A colored guard at the Old Town planta
tion. in Jefferson county, shot and killed a
white convict named K. A. Cowart, who was

under a life Sentence, and was from Ware
county. An inquest w;s held by Justice
Hazel 1. and . lie jury returned a verdict of
jusui'able homicide.
Tim Chronicle reports the escape
of llenr3' lhj’.vell, a negro convict, from the
chain-gang in that citv tinoqgh a sewer. He
was seat into the main sewer on Centre street
through an opening made in the top to clean
it out. After a few minutes, as he did not
come bach, search was made for him, but In
laid disappeared. lie ha I crawled through
the sewer to its mouth, oa the South Com
mons, and made good ins escape.
The Arlington Advance t.e'ls of a wonder
ful bonanza which has been discovered bv
Mr. 11. A. Lomax, of Calhoun county. It
says that while he was having a well dug on
his plantation, he discovered what he and
others supposed to he a diamond, nearly as
largo as a hickory nut. It is quite brilliant
and cuts glass readily. He is considerably
excited over the prospects of his good fort

The Ilinesville Gazette thinks that while
the people <jf Northeast Georgia a r e wild
over their rich “ finds" in tee gold regions,
the people in the l-w lands are becoming
alive to the fact that they luve {something
belter than goid mines at their floors. It

The West Point Press states that Mr. J.
Vf. Lancaster, who lives two miles fr< m West
Point, in that county,Wednesday killed with
a stone av. {i turkey that weighed f >rtv

two inches from tip to tip of the wings. The
Press sacs the thighs were as large around
;* a man's arm, and Mr. Lancaster supplied
i i* neighbors with the moat for several days
besides having a plenty at home.
The Talbotton Register states the follow
ing reminiscence: “About the year 1812
politics ran very high in Georgia, and e-pe

Sun vay School Celebration*
The annua! celebration of the Jackson coun
ty Sunday School association, will take place
sit Wood’s Camp Ground, on Thursday
before the third Sunday in July 1880, An
essay, speech and songs, will lie expected
from each school, and the various superin
tendents are requested to see that their schools
comply with this request. It is requested
that each school send two delegates on the
day previous to the celebration to attend the
delegates meeting, and assist in making the
accessary arrangements &c.
The executive committee will also meet at
the i.imo time and place.
It is earnestly desired that all the schools
in the county attend the celebration.
