Hurrah for Jackson, Hall, 'Forsyth and Givin
nett■—Four Strong Counties—Three
of Them J'o/ Syeer, ipith Strong
Fv 1 "" i ojf the O','/.’,.
Mu. Editor :—Business called me, and it
has been my pleasure, to traverse the greater
portionTof the above named four counties.
They arc all, as you'lcnow, large counties—
Forsyth being the smallest—polling, I be
lieve, about twelve or fourteen hundred votes,
f propose to take up four counties, and
from having been from one corner to the
other and from one side to the other of these
respective poupjLics,
ments <f f a
will first take Jackson and Hall, and any fair
minded man is compelled to acknowledge
that Air. Speer will carry these two counties.
As an evidence of this fact, some among the
best men of these two counties aro disposed
to be candid and admit this, although opposed
to Mr. Speer. The fact can’t be questioned
that he has gained largely in these two coun
ties since the last election, and has lost none.
Forsyth county, the home of Mr. Bell, will
give him but a small majority. In fact, it is
claimed by some of the best men of the coun
ty |S doubtful whether Mr. Bell will carry
ins county or.not. I know this to be true,
that I found sections in Forsyth where you
couhhnot find a Bell man.
j now come to Gwinnett. Wo have heard
much of this county in the last few years.
Ills this-county-that’was to give a majority
of 1,000 against Mr. Speer two years ago, and
which ouly gave 158 against him, was it not ?
If, therefore, the opposition to Mr. Speer
t. lacked 842 votes of carrying Gwinnett by the
majority they expected two years ago, how
can they hope to carry it this time when they
otlly claim about 200 ? and you see they miss
ed their mark 842 votes before. I have been
over the greater portion of Gwinnett; have
hoard the. people express themselves, and
particularly the old and middle-aged men,
and can say boldly, without fear of contra
diction, that at the polis in that count}’ on
the day of election Mr. Speer will carry
Gwinnett county. After the joint discussion
in Lawrenceville between Messrs. Speer and
Bell, I witnessed scores of the best men in
every portion of the county, come to Mr.
Speer and tell him they did all they could
qgainst him before, but would do all in their
power for him this time.
I quote the language of one who signs him
self “Democrat,” in your issue of the 24th
lilt., who says : “ Two of the most prominent
.-jSlpeer men we saw were Jesse J. Cook and
“ Devil” Bill Robinson. They would make
occasional visits-to an adjacent bar-room and
..oreturn with ‘’jrab fpr Speer!’” I-‘would
gently say that the nkonU prominent Bell man
J Baw was an old Cow-Bell behind tha counter
ia tlio said adjacent bar-room mentioned by
“ Democrat,” aiul when Ha doleful sounds
were heard it had a happier eifoctou the Bel!
men than the eloquence- of their chieftain,
deposited the “stuff” that caused it
to ring. It brought vividly to the minds of
the few Bell .ineu that their chieftain had
something deposited there that would cheer
pthoi]: drooping aud hopeless spirits, and make
them, in their revetfngs, imagine for 'awhile
timt^GwiqnQt, would give him 1,000 majority.
* I would, In conclusion, beg all those who
love justice aud right — who hold liberty dear
—who had rather be freemen than slaves —to
work for the principles you advocate, and onr
champion, Air. Speer, will bo elected by an
overwhelming majority. Our niotto should
he—
Let him now work who never worked before,
And ho who always worked now work the more.

The First Baby.
BY IIATTIE HATEFUL.
I)iil you ever think anything about Eve
■and her first baby? I have, and often won
dered how she and Adam received the little
Gain. Did Eve mistrust that Cain was com
,;mg to visit licr? and did she sew, little, tender
fig-leaves into tin}’ apron, and put them away
iik some hollow tree? (Of course they had
■ -hoiluw trees f)
I wonder if Adam ever dreamed of the lit
tie red-laced, pug-nosed, sleepy-eyed squal
lor, before the baby voice aroused him from
his hitherto unbroken slumbers? Did he
gaze into the little face, and touch the little
clenched hands with feelings of awe and amaze-
ment ? Did he pass his own toil-stained fin
gers over the delicate baby flesh, and marvel
how it could be so soft and velvetv? Did
he hold his breath when Cain treated his pa
rents to his first concer? Or did the dis
tracted parent take the little rascal and walk
tlie garden with him?
I wonder if Adam ever was obliged to et
P from his warm nest and pace the floor of
the garden corner, called home, with the first
baby drooping over his left shoulder, squall
ing with all his might? Did little Cain over
yt*!! and sertam, and stiffen his cunning little
’ nek-bone in his wrath, until even Adam
M not bend him?
vVas it cold enough there to freeze Adam’s
-ight fig-leaf, and did he walk his garden
mine with the fig-leaf, frozen stiff behind
, him? Did he ever get mad and swear? Did
baby scratch and bite-, pull hair and daub
iuTdasses over the clean fig-leaves upon the
company, as he grew older? Did he get his
teeth without Mrs. Winslow’s aid? Was he
called the most beautiful baby in all the
world? Poor little Cain ’he had no aunts to
pet him; no uncles to wish him to Jericho;
and Worse than all that, he had no fond
grandpa, nor grandma to spoil him.
Did you ever think how utterly miserable
Mjs. Eve miTst have been when there was no
dob Lor to call in, to shake Ins head over the
child’s measles or mumps ! Did they have
the measles then? Dear me ! I might keep
; on asking forever, and only echo would an
swer. If*you ever see anybody that has been
there, do ask them to answer, me.
