AGU ICULTLT R E. thilfM Sugar Cline—Ei’iiun iniral plan of Faltcuin;’ 11 of' Willi Corn. , Editors Southern Cultivator:— In raising hogs in this section of the country, where so little attention is de voted to the growing of clover and the grasses, there is a period, say from the middle of August to the midd'e of Oo tober, betwoen the exhausting of the grains left in the harvest fields and die gathering of corn and opening of the pen fields, in which corn Is pea co and high, and in consequence, feeding stock hogs is very expensive This gap can be economica'ly and conveni ntly filled up with Chinese Sugar Cane. My plan is, to plant a patch of Sugar Cane at some point convenient to the pas'ures, where the hogs wi 1 be running at the time, (' no acre on good land will ho enough f r 7 5 hogs, little and big,) and commence feeding as soon as the heads commence turning dark, cutting inly the ripest— going ov.r the ground several times. The late stalks and suckers will push lip and rip n rapidly, after the riper ones are cut. At this time my hogs are growing and fattening in a most remarkable degree. They get no il ing but sugar cane and crab grass from the harvest fields to which they have access. One stalk of sugar cane including the head, is nearly equal o an ear of corn. Most writers will tell you it is best to grind and cook corn bet re feeding to fattening hogs They say it is eco nomical to do so. which I think very doubtful. Now let us see what it costs to grind corn f r hogs. First, one eighth toll f r grinding ; secondly ,the expense of shcllin * and carrying to mill; to this, add the unavoidabl e was to in feeding meal, and you will have an ther eighth. Then, if it cost twenty-five per cent to bed ground corn, it ought to be much bct - er, to make it pay. Cooking is not objec tionable, but few of oar farmers are prepared for it. My plan, (which I learned from an emhettly practical and fucc'ssV farmer,) supercedes the necessity of hoth 4 cooking and grinding. It is this : place near the hog pen two vessels, either barrels or hogsheads, according to the number of hogs ; fill up with corn in the ear ; then fill up with water; fed out one Vessel, and as soon as emptied fill up again, and commence on the other, and so on the object being so soften and sour the corn. A little syrup may be added at first, so start fermentation. A short experience will soon show how long the corn ought *.o soak, as the soak ing process must not be carried too far as the object will be defeated by con verting the sugar contain and in the corn first into alcohol and finally into vine gar. Now for the advantages of this plan. First, the corn, by soaking is softened, and hence more easily mas.icated ; sec ondly, by souring, is more easily di gested and converted into fat; thirdly, it can be f'd on the ground, the usual way, without wasting a grain—the whole process costing nothing, when compared with either cooking or gjmsftng," “JUCUNDA.” Keepings weft Potatoes. Editors Southern Cultivator : We are s fferiDg drought, (and no ap pearence of raiD now,) to such an extent that few persons can make enough to do them longer than Christmas—many not so long— l mean with cotton to help out, for it is almcs’ a f ilure. I believe I promised to give you my plan of keeping Potatoes, which is the cheap st I think, aud certainly the safest I’ve ever seen tried. Ibuild a pen of logs, any desired length, and fiv; feet wide, (this le sens the risk from bulking,) four to six feet high, hew it down evenly on the inside, so that the walls maybe ceiled or daubed smoothly, cover the whole with a good roof, and have a small door in the . nd. When this is doao, raise the bettorn with stone five or six inches high, cover these with dry sand, to keep them from cutting the pi tatocs, which m y now bi put in, beginning in the middle. Three or four inches of dry sand must be plac ed between them and the wall. I some times have a plat k fr this purpose, raising it up as the potatoes are put in. keeping the space between the plank and the wall well fi led ia with the sand, which will run down through the pota toes as the plank is ifretd. Let them remain so uotiil freezing weather, when you can readily cover them with the dry sand, deep enough to keep them from being chilled. Borne attention may be necessary for awhile, ts the sand will continue to disperse i'self among tLetn, and leave the top naked. There should be no leaks in the roof. There is but ditile waste in the sand when once pro cured. Like the bouse, it is always ready, and at the spot. Hence, the cheapness of the plan. The philosophy of the plan, is the uniform temperature it ensures, while it absorbs, nod carries off the excessive moisture that may be in the potato. I have tried this plan satisfactory frr 20 years successively. It was suggested to my mind by seeing how« rooting up souDd potatoes in the ring. spYours, ruly, W. T- COLQUITT. Rockyvalby, Carroll co., Ga., Any. (ith, 1860. P. S.—Will someone give the exact mode of keeping potato vines through the winter for tnenext spring’s planting? Wii.kf.B Booth.—Wilkes Booth’s body is supper 6 1 to be in Europe, still inhabited by the soul of Wilkes Booth. The party whom, “Boston Corbett” so heroically shot, and whose body, Stan ton refused to exhibit to any one that ever saw Booth, was a poor wretch hir ed by the assasins to personate Booth, in order to facilliate the escapo of the latter. A wag says that he aud Iris wife al ways go to bed quarreling, and yet says he, “with all our differances, we never fall out; A fashionable young lady may be said to resemble a prudent housekeep er, because her waist is ■« tittle as she can makwit.
