Humor asp Sarcasm.— lt is not ev
erybody who knows where to joke, or
when, or how; ami whoever is iguor
ant of'these conditions lmd bettei
not joke at all. A geatleman shout
never attempt to bi humorous at tin
expense of other people with whom
he is but slightly acquainted. In fact
it rw beiter good manners nor wise
policy to joke at anybody's expense;
that is to say,\p make anybody nn
(fOrmoVtaule, merely to raise a laugh.
Old iEsop, who was doubtless the
subject of many a gibe on account ol
Ids humped back, tells’the whole slo
ry in a fable of “The boys and the
frog's.’’ What was fun to the young
sters was death to the croakers. A
jest may cut deeper than a curse.
Some men nro so constituted that
they cannot take a friendly joke in the
same light coin, and will requite with
contumely and insult. Ne?n- banter
one of this class, or lie will brood
over his badinage long after von have
forgotten it, and i. is not prudent to
incur any one’s enmity,for uttering a
smart double entendre or a tart re
partee. Satire, however, when lev
eled at social foibles and political
evils, is not only legitimate, but com
mendable. It has shamed down more
abuses than were ever abolished by
force of logic.
My WatruVroiSf Hoots. —A corres
pondent of the Indiana Farmer says:
“I have stood in mud and water two
ar three inches deep, for b n hours a
day for a week, without feeling any
dampness, or having any difficulty in
gettiug toy boots on or off. If you
would be equally sueccslul, before
wearing the boots give the a
good coating of tallow and coal tar
und pry it in: then oil the uppers
with castor oil, about one tablespoon
fill to each boot; tlftni oil tin in twice
with castor oil, when ono teaspoonful
will be snfiieient. If tho weather
should be rainy, or yon compelled
to work in water during the day,
wash your boots clean at night, li Id
them by the fire until quite warm,
and oil them while quite wet, and you
will have no trouble about your bools
getting hard and shrinking up so
that you cannot get them on. If the
leather should become red, give a
coat of ordinary shoe blacking before
oiling. The effect of castor oil into
soften the leather, while it fills the
poregt and prevents tho water Irom
entering,”
He had Seen Kings Enough. —A
gentleman at Washington was re
quested by a friend to join him in a
visit to tho depot to witness the ar
rival of the King of the Sandwiches.
“No, sir, not much,” growled the
gentleman.
“Have you ever seen a King in
your travels ?” inquired the friend,
marveling somewhat at bis short an
swer.
replied the gentleman.
“I was once guilty of seeing three
kings.” Then, after a moment’s pause,
went on to say: “And they cost me
$l5O, sir. Those were war times,
however.”
His friend suggested ho must have
Wen in bad company.
“Well, I don’t know.” says the gen
tleman; “I thought I was in pr-tty
good company at the time. I called
to see those three kings in couipanv
with three queens, another king and
au ace spot, and have never had any
desire to see one of the royal family
since.
His friend saw the point, said lie
passed, ami shuffled on.— Cleveland

.V. young .gentleman C yours of
age, was partaking pretty freely of
the good tilings of this life at the din
ner fable, immediately after his re
turn from Sunday school. An elder
brother eight years old, after eyeing
for some time said; “Charlie, it you
were to eat much more and it should
kill you, you would weigh so much
that the angels could not carry yon
to Heaven.’ 1 Little Mx-year-old hesi
tated a moment, and then, looking
up, replied: “Well, if they coni ln’t do
it alone, God would send Samson
down to help them.”
Chicago precocity is wonderful. A
youug gentleman in the employ of
that city as a lam pi-lighter never
lights a lamp, but lie gets double pay.
He lets out each lamp to a small boy
in the neighborhood, who for tin
privilege of being allowed to light the
same pays a penny a night, and finds
own matches. This incident illus
trates aptly the passion of ttie Amer
ican citizen for municipal honors. It
will also explain to wondering moth
ers in Chicago how it is that their
sons’ pantaloons always wear out
sooner on the inside of the leg thau
elsewhere.
