More than one-fifth of the voters of Rock
dale county have signed a petition asking,
the Ordinary to call an election submitting
the liquor traffic, question to the people. The
Conyers Weekly learns that Judge Seamans
will next week announce the time of said
election.
Elberton Gazette : “ \Ye are greatly pleased
to learn that Judge S. D. Blackwell has dis
covered, on his plantation below Elberton,
a most promising vein of gold. This is
evidently an offshoot from the main vein,
and which he is now at work tracing to its
source.”
The Gainesville Southron says it is not
generally known, but nevertheless it is true,
that the mining stocks of Dahloncga are
selling at better prices than any in Colorado
or California, and with the exception of two
bonanzas on the west side of the Rocky Moun
tains, the Findley mine Stock at Dahlonega
is ahead of any stock quoted.
On F i ’.day night last the office of the flouring
mill ot Mr. 11. Lewis, on Thompson* street,
Atlanta, near the Macon depot, was entered
by burglars, who blew the safe open with
powder and stole therefrom one hundred and
ten dollars and a thousand mile ticket. It
was fortunate that there was not more money
in the safe, as Mr. Lewis would have been a
much heavier loser.
The Toccoa Xews says that the late freshet
has been the most destructive one to farmers
ever before known. The Tugalo river lias
been very high, completely overflowing the
bottom lands and washing away bridges,
fences, corn, fodder, cotton, etc. Away from
the rivers the damage has not been so great.
It hopes, however, that the loss sustained by
the farmers is not so great as they now fear.
The Oylethorpe Echo sa}’s the grand jury
of that county found some naughty returns
on tiie tax digest. One man gave in a
I dwelling and two business houses at only
i $lO, while a planter returns a place that he
j lias refused $.2,000 for repeatedly at S4OO.
I here are a number of oilier equally as bad
! cases, which have been put upon the books in
the clerk's office for the commissioners to in
i vestigate.
The case of the Southern Express Company
against Walter S. Lynch for the recovery of
twenty-tive thousand dollars entrusted to him
about a year ago, and unaecouted fur by him,
is on trial in Augusta. The prisoner put in
a counter-claim for one hundred thousand
dollars against the company for “ malicious
and unreasonable imprisonment,” but the
claim was not allowed by tlie Judge as a proper
defense to the action.
According to the Buena Vista Ary ns a
colored couple. Abbertus Black and Caroline
Leonard, of Schley county, were married a
tew nights ago. The next morning being
Sunday, the bridegroom announced that they
would attend a camp meeting that day, but
the bride dissented and declared that she
would attend no Methodist meeting while
Baptist service was so near. The groom
swore he would not have any woman who
wouldu tdoas he said. So e.aeh went their
wa\’, and .have not yet returned to each other.
Almost Young Again.
“ My mother was affiictc l a long time with
Neuralgia and adull, heavy, inactive condition
of the whole system ; headache, nervous pros

months ago she began to use I lop Bitters,
