ROB’T S. HOWARD, Editor.
JEFFERSON,
FRIDAY WOK*'l*43. Aov'lht. 38, I*o.
,J.p B'wn the boss !
Why not trv a dog law, for fun ?
AH of Ilia big men are making for Wash
ington.
“ Blue Jean.J* Williams, Ex-Governor of
Indiana, is dead.
The lease of the State Road is likely to
cause some trouble.
Since the election but little news is afloat
in the political world.
Thieves and pick-pockets are reaping a
golden harvest in Atlanta.
Gen. Grant is going into a project to run a
railroad to the Capital of Mexico.
When the Irish are not starving they arc
growling at the English government.
The rate of interest is again before the
Legislature. Let it alone, is our cry.
Ex-Senator Gordon is the attorney of the
Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company.
An effort is bring made in the present
Legislature to increase the salaries of all the
State officers.
Gov. Colquitt’s next vindication is to be
made when lien Hill’s successor is appointed
to the Senate.
President Hays will he one <if the few mei,
that made money out of the Presidency. lie
took all of his in cash instead of reputation.
We are opposed to the making of any more
branch colleges in Georgia, unless the plan is
made so that all schools above a certain grade
can get a hand in the pay.
The Rev. Warren Candler wants editor
licensed like lawyers and doctors, lie forget."
that they are made in heaven like preaches
and cannot be created by human power.
We trust that our Representatives, as well
as the whole Legislature, will interest them
selves in the Geological Survey of the State
Let the good work go on without further
liinderance. #
lien Hill advises the abandonment of the
Democratic party and the formation of anew
one. So far he is alone in his undertaking, j
but it is said that lie lias inaiJe a convert of
Reast Butler.
It is predicted that Senator Bayard will be
the Democratic leader in the Senate. The
good Lord deliver us from his leadership, is
our humble prayer. The South has had too
much of it already.
The banner which Georgia won from Texas,
on the Presidential election in 187 G, will now
be turned over to the State authorities of
Kentucky, that State having given the largest
Democratic majority.
The present sitting of the Legislature will
be adjourned until next summer, and we will
bet a hat on it. That section of the new
Constitution which provides only for biennial
sessions is, and will be, a perfect nullity.
A young lady of Atlanta wore a two thou
sand dollar dress at the Inaugural Ball in that
city not long since. A bungling chap stepped
on it and injured it to the amount of S.)O.
Wonder if she will sue him for damages ?
It will take several thousand dollars in cash
and a good sized subscription in order to
induce somebody to write a history of our
IStale. The work should be done, and by a
competent man, and every facility should be
given him to make bis work exhaustive.
The Legislature, on last Tuesday week,
elected lion. Joseph E. Brown United States
Senator for the term of six years, from 4th of
March, 1881. 11c was opposed by Gen. A.
R. Lawton. The vote stood: In Senate—
Brown 28. Lawton 16; House—Brown 118
Lawtou 48.
Klberton is making a name. The latest
industry put on foot in that enterprising town
is a sewing machine manufactory. That is
one of the results of a narrow guagc railroad.
Why, Jefferson will he manufacturing hand
organs in less than three years after our rail
road is completed.
A convention of the Christian Bible people,
commonly called Campbellites, was held in
Atlanta week before last. It was well at
tended, and developed some very strong tal
ent in the pulpit of this denomination. The
meeting seems to have been harmonious, and
doubtless productive of much good.
More room is needed for the Lunatics of
the State. The officer in charge of the As\-
lum recommends the building of a branch
institution somewhere in Northeast Georgia.
W e cannot see the economy in this step, but
if it has to be built, we want our neighbors
up in Hall county to get the building. We
notice that their Representative is working in
that direction.
A Georgia correspondent of the New York
Times makes this comparison : *• Brown and
Ben Hill are men of diametrically opposite
characters. Hill is quick', impulsive and
magnetic: Brown is cool, calculating and
rather repulsive in his manner. Brown never
* makes a mistake in his judgment. Hill is
erratic. These two men are at the head of
Georgia politics to-day, and they are probably
the two ablest men who represent any Southern
State in the Senate.” They will work well
together in harness.
The best news we have heard for Georgia
in sometime is embodied in a telegram from
Switzerland to the e fleet that the agent of the
Air-Line road had secured one hundred Swiss
emigrants for settlement along the line of that
enterprising road. Should these be satisfied
with their new homes, we may expect to see
thousands of these excellent and industrious
people settled amongst ns. When they come
we will tel, you more about them, and the
result of their settling amongst ns.
