I)a;anrreotjr{K!ii ‘ We call the attention of our tenders to Mr. Lunquest’a advertisement. He lias provided himself with the best mate rials for taking superior likenesses, and his skill in the profession will recommend him to an extensive patronage. YVe have -**en many oi M. Us likenesses, which ‘ ou, ‘l do cred t to Chestnut Street in ! Iniadeiphia. It is too common to give fo-tign skill a preference merely because it is foieign. This is wrong. Home proluctinns should always he fostered and encouraged iwheu they are equal the son ign. Ecce Sign iim No impartial observer could have fail ed to have recognized the present nation 'll repose since the elevation of Franklin Fierce to the Presidency. Heretofore the public primary meetings anti conven tions a! the North, were converted into ’4>al engines upon our domestic quietude a P‘* security. And the tespeclivc adminis trations if not per sc by its sttong and ef fective friends defering and conniving at mu-Ii rein 1!ion. Now tempera mutantur , a ! sect ons ate rex i'ing each other in their magnanimous effort to restore confidence and fellowship to the entire nation. This arises Irom two adequate reasons. The first, because of the admitted deterniina tto-nof the President to suppress all agita t on by the power conferred upon him; sa eondiy, because of the moral influence of his own individual opinions, and the hope hss fatuity at any effort to array itself in opposition to the known ami settled pol icy of the party in power. \ our marshals promptly arrest the fu gitive ar.d commit him to the jurisdiction ■ ! the executive offi.-er. He faithfully re sponds to his duty, and the whole tna . .or:cry moves gracefully and effectually. No m> h, no meetings of your sanctuaries, vo conventions dare hurl defiance into .ho teeth of your iron nerved chief, to rest i*s allegiance to his duty and authoi itv. N;t so with his pliant, timid, slip pery pre'ecessor, who was insulted and trampled upon from every oyster house crew, to every petty principality with which chance may have thrown him in collision. All hail to our happy coun try ! Thrice hail to our immaculate chief! Teeming millions of grateful hearts, ring j t :eir ptaises in swelling chorus! Johns?*! and Jenkins alCassTille • . *27th uSt. YVe have in hand a letter just received from a friend present at the discussion, and after slating,*lhat under the arrange ment of the agreement,,Judge’*Johnson was entitled to the'conclusion. He then writes that “Judge Johnson followed, and 1 teirVou candidly it was the most hap py and co'mplete triumph I ever saw one great man obtain over unothu'. Judge Johnson - p Minced in and upon- Mr.. Jen kins, until Mr. Jenkins himself gave evi dent signs of trouble, which seemed to delight the Democrats* and trouble the Whigs. So troubled and wearied were they {.> it, they were actually taken with ; a tbsgraceful stampede, and consoled j tr.en selves by say ing it was because John son had the conclu^on.” This was a clear capitulation on the j*r! of he Algerines, and the hero of Al gerine celebrity stiuck his colors amidst !;:*• ll ght of his friends. This is the only spot in the, olitical Ui?k nf Cherokee, over which hung the veil of gloom and •l.sconten!, and now that old Hickory J hn>on; has poured a burning flood of ght and truth 6pon our people, nil will i se and shout in one rapturous strain to the harmonious democracy 7. Judge Jahnsan and secession The Recorder's Editor asks with much self satisfaction: “'A'hen immediate secession was open- Iv rcc un-i: end afloat the Micon meeting l-y Khett &.Co.,in IS-30, did be interpose tir.e word of dissent:” lie diJ. YVe well remember being present v. i h him in this office, at the time ■ f tl-e meeting in ftlacrn, and he expres sed himself to several gentlemen, as op posed entirely to the action of that med ia.:, if disunion cr secession was its object. Judge Johns m never has advocated se cession for any past came—and all t lie at tempts <>f his enemies to prove that he has, have resulted just as the case before n*. W ill the Recorder publish thin cor rec ti k? Federal l aion. What Party is it ? If we w ere asked now to answer the question whether the present Jenkins pat sy is the w hig party or not, w t* should have to admit that we were solely puzzled to decide. YYhen we see Jenkins, and Toombs, and .Stephens, and Dawson, all t.IJ wiiigs, travelling the State and labor with might and main to excite preju dice against a democratic President, one of the purest and best men the country has every produced, it iuoks like the same old whig party. IJul on the other band, when we find that in the whole cot n ies a si igle solitary individual c mnot be found who will acknow ledge himself a whig—that there is hnt one wh’g can didate for Congress who will admit that he tN a whig—that not half a dozen coun ties have even candidates for the Legisla tive who will not deny that they are ‘vti** it woa‘*l seem that the whig party, ts not already otic.'ly defunct in the State ofCigi, will aoo< disappear. But a • ;a'u,oa tn* other side, when we find that : le candidates for Congress aie ‘H °ld < v.: igs errepl oce, aad he was an ar!’i*{ Scj’.l whigfai y^ar—when we read otrei J iheuaaae of tlarl nc, Johnson, Trippe, Cal - Reese , and Stephens, all recently ui..g-, the party does look very whig gisb. Bat thea again, these same candi dates, though rfiost of them very ready to declare that they tr ere once whigs, never say that they are note whigs —at least in \ abhr. lu private, appeals are made to re-ters, as whig*, to stand up to whig can didates, hut never in public. No wco ler, • hea, that oit-siders are puzzled to decide wether the Jenkins pa - ty is the whig par ly or not. The less wonder, indeed, when they themselves actually do not know or will not confess what party it is. of them say that they are the Union party, some the Conservatives, some the Union Republican, some the Union Con servative, others the Conservative He pub'ican party. It is true that a few weeks ago whig meeting* were very com mou in middle and lower Georgia, but now “mu.n*s the word”—no whig meet ing now. It is true the Atlanta Republi can a few weeks ago said, “We are all whigs —we are all Union men.” But nev er again, till after the election, will the Atlanta Republican, or any other of the Jenkins presses, admit that the whigs Tn Georgia are Whigs They were w higs. before thd nominaiioiL they, are Con servative Union Republican rill after the election. Then they will find no difficul ty in becoming whigs again Advocate, 24/A vlt. Easy LesMdiis in Electioneering. Col. Calhoun, you do Hot know vour leason sir! You have not committed to memory your polttibeii cfbedl So stand up and listen to olir instruction if you wish to spend next \Vintet* in Washing ton: 1. I)o not tell the name of your party. If you call it whig, you will scare some old line democrats. If you call itUnion, you will frighten the Southern Rights whigs. If you call it the YVebsterian party, you’ll lose some Scott whigs. So call it nothing, sir, or what is the same thing, call it “Conservative men and Republi can citizens.” 2. Asa corollary lo the above, take no position widen will betray your princi ples. Indeed the best rule is to have no i principles at all, then you can’t commit j yourself. You erred against this rule i when you attacked the “monster Pierce.” If you abuse the President in this way, ; the democrats will prove to be a greater j “monster” to yonc party than Pierce ev ‘er was. So take anew position and try again. 3. Make a great blow about the Union, provided there are not many Southern Rights YY’ldgs present. Os course you are not simpleton enough to suppose that the Union is in danger, but you know it will be much safer if you are in Congress to protect it. So “hurrah for the glorious Union!” (This is a very important rule.) 4. Say nothing about Afiica. You might possibly lead the minds of your hearers to Algiers. From Algiers to Al gerine is but one step, and from “Algerine Law” to “defeat,” is not half a step for vou and Mr. Jenkins. There is no use in t ilking to the people about that abomina ble, infernal law; you can’t explain it well enough to make them vote for a man who would deprive them of their votes. i,lt don’t stand to reason,” they’ll tell you; to say nothing at all about it. And when any one says “ Algerine Law” to you, re ply “Union! Union!” to them. o. Abuse all parties generally;, call them impure, corrrpt office seekers, dem agogues, &c. The people will then think that you are pure r di interested, self-sacri ficing and patriotic. However, although tbs voters may be-corrupt, it does not fol low that their votes are, t? cast for you. That act purifies them, so don’t refuse a man’s vote because he happens to belong to a corrupt paity. 6th and lastly. To recapitulate briefly all the leading point's in-yous creed —call yourself whig among whigs, a Union matt among democrats, a Webster man among Ttvtinm Quids, assert no principles, glori fy the Union, abuse all parlies, and re member, ns you value the -'Union and your sett in Congress, say nothing about Afriea. —Dekalb Democrat. A New Kixd or Cotton.—The editor of the Tribune has seen a specimen of a new and'very beautiful sort of cotton, brought from among the Pine Indians of New Mexico, by an -officer of the Mexi can Boundary CoinmisshSm Its peculiari ty consists in a fine, silky staple, superior in length and strength to all kinds previ ously known. The seed has been intro duced into Texas, ana the plant will soon he grown there extensively. It has also the great advantage of not degenerating, and not requiring a renewal of the seed. The plant, if all these peculiarities are proved permanently to belong to it, must effect a revolution m cotton raising — N. Y. Mirror.
