Way side Gathering s. The hrnlc and biidgeroom at a Nashville wedding had only one leg apiece. A 3*onng man died of heart disease at St. Paul while asking a girl to marry him. Denis Kearne\, li e agitator, has return'd to his <' rav, in San Fianei.se> . lie says that he is ottl of pocket through politics, and is glad to go to work again in his old line. The South Carolina census includes the following townships: Giddy Swamp, Due West. Long cane, Tabernacle. Dark Corner, Alligator, Kbenezer. Sammy Swamp. Pee Dec, Pncotaiigo, Seullletown, Privateer, Swimming Pens, l’umpkintown, and Turkey. The sarcophagus of Roger of Toscany, Bishop of Lausanne, who was buried in Lau Ramie Cathedral in 1220. was opened a few weeks ago. The body was almost intact, the features wore perfectly recognizable, and the six and a half centuries had not sufficed to destroy the texture of his episcopal robes. A Cabinet Minister is a! ways in attendance upon the Queen when she is out of England. Members of the Cabinet take the duty by turns. The Minister in attendance is required to be almost all the time within call, as the Queen may need his counsel at any moment. When he does not dine with her he may dine alone or with the Lord in Waiting. Farmer Dorsey undertook to replace the tire on a wagon wheel at Mercer, Va. The ordinary pro ess is to expand the tire by heating it, and slip it into place, where it tightens by contraction as it cools. But in this instance there was trouble at every stage of the work. The lire was not hot enough, the tire was not a true circle, and after spend ing half a day fruitlessly at the job, the ex asperated man committed suicide. Henry Holtenburg had black hair and a ruddy complexion when he married Miss Schwarz, at Nashville, a year ago. She sup posed he was about forty, though he made no statement on that point. The honeymoon was scarcely over before his hair became gray, his cheeks lost their color, and he showed at least sixty years. The fact was that he had discontinued the use of dye and rouge. The angry wife wanted to sue for divorce, but the lawyer told her that Use grounds were not sufficient. The worst she could do was to desert him, which she lost no time in doing. Mrs. Anna Stiles had twoneghbors, at south Windsor, Cenn., whom she hated, and sent the in two packages of poisoned candy by mail. Two families were made dangerously ill. hut only one life was lost. Mrs. Stiles was arrested, but before the time for her trial she became insame. That was nine years nsto. Now the physicians of the asylum in which she has spent the interval pronounce her fully recovered, and she is to be tried for tiie crime which, she says, seems to her to have been committed only yesterday. Father Ignatius, the ritualist monk, was by last accounts more than ever convinced that the apparition seen at his monastery of St. Anthony, Wales, is the Virgin Mary. Ue lias himself twice beheld the fair visitant, and, as an illustration of the miracles wrought. Father Iguatius insists that an incurable cripple of thirty-seven years’ standing “has been instantly made to walk by the use of some leaves touched by the Virgin.” The reverend gentleman has written letters to both the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of St. David's,in whose diocese the monastery is, informing them of the miracle. Many pil grims now flock to the Abbey, where an altar lias been erected commemorative of the Vir gin's presence. The Flag of the Prophet Is in the custody of the Mohammedan chief priest, Shcik-ul, Islam, and is kept in the mosque of St. So phia in Stamboul. It is made of green silk. There is a large orescent on the top of the staff, from which hangs a Horsehair plume, claimed to have been the tail of Mohammed's favorite horse. On the folds of the flag me displayed the ere cent and certain tpiof a tions from the Koran. Mohammed adopted green as his emblematic color because nature is green, and it is ** everlastieg and univer sal.'* The following words are on the flag : who draw the sword will be rewarded with temporal advantages; every drop of their blood sited, every peril and hardship endu’vd by them, will be registered on high as more meritorious than either fasting or praying. I ’ they fall in battle their sins will be at once blotted out. and they will be tran sported to Paradise, there to revel in eternal pleasures in the arms of !la"k-eve 1 ho iries. Hut for the first heaven are reserve i those o! the faithful who die within sight of the green flag of the Prophet. There may no man give or expect money.” Cases of vitriol throwing are becoming so general in France that it would be difficult to chronicle all more or less successful attempts at disfigurement by means of the corrosive liquid which are almost daily committed by jealous spouses and abandoned sweethearts. Unfortunately the hand, especially the female hand, when bent on deeds of vengeance, be comes unsteady, aivf is apt to inflict unmerit ed injuries on those who happen to be in close proximity to the intended victim. A young woman named Ilortense Fabre has just been tried for throwing vitriol at her lover in Tou louse. Intent on taking a terrible revenge on -a young tradesman by whom she had been abandoned, site sought him out in a cafe where he was unsuspectingly playing cards with his brother and a friend, and, drawing a bottle of vitriol from her pocket, flung the contents at the group, without taking particu lar care only to direct her aim at the object of her revenge. The three men instinctively raised their arms to protect themselves, and fortunately the damage done was only to their clothes. Ilortense Fabre, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to a fine of $5, ■ C OIIE A S ’ storei TIIE LARGEST AND CHEAPEST STOCK OF FASHIONABLE gjpam, ■Fgpraßwcft, /jjsswscej feT: lacs*# |UI f 6*s** 2 Ji 1 H 1 A**es**| hLi %J jNT JD Dress Trimmings in if. 22, Greorgia S CLOAKS AND DOLMANS.
