LOCAL SOTS.
Boston on Saturday mold, carrying with
hint the many kind wishes of his numer
ous friends in this city. Bill made many
friends during his brief stay in Darien,
who regretted very much to say “good
bye” to him Saturday night. Bill, oi\
fellow’, we hope that we will have the pleas
ure of seeing you down this way again next
winter.
’Pul “Alligator Club” is tbe latest ago
ny in our city. Their meetings, however,
are not new, hat ing been in vogue for
some time.
- -“Citizen” is anxious to have a County
Court estaldished in Mclntosh. We would
like to hear from other citizens on this im
portant subject.
_TuE Superior Court of Mclntosh Coun
ty will convene on Thursday, the 29th in
stant. "We learn that it is the intention of
His Ilono-, Judge Tompkins-, to clear the
docket on his next visit. He is the Judge
that can do it.
We mo requested to remind the pub
lic that the supper for the benefit of the
Presbyterian Church, will certainly take
place on Wednesday night next, at the
residence of W. A. Way. The public aro
invited.
The card of the Weekly Jkg'.-iier, pub
lished at Savannah, by Mrs. r. Otto &
Hubbard, will be found in this i sue. The
LV/hsUv is a first-class family weekly and
we take pleasure in recommending it.
- It is getting to be quite lively dawn at
Doboy. There is about twenty-five ves
sels in port.
Bishop Beckwith will preach at tho
Episcopal Church on the Ridge to-mor
row at eleven o leek, and at the Metho
dist Church in the city at half past seven
o’clock p. M. liev. Mr. D niiel, of Wal
thourville, a Missionary Baptist minister,
will also preach at Mr. R. K. Walker’s
office at eleven o’clock same day.
Mr. Hanks has leased the Darien grist
mill, and will commence grinding out
bread in a few days. Success to him.
.—We are glad to see that our colored
Episcopalians are about erecting anew
Church near the office of Messrs. lipping,
Bellas & Cos. Wo wish them 'abundant
success.
Messrs. Wilcox & Cnur, hill are pro
gr sing finely with their tabby wall and
:• will b“ completed in a few days. They
are sawing down and using tho ancient
tabby buildings on Broad (Street, near ouv
office.
- The naughty troublesome sand-fly
has put in an appearance and ok, how we
do sigh for a small tornado to blow the
little pests clean across the broad Atlantic
ocean.
- The Steamer Carrie came to hand, as
usual, on Tuesday morning! This steam
™r is doing a good business and we are
glad of it,
- Just hold on a while —we’re going to
have 1h it Canal; cause Coloi c Frob and said
so, and he knows what ho knows. Tliero
is no us nfcecpfng it a secret. Darien is go
ing to be the town and the Gazette is go
ing to he the paper. The time is coming
and it is not far in the future. Since tho
above was typed wo have received a pri
vate note from Colonel Frobel tailing us to
state that those persons who promise to
pay their printer’s .bills, in “a few days,”
and never do it, are the ones that will nev
er be benefitted by any canal coming t >
Darien. Not that we need the money—no
—no, but for your own sake friends —we
advise you to come to time. How’s this for
a canal article ?
— The young lady who sent us that beau
tiful boquet, nnd note saying “I long to seo
you’’ will please not be so absent-minded
next time and direct it to Will Swan. This
way of confounding things is not likely to
keep a man in his right mind all the tune.
—IT w?s currently reported around the
city on Thursday night that one of our old
bachelors was to bo married in a few clays.
Our curiosity having been aroused we
proceeded post-haste after Web. Davis, who
bitterly denied that it was him. We next
met up with Mase Tyler, and ho denied
the charge, but asked us “what we wore go
ing to do about it,” and we t fid him we
were going to find that bachelor. But
alas, bv could not be found.
—The steamer Halcyon arrived on Tues
day last from the up-country. Capt.
Holmes informs us that the boat will re
main in Darien and undergo a thorough
overhauling. The Captain reports dull
times up the river, and says there is no
money for a boat just now.
— The Boston Ktpress says “Tho Darien
Timber Gazette is again on its loot.
Friend Grubb don’t seem to care for con
flagrations notwithstanding he was unin
sured.”
After liav ng very disagreeable
weather for several w ks past, raining has
ceased and we are again having pleasnt
weather. The freshet has disappeared
from the river, and the planters are push
ing on with their work,
<HH NTY COURT.
Edti u: Dairen G azette:— As the Spring
Term of the Superior Court of this coun
ty will soon he in session, I desire in be
half of many citizens, mil the inter, tof
this county, to bring prominently before
the present Grand Jury, the necessity cf
recommending the establishment of a
County Court for the connty*bf M .-lutosh.
By the law, they aro v ;ied with the power
of establishing said Court, and, also, to
recommend the Juflbc to the Governor of
the State for appointment and Lis com
mission. The advantages of a County
Court are those: Ist. It ;s a mon v saving
Court for the county! In this to-wit: That
it-will take from the Superior Court, two
thirds of the criminal cases ! All cases of
misdemeanor, that is below tho grade of
fidonys, are triable an 1 punishable before
and bv the County Judge; whereas, as it
now stands, all criminals, however small
the offence with which lie is charged, are
either bound over to the Superior Court,
to answer the charge, or else committed
to jail to await the setting of the Court.
Now, it has been estimated that every case
of misdemeanor, tried before the Superior
Court costs the county fifty dollars, and
it has also boon estimated, that the Supe
rior Court cannot try and dispose of lucre
than two cases pier day, consequently, it
costs the county one hundred dollars per
day to run the Superior Court. 2nd. The
other advantage to he derived from the
said Court, is the speediness ■ with which
that class-of criminals are brought io trial,
and thereby exerting a benign and salu
tary influence over the morals of the
county, for there is nothing so effective
as a fear of a speedy trial and a summary
punishment. As an evidence of this, I
point you to those countries where the
laws are eitforc jd sue 'lily.
It is true, Mr. Editor, there must ho
some expense attending the establishment
and support of the Court, t . wit: A good
and competent salary must bo recommen
ded by the Grand Jury for the Ju ut
his salary would bo but a email •:>•. •,
compared with that which it would; me
the county, by with! .wing <’=•,, n tho .Su
perior Court all the* cuss triable
before the County Court. In' Liberty
county, for instance, the County Judge
has a salary of one thousand dollars. 'The
Court was established last M iy: ; )s received
his commission, and commenced business
about the first of July; since that time, he
has tried ana disposed of -me eighty
criminal case?:, which if they wore tried
in the Superior Court, would have (at
tho rate of fifty dollars for each, case)
cost the county of Liberty, four thousand
dollars; now, let ussee what ii trial
the eighty cases did cert; from tin cost,
which would have followed in the Superior
Court deduct one thousand doll-r*, the
amount of the Judge’s salary, and you
hare the amou: 1 1 v.\l to tlm county, ind
that is not alb i;>; to the three thousand
dollars, you muG odd llmia of, say only
one third, (an 1 that L a v> ry .small pro
portion) and you will find it greatly in
creased. Now these:u fiats which I call
tho attention of our Grand Jury to, and
ask in behalf of peace and good order,
and, in behalf of the tax-payers, to con
sider, and investigate the propriety and
necessity of establishing a Ccran'.y Court
for ILTntoah county. “Citizen.”

Tise Timber .Market.
Tho following is from the Savannah
Xeics. \s"e will state that very little tim
ber is coming down, and but few rafts
have arrived within the last week:
“There seems to be no aba tom cut in
what the cutters call the ‘timber pan:,;.’
Our last accounts from Darien estimate
that more than three bund re 1 thousand
dollars worth is lying in the river at tint
point awaiting a rise in prices, and more is
going down everyday. This large accu
mulation of timber does not represent any
combination formed for tho purpose of
forceing an advance in prices. It is held
for the simple reason that to sell it now
will be to sacrifice .the result cf many
weeks of hard and anxious labor.
In view of the fact that a rise in prices
seems to be as far off as ever, we would
advise cutters, as the best;possible remedy
for a very disheartening condition of affairs
to hold on to what they have as 1- mg as
possible, and to cease cutting, at least for
the'present. Farming is a imu'i safer
investment than cutting timber, a 1 tb”
