For the Jeffersonian!! icct Scliooi. i'■ eximiiuatiou of tiie pupils of this pchooh took place on the 29th and 30th ult. The several classes were examined 011 the classics, .na’ hematics and sciences, evincing a commendable proficiency on the part of the students. . Tll <s examination was minute, and suffi cie.itly extended to manifest the real pro gress of the pupil, ami the method in whieh his studies had been pursued through the Term. This was the more gratifying, ns it is too often the case, that a few set questions, or attention being directed to a few elementary principles of study, leave the mind of the audience uncertain, cither as to the extent or method of study; and the object of an examination entirely or in a good degree defeated. And we would especially commend the course pursued in the classical department in examining more particularly in the La tin and Greek Grammar, showing that the good old way, and the only correct way, of acquiring a correct knowledge of these languages, is pursued in this school. And the whole course of the examination, in the several branches of study, manifested great labor and effort had been made in e ideavoring to impart instruction 0:1 the part ot tlic touche’ - , and that the object was to advance the student, until study would become a pleasure. The concluding exercises of the school Avere held in the Concert Hall, on Friday evening, constsling of declamations by the young men. Their efforts were commend able, and gave promise oa the part of most of them, of success in that most dif ficult of all a-q lisidoas —that of correct public speaking. \Y r e take great pleasure in commending this school to parents and guardians, as one that is well governed and well taught, and hope that the prin cipal will meet from this community that encouragement he deserves. I Masonic Hall, Tiurxosinr Lodge, ( April 7tli, 1553. $ At a called cammunication of Friend ship Lodge Xo. 114, under dispensation] of Free and Accepted Masons, at their Lodge-room in Jackson Parish, Louisi ana, convened tor the purpose of paying the last sa.d tribute of respect to the memory of our deceased Brother Alfred Cuthbert Moore. The following pream ble and resolutions were unanimously a uopted, an 1 ordered to be spread on the minutes, viz: \\ licreas, In the inscrutable decrees of Providence, it ha; pleased the Great Ar ch’Sect of Heaven to remove -from oar midst, our esteemed and worthy Brother Alfred Cuthbert Moore from his labors in this Lodge, to refreshment in the Grand Celestial Lodge above!—Therefore Be it Resolved, That this alUietive dis pensation has caused us the profoiuidest .sorrow. Resolve i, T.iat a copy of the foregoing preamble and resolutions be forwarded to the f im’ly ot our deceased Brother A. C. M an l tn.P the “Georgia Jefferso nian'’ be requested to publish the same. A. M. POLK, Sec’ry Democriel ic Meeting. The Jem ‘cruts of Bibb had a county meeting on Saturday I• s<, lor the purpose of ratifying the nomination of Judge Johnson for Governor and Col D. J B tiley for Congress, from this District, also for the purpose of pulling in nomi nation a tie :l for the Senate and House of Bepresntatives for this county. The “II itifieation” part <J the business was performed, but owing to a discrepancy of views about the pacific Railroad, and in view of the number of aspirants sot legislative honors in ihs party, a motion was mode and carried, requesting each district i.i the county to send five dele gates to the county convention to he held at ilie Court 111-use on the Ist Saturday in September, for the purpose of nomi nating a candidate for Senate and two Representatives. “e notice that Gen. J. \Y. Armstrong a Union Democrat wa President of the meeting, and that Judge C. B. Cvle, another Union democrat, was a, poin'ed on the committee, to re t.-,}■[ business. From a letter in the last ’ iurna! and Messenger, we perceive that and 01. A. 11. Chappell, another Union dem ocrat has also given in h:3 adhes..’ l to the re-organized dynasty. I hits we go. 7'he most of those in this section; who were constitutional Union democrats, in !Sbl, and who then co-operating with Jenkins in erecting the “Georg'a plat form” have no confidence, whatever, in i}.... political wisdom of those who met fit Milledgcville on the 22<l June. Col. i’happell expressly repudiates lha idea that the convention of that day revived pv ie-orgmiized iha Union p.uty of Geor gia, and positively declines identifying; himself with those under whose banner ■ lie would inevitably find himself in a position of alliance with tr.e National party and of hostility to the Nation id demutratic to which lj£ has long .been attached, and in which lie still has con fluence. We ore not prepared to say that Col. Chappell is in error in his views of the case, though his position with the Sou 1 It em Rights party is certainly not • free from difficulties, tie is honestly oppos ed to disunion sentiments and yet finds himself co-operating vyiih those who but lately held iberp. Three years since he hauled manfully as a leader in behalf ol Union arid the Constitution. Now he goes to the fooi of the class in tAt South ern Rights school, and must spell up, il j he is not reffiSrfeahiv favored above oth ers of his stamp! Well this was nil the Col. could do, under the circcumstances, unless he stood aloof from both parties. Mr. Toomh’s new sectional party has certainly no fascination for any lower of the National Union and We do not rnafvet at the Union democrats refusing'alliance with it. We think, however, That when Such men ns Armstrong, Lamar, Cole and Chappell, lay aside their just preju dices against the principles of the Fire- Eaters, and agree to re organize on the old platform of Democracy, due honor should be shown them, the first opportu nity. That opportunity we suggest, will occur, on the first Saturday of September when the demonratic county Convention meets to form aticket for the Legislature. U e would fain hope tnat this may have been the objeci of this postponement of that business—to give time for a selec tion of tiie ablest men of the,re-organized Democracy, to the exclusion of whipper snapper politicians who are now indulg ing in ihc idea, that as the scum of u boding caldron always comes to the top they will have a chance, by keeping up au excitement and throwing themselves into it, to elevate to legeslative dignity - ? 1 he postponement for two months, will, ; we apprehend, be sufficient to trnsli into lion-er.tiiy that mmjqnt of sell-conceit which now “wriggles;’’ so rampantly in the cerebellum of certain rickettv poli ticians! So mote it be! —Macon Citizen. Fire isi the Low Lnutls. As will be seen by a communication in our paper to day from an esteemed source, South-Western -Georgia is in a blaze of enthusiasm. We are also in formed that in the wire-grass counties, the name of Jenkins is sweeping every tiling before it. Thousands of patriotic democrats are catching the inspiration ; and wheeling into line, upon the noble, platform over which floats the Union • Banner, prepsrd once more to stand, 1 shoulder to shoulder, with whigs in de fence of the Constitution. Southern , lie coidcr. July sth. From the above it will he seen that our 3d street neighbor has no mean rival , in the Manufacture of enthusiasm for Mr. Jenkins. In the previous issue of this Recorder, we had accounts that all Cher okee was in a hlazj of excitement when it was physically mu possibly that half of Cherokee could at that June,) have known who was the nominee of the convention. And now we have it that “in the wire grass counties, Ihe name of Je kins is sweeping everything before it,” although half the people of Lowndes, Ware, Telfair, Irwin, and other “ wire-* grass’ counties have not yet heard who is the nominee ( f either party.-, A friend who ; has relumed home from a trip into sever al of these counties, declares that there was no talk about p diticS much less ex-: citement on the subject, in that region. In view of this fact, v£,e may well ns4c our metropolitan cotempbry, cui What is tiie use of sum hyperbole as; that used by him on this subject. We protest against all such clap trap devices as injurious to Mr. Jenkins instead of n . benefit. If Mr. Jenkins is as popular as! is pretended, of couise it will not be worth while for bis friend*, to work for his election, lie will be made Governor by “.spontaneous combustion,” as he was made Y'ica President last fall! —Credit Judaeus apj.ella.
