of the box at New York, in which Uncle
Sam keeps his cash:
“1 he New York Sub-Treasury how
contains ten millions dollars in gold, and
a few hundreds in silver coin. The safe
containing the coin, is kept in the custom
house, and is composed of doable sheets of
iron, strengthened by cross bars or lattice
work of cast steel rods, between which no
instrument can cut or file. The safe is
fifteen feet Tbng, eight wide, and about as
fnany feet high. It is divided into two
apartments, in the inner one of which the
money is deposited; and it has three thick
iron doors, each having two locks, the
keys to which are distributed at night a
tnongtJic different clerks, the Assistant
Treasurer keeping himself the register of
the principal key, so that the safe cannot
be unlocked unless all arc present. On
the side of the safe are tiers of boxes, ca
pa'ole of holding in all, nine millions six
hundred thousand dollars. They are now :
tilled with coin, which is put up in bags of
a thousand dollars each, except a few con
taining small amounts for convenience in
making payments. The weight of the ten
millions of gold now in custody, is eigh
teen and three-quarter tons ”

TO GIVE a slili wider circulation to llteßn
publican, and thereby to bring Savannah
and its business more prominently before the coun
try, the Proprietors offer their Daily paper at
$5 00 a year, and their Tri-Weekly al $3,00, to
all new subscribers who pay in advance. To
the.ir present subscribers who do not choose to
pay in advance, (he paper will be furnished ut the
reduced rules on and after the first ol Januarr,
and (hose who have paid in advance will cred
ited accordingly.
We propose also to issue a Weekly paper, com
mencing early in November, at $2.00 a j car, to
be paid for invariably in advance. To clubs of
ten, the Weekly will be furnished at $15,00.
We make this reduction in the price ol the Re
publican for three reasons: First, because we
desire to scatter the paper overthis and the adjoin
ing Slates, in b'fder, as tar as we are üble, to ex
tend the relation's and increase the business of
Savannah, believing that whatever promotes the
prosperity 6Ttlfe fciiy Canftdt fail to exert a benefi
cial effect uffen our oWn forldfies.’ The great fa
cilities we possess for disliiWutlftg d(illy, tri wi ek
ly, and weekly intelligence, ’ bv our Railroad con
nections and steamboat liocs, encourage us to be
lieve that the undertaking will be, because it
ought to be. successful.
Secondly, became other papers throughout the
country are reducing their rates of subscription,
and we would place our readers upon a looting as
favorable us that enjoyed bv the read :rs of those
papers.
Thirdly, because we shall never be more able
to make the ieduction than at present. We would
00l boast of our success, yet we beg leave to say
that Hie support which our patrons have accorded
us up to this lime, enables us to make this reduc
tion, and thus to offer some slight acknowledg
ment tor their past lavors. We hope they will
sec in this fact reason lor a continuance ol their
putionnge, and for such efforts as they may find
il convenient lo make in procuring us additional
subscribers. The step we have resolved upon
must result in loss, without a large accession to
our subscription list.
The growing importance of Savannah, as a
commercial centre, to the Planter, the Merchant,
and indeed to all classes, at least, in this State,
renders’ ft unnecessary for us to offer any argu
ment wiry they should avail themselves of the
means thu's offered, for obtaining the latest and
most rcliuble intelligence Irom all quarters, both
by telegraph aiid the mails.
Remittances by mail may be made at our risk.
