H TOMLINSON, Ch’ mn. James M. fiamtjh.ck, Sec’ry. I.aroe Bank Dividends.— The Marine frnd Fire Insurance Bank of Savannah I a> declared a semi-annual dividend of nine per cent, upon its capital stock, payable or demand. ‘This is not only interesting to tha stock holders, hut it reflects the h'ghost credit upon the skill, judgment and fidelity of its President and Directors, in the discharge of their duties, and at tho same time, it allows the solvent and flourishing condi tion of the institution. The Bank of Savannah and the Cen tral Railroad Banking Company have al so declared a dividend of four per -cent, each, from profits of the last six months. —<Sar. /iep. Laurel drove Conaeiiry. We received yesterdiy, i,i a neat pam phlet farm, an account of the dedication of this last renting pUca of the citizens of Savannah, with a poem by H >n. R. M. Ch.vrt.ton and an address by Hon. Hk.vrt R. Jackson. VVa havemot yet had time to perusa them, though from the known ability of the authors, they are no doubt interesting. No llain* Yet.—We are on the tenth week of drought. One or two slight showers have filien in the city, but one mile off, at our residence, we have not bad rain enough to wet a sdk handker chief in ten weeks, and the prospect doss not brighten. The vegetables we have eaten had no rain upon them since the seed were planted. Corn and cotton in our neighborhood r.re absolutely too gloo my io speak of much less to look nt.— With good rains we can’t make a half; crop.— Fed. Union. Seventh Congressional District. —We perceive that the Democracy of Newton county have suggested to the Democrat- ! ic party of this district, the name of L Q. C. Lamar, Esq. of Newton county as a suitable person to he run for Congress, it the Democracy of this district determine so run a candidate for Congress, and we Hunk they should, we know of no man whom e would more cheerfully support ! than Mr. Lamar, fie is a young man, Gletued,- actittf and popular. As an or ator he WouliJ compare with the most popular speakers of ihe district. That he would he acceptable co the Democracy wre are well assured. We mean not to disparage the claims of others, hut will support any good Democrat who may be Chosen by delegates in a Convention of the counties of the district. The new* Territory of Washington is being rapidly settled up. The chief bu xintss of the settlers is the lumber trade, and there are now 15 large saw mills in successful operation in the Territory. Extension of the Eatonton Rail road. —A meeting wa3 held at Monticel lo on Tuesday by a portion of the citi zens of Jasper county, in vrhich initiatory teps were taken for the extension of the Eatonton Railroad to that town. Mr. T. R. Fisher is superintending the construction o? a steam carnage, nt the! Vulcan Works in Utica, which he designs ! for trial on ordinary roads. The vehi- ! cia will be completed in about a month, j when a farther report will be made. If j it succeeds, Mr. Fisher intends to man- ! ufacture a large number of the cv.r- j riagee. A Native Georgia Lion.— lrs theMe- nagerie, attached to Robinson & Eld red’s i Circus, is a young; Hon about two months j old, a native of Georgia. It was nursed j when very young by Mrs. Robinson. WnsAT.—There never has been a finer j Wheat crop in Cherokee than we have this year. In Whitfield, Murray, Walker, and Gilmer, and in fact, all the upper conn lies can boast of fine Wheat crops. This week our farmers are busy with the cra dle — Dalton Times. Killed by Lightning. — During; a thun der storm on the 7th insf., severs; negroes belonging to 13. F. Taylor, of Bibb coun ty, took refuge under a tree, which was struck by lightning, killing one of the ne groes instantly, and stunning three others for a time. One third of the whole Spanish army, or twenty thousand men, are stationed at Cuba. There are sixteen vessels of war employed on the coast; and Spain expends anually sixteen millions of dol lars for military service upon land, and four and a half millions for defence on the seas. Florida Indian's.— General Fierce, it is stated, deems it advisable to refrain from harshness as Far as possible, in the remov al of the remnant of the Seminole Indians from Florida. The Survey of the public lands in that slate will he proceeded with, in order to convince Billy Bowlegs and his adherents that it is essential for (heir welfare to quietly join their breth ren west of the Mississippi. By survey ing and selling the lands, and allow ing the whites to settle upon and clear them, the Indians would soon be literally fenced out of the country. Col. James L.
