that the ease would he carried to the Su

that a man as smart and shrewd a Tunis

An Explanation.
Mb. Editok: In your issue of January Sltli.
1875, I notice a very unjust attack, made on
me as Receiver of Tax Returns, iu the erst
iof the late S. W. Wilson. Now. as facts are
stubborn things, I will lay them he’oiv you
its they existed. Th- law -f th State of
i Georgia says each return Mi •'.! be serntinis -I
closely IV tile I : \ lie.'- i\vr, : and il ,: I I; is
j judgement, he shall find the properly ,m
--' braced in the returns, or any portion of it,
returned below its value, ho shall assess the
v line id once, or within taii.'y days the;. , f
t--r. It also says ‘-all ready money, note;
and open act omits shall be returned.” The
1 tie.ff. W. Wilson came to my office sick and
too f.-eble to get out. e.f his buggy, lie made
me his returns, he goes home, and in a few
days dies, and ill his trunk is found some
twelve thousand dollars not returned. I im
mediately assessed ten thousand dollars
that money, and at once wrote to the Cotup
troler General, explaining the circumstan
ces, this is his reply; “I am glad to find
you are wide awake and using your best en
deavors, to increase the Tax Returns of your
county, and if yon are satisfied that Dr. S,
XV. Wilson, your late collector, owned the
ten thousand dollars which you have taxed,
on the first day of April last, then it is your
dniy to tax the same.”
I did, as certain to niv own satisfaction,
that the money did belong to Dr. S W. Wil
son, and had beta in the house for a long
time, and there are not many .gentlemen in
this community, who are not willing to ad
mit the fact. All these facts were stated to
the Board of Commissioners, still they re
lieved the estate of Wilson of the tax, and
charge me with illegally taxing the same.
Now, il thiii- is any blame, I think it should
rest upon those who have taken from the
officers of Mclntosh County he. just dues.
As regards the fifteen dollars returned by
the Board, to Itothebilds & Adams; but a
few days prior to their making their returns
to mo, llolhchilds & Adams, went before the
Chairman of the Board of Commissioners,
and testified that their stock of merchandise
was worth six thousand dollars; they offered
to r. turn th< same to me at two thousand.
I refused to take theirretnrn, and told them
I would not take their returns short of four
j thousand dollars, and if they were dissatis
' fled to chose a man and I would do the same,
to assess their stock, in accordance with the
law, and they refused. Now the Commis-
sioners, without asking or saying one word
to me, refunded them fifteen dollars, again
accusing me of over taxing. The Commis
sioners, I suppose, have a right to release all
;his tax; but I deny their right to accuse me
unjustly. W. M. Thomas,
. Receiver of Tax Rutnrus. -

The Cask of Campbell. Tunis G. Camp- !
bell was removed from Chatham jail to At
lanta where hnb&JS corpus was to have been
argued. This was last week and as we have
heard nothing in regard to him we are of
the opinion that he has been sent to Dade
county, there to go to work with the rest of
the convicts. His name was called with the
rest of the members of tbe Georgia Legisla
ture on its organization, but of course no
response was given.
The Atlanta corr espondent of the Savan

man:
‘ The Tycoon, Campbell, is stdl in court.
Th*‘ probabilities are that the lawyers will
alone be benefiitted by his trial.

will get one that will take four men to carry
it. Beat the above turnip if you can.
