/ IJI * \ icdMMITNIV.VTF.I) ] T$E VOICE OFIHE PEOPLE. Hurrah for Jackson , Hull, Forsyth and Gwin nett- Four Strong Counties—Three .of Them for Syecr, with Strong '** * Prottwility of the Other. Mu. Editor: —Business called me, and it has been my pleasure, to traverse the greater portiorfTof the ;vbovc named four counties. They are all. ns j'Oudrnow, large counties— Forsyth being the smallest—polling, I be lieve, about twelve or fourteen hundred votes. I propose to take up four counties, and from having been from one corner to the other and from one side to the other of thoso ments large ofthe-people. We will first take Jackson and Hail, and any fair minded roan is compelled to acknowledge that Mr. Speer will carry these two counties. As an evidence of this fact, some among the host men of these two counties arc disposed to lie candid and admit this, although opposed to Mr. Speer. The fact can’t be questioned that he has gained largely in these two coun ties since the last election, and lias lost none. Forsyth count)', the home of Mr. Bell, will give him but a small majority. In fact, it is claimed by some of the best men of the coun ty |s doubtful whether Mr. Bell will carry Ills county or not. I know this to be true, that I found sections in Forsyth where you could, not fjnd a Bell man. C * now come to Gwinnett. Wo have heard much of this county in the last few years. t "lils this cfcunty that was to give a majority of 1,000 against Mr. Speer two years ago, and which only gave lfB against him, was it not ? ’lf, therefore, the opposition to Mr. Speer / lacked 842 votes of carrying Gwinnett by the majority they expected two years ago, how can they hope to carry it this time when they orfly claim about 200 P and you see they miss- ed their mark 842 votes before. I have been over the greater portion of G winnett; have hoard the. people express themselves, and particularly the old and middle-aged tnen, and can say boldly, without fear of contra diction, that at the polls in that county on the day of election Mr. Speer will carry Gwinnett county. After the joint discussion in LawrenceviUe between Messrs. Speer and Bell, I witnessed scores of the best men in every portion of the county, come to Mr. Speer and tell him they did all they could against him before, but would do all in their power for him this time. I quote the language of one who signs him self “Democrat,” in your issue of the 24th ult., who says : “ Two of the most prominent : .- Speer men we saw were Jesse J. Cook and “ Devil” Bill Robinson. They would make occasional visits: to an adjacent bar-room and tr ...return with ‘V ah for -Speer!’” I--would 4 gently say that.the most, prominent Bellman >1 saw was an old Cow-Bell behind the counter i in the said-adjacent bar-room mentioned by “ Democrat,” and when ita doleful sounds were heard it had a happier effect on the Bell men than the eloquence- of their chieftain, wiip had deposited the “stuff” -that caused it to ring. It brought vividly to the minds of the few Bell ,meu that their chieftain had something deposited there that would cheer ltiieir drooping and hopeless spirits, and make them, in their revelfogs, imagine for ‘awhile that^Gwignet^would give him 1,000 majority. I would, in conclusion, beg all those who •v *T ° love justice and right— who hold liberty dear —who had rather be freemen than slaves —to work for the principles you advocate, and our ■jC-haiupiou, Mr. Speer, will bo elected by an overwhelming majority. Our motto should be— Lot him now work who never worked before, lie- who always worked now work the more. A. G. L. The First Baby. BY HATTIE HATEFUL. Did you ever think anything about Eve and her first baby? I have, and often won dered how she and Adam received the little C'uin. Did Eve mistrust that Cain was com itig to visit her? and did she sew little, tender fig-leaves into tiny apron, and put them away in some hollow tree? (Of course they had • ,h*>daw trees !) I wonder if Adam ever dreamed of the lit . tie red-faced, pug-nosed, sleepy -eyed squal ler, before the baby voice aroused him from his hitherto unbroken slumbers? Did he gaze into the little face, and touch the little clenched hands with feelings of awe and amaze ment ? Did he pass his own toil-stained fin gers over the delicate baby flesh, and marvel how it could be so soft and velvety? Did ire hold his breath when Cain treated his pa rents to his first oonccr? Or did the dis tracted parent take the little rascal and walk the garden with him? I wonder if Adam ever was obliged to get up from his warm nest and pace the floor of the garden corner, called home, with the first baby drooping over his left shoulder, squall ing with all his might? Did little Cain ever and sert-am, and stiffen his cunning little ' nek-bone in his wrath, until even Adam Vi not bend him? vVas it cold enough there to freeze Adam’s -ight fig-lenf. and did he walk his garden lomo with the fig-leaf, frozen stiff behind , him? Did he ever get mad and swear? Did c4p baby scratch and bite, pull hair and daub nflblasses over the clean fig-leaves upon the company, as he grew older? Did he get his teeth without Mrs. Winslow’s aid? Was he called the most beautiful baby in all the world? Poor little Cain I lie had no aunts to pet him; no uncles to wish him to Jericho; and Worse than - ail that, he had no fond grandpa-, nor grandma to spoil him. Did you ever think how utterly miserable Mrs. Eve rnifst have been when there was no dobtor to call in, to shake his head over the child’s measles or mumps ! Did they have the measles then? Dear me ! I might keep > °n asking forever, and only echo would an swer. If'you ever see anybody that lias been there, do ask them to answer me. Ml T TANARUS& OF ATF * y a cf t * /a ff fj IJr. /. 11.
