SATURDAY MORNING, AUG. 8.
Married for Money.
A MISSISSIPPI BENEDICT MAKING OFF WITH
his wife’s GREENBACKS IS CAUGHT
AND MERCILESSLY MAULED ON
THE FIRST DAY OF THE
HONEYMOON.
A marriage was consuinated iu Ya
zoo City on Thursday last, which,
from i’..s inception lo the grand finale,
was the most extraordinary that has
ever occurred in any communtity —
the parties to the transaction were
white. The facts are these: Some
months ago, Mr. wooed and won
a buxom widow of some fifty summers,
named . Their courtship was one
of felicity and unalloyed bliss, and all
passed off as “merry as a marriage
lx 11,” until the twain were mad one
flesh. We will here state that the
widow possessed, besides other
“charms,” a pile of greenbacks, which
the gay and festive youth also had a
hankering after. But we are digress
ing.
The happy pair, on the day übi re
named, repaired to the hospitable
cabin of tlie sable and notorious pro
fessional, Dr. Doty, and sent for
’Squire Wilson to come hither and
perform Jthe solemn rites of m it
rirnony. The ’Squire answered the
. summons promptly, wheu they were
made one twain —the “doctor” offici
ating as groomsman, bridesmaid, etc.
Now he loved the fair widow and she loved him
And wedlock of each was their wish,
And so Sharkey Wilson cooked both into one,
And so he served up a h—l! of a dish.
As soon ns the ceremony was over,
a friend to the family hastened to
head quarters to prepare for their re
ception. The happy pair, accompa
nied by the Doctor, now wended their
way homeward. They scarcely crossed
the threshold when lie commenced
a vigilant search for the old woman’s
treasure. He soon found it, and on
the double-quick darted through the
back door. The daughter, also a wid
ow, bad been watching the movements
of her new made dad, took after him
through the corn, and captured the
flyiug fugitive near the house. Having
a rope, she downed and tied him se
curely to the root of a large mulberry
tree —and, with the aid of a good hick
ory, administered a castigation to the
patient, terrible to behold. The bride
soon staggered to the scene, to assist
her daughter in the work of recon
struction, and ns the licks would fall
heavily upon the back of her truant
husband, she would exclaim: “Oh, my
dear, how I love you; but, you cl—d
rascal; you stole my money.”
The piteous cries aud lamentations
of the now unhappy groom soon
reached the ears of the ever vigilant
police, Atkius and Collins, who hur
ried to the spot. The scene, when
he reached the trio, baffles descrip
tion. Tied to the roots of the trees
was the husband of only a few hour’s
creation; the step-daughter, with her
night-clothes torn into threads, stick
iu hand, and rapidly repeating the
licks, while the bride was punching
him in the ribs with her fist, calling
him thief, robber, ku klux, using cuss
words, etc., and demanding her
money. The groom would look up
imploringly at the polieo and claim
their protection, adding, “Jack, untie
me; these cl and women have got mo
foul.” The ground around the con
flict, and stick also, were covered with
hair, dry goods, buttons, etc., belong
ing to the young widow. To end tho
melee, the police released the gav
Lothario and separated the parties.
Thus ends their honeymoon, at least
for the present. — [ Yazoo Citj (Miss.)
