WHAT I LIVE FOR.
Til- following’ poo n slj -hiKl bo read
mid then re-read, by everyone. I is
pure gold done up in deiighlfui verse:
I live for tho*:' who love me.
For those I know are true.
For the heaven that entile* above me,
Ami awaits my i-pirit. too :
For all tinman ties that bind me,
For the ia-U)v God assigned me.
For tit' 1 Virgin ho .•* left behind me.
And the ir'ood that I can do.
1 live to learn tlieir stor;.
Who’ve suffered for mv sake.
To emnl ito their glory.
. . And follow in their wake ;
‘ ends, warty*, patriots, sages,
The noble of all ages.
Whose deeds crown history's pages,
An 1 time's great volume make.
I live to hail that season.
By gifted minds foretold.
When men shall live by rt a sou.
And not alone by gold *
When man to man united.
And every wrong thing righted,
The whole world shall be lighted,
As Eden was of old.
I live to hold communion
With all that is divine,
To feel there is a union
'Twixt nature’s heart i ! mine
To profit bv affliction, m
Reap truths from Aelds of Ac:hilt.
Grow wiser from con vie lon,
And fultlll each :.■* )go.
, I live fur those who lot e nte.
For those who know r.t true,
For the heaven that smiles above me,
And awaits my spirit, too ;
For the wrongs that need rvsistonce,
For the cause that lacks assistance,
For the future in the distance,
And the good that I can do.
An Indian in Corsets-
An Indian yesterday called into a
Woodward avenue store to sell some
baskets, and lie was so persistent that
one of the clerks finally took down
an old corset and offered it to him if
he would go away and buzz someone
else.
“What he for?" inquired Lo, as he
held up the corset.
“Put him on squaw- -make her
look gay—hero, this way,” replied the
clerk, passing the cov et around the
Indian.
“Ugh ! Him good !’’ growled Lo,
and he took the corset and went onl.
Reasoning what was good for squaw
was good for Indian, he slid into the
alley east of the avenue, dropped his
basket and started to put on the cor
set. He got it bottom side up, hind
side before, and every way but the
right one, but lie finally saw what the
matter was. Hi‘‘was two big for the
corset. He removed his coat, took
the corset strings out, and then clasp
ing the corset behind him he put the
fringe, back and tied them in front
of him, and the corset was on. He
folded up his coat, picked up his bas
ket and appeared on the stru t again,
hat slanted over his car, and his 'ook
betrying his great pride.
“Great goats! but v hat’s that?”
shouted the boys, as they caught
sight of him, ami they laughed until
they fell down.
The Indian piv h\l a most laugh
able spectacle a ho passed up the
avenue, but be stepped high and
didn’t mind the boy t, until a police
man stopped him and a crowd gath
ered. Lo then got it through his
head tlint the clerks had sold him, j
and that lie was being made fun of,
rud he unlaced (lie corset, threw it on
the sidewalk in great wrath and ex

B&T A paragraph is going m ound
telling of a girl who fell out of a win
dow while listening t- a .-renade.
This is like the joke told n Peter
Lamb, which runs thus: He was
serenading one of the Metcalf girls,
and she was leaning out of the win
dow, with shutters bowed, so that he
could not see her. Lamb’s little tune
Contained one high note, and he
struck it suddenly and with such ter
rific force that it made her jump. She
lost her foothold, fell out, and de
scribed half a summersault, one foot
hitting Mr. Lamb squrely in the face,
and tlie other smashing in the top of
,his guitar. Simply ejaculating ‘Gosh!
he leaped up from the gutter and
fled, under the impression that old
Metcalf had thrown a bedstead at
him, while Lucretia picked the catgut
and bass wood from her toes, twisted
up her back hair and went into the
house. Lamb stopped visiting her,
and last year lie married the widow
Jones, who has four children and a
cowlick.
“Six sticks of candy for five cents,
eh ?” soliloquised a boy in a store.
“Lemine see. Six sticks for five cents,
five for four, four for three, two for
one cent, one for nothin.’ 11l take
one;” and doing so left.
B®* An Evansville damsel wit
nessed a foot race between a number
of young men a few days ago, be
came disgusted with the performance,
pulled off her shoes, challenged and
the whole crowd.
A woman’s switch of hair got
into the bed some way, and her hus
band laid awake all night, shivering and
shaving, under the idea that a rattle
snake u r as curled down against his log.
When he found out the truth he
walked out of fk-a? bed-room a
whoopin’ and a cursin’ like snakes.
