Wayside Gatherings.
A society has been found in Philadelphia
to secure the appointment of Roman Catholic
chaplains for some of the regular army regi
rnents.
A political procession at Dunbarton, N.
11., was delayed while a young man took his
sweetheart down from what he considered her
unbecoming position as a£toddess of Liberty.
A boy stole away from a Cincinnati school
and spent the day playing hall, for which lie
was mildly reprimanded by the teacher. He
immediately retired to an ante-room and shot
himself.
The question of negro children in public
schools has been excitedly raised in Pitts
burgh, where one Commissioner gives them
formal permits to attend, and the other Com
missioners forcibly eject them.
New Orleans is threatened with a Celestial
invasion. Ten thousand Chinamen are said
to be planning a descent upon the city from
Cuba. An agent recently has received or
ders from twenty planters for laborers of this
class.
A train on the Memphis and Charleston
Railroad was stopped by a man who gave a
danger signal with a flag. Then Ik took de
liberate aim with a gun at the engineer, and
killed him. He subsequently explained that
he was out hunting locomotives. lie proved
to be a lunatic.
Among the gifts displayed at a San Fran
cisco wedding was the bride’s father’s check
for SIOO,OOO. The cashier of the bank on
which the check was drawn was a guest. It
was observed that lie looked queerly at the
document, then turned up his nose, and re
marked : “ Why, he hasn’t SSOO to his credit
in our bank.”
Mr. and Mrs. Tinsley were divorced 3 r ears
ago at Columbus, Ind. Both made subsequent
matrimonial ventures, he taking four wives
in succession, and she two husbands. At
length, both being free, they discussed their
varied experience, admitted that neither had
been happy since their parting, and finally
were reunited.
We are now, says the Sun, able to estimate
with some degree of accuracy our wheat
harvest for this year. It will probably be
about four hundred and sixty million bushels.
Allowing, say, two hundred and sixty million
bushels for home use, that would give us two
hundred for export, against one hundred and
eighty-five million bushels exported in 1870.
What's the use—what on earth, we say, is
the use of talking about art culture in San
Francisco, when it is an open secret that a
certain rich mining man recently sent to
Florence for a copy of the “ Venus of Milo,”
and when the statue was delivered actually
jjued the Central Pacific Railroad Company
for mutilating a work of art, and, what is
teore recovered large damages. —Sun Fran •
vt&co Post. See the joke ? The Venus of
Milo is itself a mutilation.
An elephant is used in a spectacular play
in Pliilidelphia. He is kept iu a stable sev
eral blocks away, and taken to the theatre
every evening at the proper point in the
piece. One afternoon he took it into his
head that the time had come to perform.
Throwing his keeper aside, he burst into the
street, overturned a wagon and several street
stands on his way to the theatre, smashed a
door, and took his usual place on the stage.
The absence of lights and audience seemed
to convince him that lie had made a mistake
arud he suffered himself to be led back to the
stable.
An Indian thief was turned over to the
chief of his tribe, at San Diego, Cal., and by
him sentenced to receive a hundred lashes.
The culprit was a big, powerful fellow ; but
he submitted quietly to being tied to the side
of a high wagon, with his legs and arms ex
tended, and his back bared. A stalwart In
dian struck the blows with all his might, us
ing a leather lariat, and making the blood
flow at every stroke. The victim endured
the dreadful torture in grim silence for a
while, and then broke out into agonized
screams. If he had remained silent to the
end, the chief would have restored him to
the tribe; but, as he “cried like a coward
baby,” he was afterwards driven out of the
.neighborhood.

A Monster Steamship.
The largest screw steamship ever built at
London has just been launched. She will be
the pioneer of anew line, three more ships
of which are now being constructed to ply
between London and New York. These ves
sels are to be loaded with passengers and or
dinary freight on the outward passage, and
on their return are to take their caago in the
shape of live oxen and bulk grain. The
steamers of the new line are constructed es
pecially to accommodate this character of
freight. The oxen will be carried on two
decks, while the grain will be placed in the
hold, stored in iron bins. The length of the
ship just launched is three hundred and sev
enty feet, with a breadth of forty-three feet
and a depth of thirty-two feet six inches, and
her displacement when loaded with a free
board of no less than fourteen will be seven
thousand five hundred tons. Her engines
are two thousand five hundred horse-power
cifective. She is built entirely of steel, made
on the Siemens Martin process, and has a
continuous double bottom on the principle
adopted by the admiralty. She has four
decks, the upper one of teak and two of iron,
sheathed with wood, and seven water tight
bulkheads. She will be classed at Lloyd's
in the highest grade, as will all her sister
ships.
