The full mid official returns confirm the good news of the recent elections. The Deu.ocra’s have a majority in I lie next Tf mse of Representatives of fr >m forty to fifty, and will theref• r* cnn tr and its ore a >iz it ion. In this new era of roneiliation and good feeling, we think that our Northern href linn could not do a more kindly or grace ful act than lo concede the position of Speaker to a member from a South ern State. If we are correct in this view, we think that the claims of Georgia the Banner State amongst the late ''reconstructed,” should, without anoganeo, lie regarded as paramount. In that uolde l>nnj£of patriots which she sends to represent her, is the gen tleman whose name hea ls this article, for whom we claim the position its our first choice, and we believe the first choice of aonnjority of the party. We know of none, who unites the re quisite qualifications of firmness, quickness and urbanity, with a thor ough knowledge of parliamentary law in a higher degree than Mr. Har tridge. Our personal acquaintance with him is slight and we have no claims upon him except such its we share in common with every other eit isiiU. But we do know his great abil ities and sterling patriotism; and we would like to see the proud old days come back, when Georgia should be ns worthily represented in the third Fcder 1 office, as she was by the lu menfed Howell Cobb, ami amongst all her living children, Julian liar tridge is the man. DEATH OF HR DUNLAP SCOTT. Our last week’s isuc contained the account of the death of tlie lion. James 11. Hunter, of Bro ok s countv, and now another gallant Georgian has gone to Ids rest. The Hot). Dunlap Scott, of Floyd county, ■who died at his residence in Rome on the s'li ins ant, Was indeed a repre sent a* ive man of our best and highest type. He was tho leader of Unit true hearted minority, in theLegifTnture, which fought over evotjh inch of ground, against the frauds and pecu lations of Bullock and Kwr pang until right finally triumphed over wrong. Wo should cherish- the memory of him who had the courage to lead in tliosi dark days of despondency and general hopelessness For though he is dead, his acts and his example will confer benefits upon generations to come. Peace to his ashes ! THE GALLANT iJRDON. In the hour of victory it is becom ing and graceful to be forgiving, yet it is very rare to see one equal to such mi occasion; but we have the hero row, remarks the Sava innli Adverti s r. A battle scarred veteran, wliobs w 1 >ve for his country has bec:i,sealed on many a blood stained field, whose 8 vp,j*(J. jvas sheathed in the hist con test, when the flickering sun of our expiring came set forever and left ns at the mercy of our foes, whose voice in war was for war, but now in piping times of peace, recognizing. the duties of out;people in the hour of a moral victory, semis out, his cbiron not* 8 for peace, that must reach the heart of every good and true citizen. Our l c;q , is Senator Gordon, and his words, which we hope will be well r meinbered, were uttered at Atlanta after tire receipt of our recent decisive political victories, are reported as fol lows: “One boon I nsk in this hour of yonr de liverance. I ask ypn .to ,<u>o|mison me iu your 'liafne to pledge iinoii the floor of the Senate yonr fidelity to the Union under the Constitution: your acquiescence in the laws passed in accoidance with the Constitution, good and had. until lawfully repealed: yonr support of all rightful authority, your cor dial friendship tor every man ami all men of all sections who wjTl jud' iu flstming peace to the sections, justice to the States, liberty to the citizens, purity to all departments ol the government. Constitution to its supremacy over Presidents, Congress and parties and people. [Loud cheers.] I thank you, my countlyiueii, for that response. Y >u aie as temperate iu triumph us you were gieat ia-iidversity.” Tho.-e are the sentiments of till the true'Southern men. If all the people will o;ny take General Gorlou’<* iul vice we will soon iiave a country ns prosperous nud p.nceablo as any iu the world. tigT 1 D ><•.
