Purpose and Pluck. BY ANNETTE L. NOEI.E. Tom and Henry Melton had the misfortune to have a drunken fa- j thcr. He might have kept his family iu comfort, for ho had a good trade us carpenter, but every cent he , made went for strong drink, until at last he died of delirium tremens. Torn and Henry wore bright hoys, and felt the disgrace so deeply that their poor mother feared they would give up till attempts to make anything of themselves. Torn said nobody expected any good of them or would be likely to help them; but Henry was w.sor. One night ho lay awake thinking, and the next daj- lie had a plan to propose to Tom. “You know Tom,” said ho, “'there is father’s old shop right hero in the yard, and all his tools. Now, wo are strong, healthy boys, and wo have been in the shop enough to learn a great deal. Sup pose we go right to work tmd finish -.every old job ho left undone that wo etui possibly do. There tire those -chairs Mrs. Wells wanted mended. Father has had them in the shop since last summer, Wo could mend those, lam sure. The hook case Mr. Newton loft is a nicer job, hut I would not he surprised if Masters (father’s old workman) would give us a hand on this or show ns how to do it ourselves. He looked very sorry for mother the day he came in after the funer al. 1 believe if wo let folks know wo are trying, wo can earn some thing. Who wants to sit down lazy or ho beggars, or have the family all split up?” Tom was quite willing to fall m with the plan. It was better than looking for outside work and having people talk of his father to him. Their mother only shook her head doubtfully. Poor woman! she had grown so used to he disappointed in everything that all she said was, “Try it, of course; if you fail, it can’t be worse than it is now: if you succeed, it would be a great help.” Next day the boys went early to work, and before night all Mrs. Welles’ chairs were strongly mend ed. Masters came in to see the bookcase, and gave his help and advice for a few minutes every day until each unfinished piece of work in the shop was douo anil sent homo. He told of the hoys’ under taking far and wide, and their man ly effort to help themselves interest ed people in their behalf. Main land neighbors hunted up broken furniture aud seut it to the shop. Some trusted them with quite largo ! undertakings, and found they did their best to please. It was not long before those two boys of fifteen and seventeen earned more than poor intemperate father had earn ed for years. No one thought any the loss of them either for seeing over their work-bench iu the shop a temperance pledge drawn tip atul signed by each of them. -You do not know how eonfcrtable and hap py their mother’s life became. She often said it was true that God al ways helped those who did their lw*t to help themselves.— S. S. Visitor. * •- —Monticello has abolished the sale of liquor. The two bar-keep ers of the town proposed to the couuei! that if they would never grant another license iu the town they would give up their licenses, which was done. What a delight it is to Seaa bright, energetic boy, who is always wiiling to work, and never has a word to say against doing whatever he is told. Such a boy can always feel assured of the confidence of good people, and generally has a much easier time than the boy who is continually fretting aud snarling, or playing and hindering others from work. The boy who is faith ful and trustworthy will have two friends to the other’s one, arrd nev er need fear that he is alone in the world for his friends w ill be of the kind who will always speak a good word for him, and his name will he souuded abroad as a boy who may be entrusted with anything. On the contrary, of the boy who needs constant w atching, it is not so. He may have friends, hut they are not the kind who are agreeable to the industrious boy. As you read this think, “To which class do I belong ?” aud if to the latter, change your course at once, and join the ranks of the faithful and true, and then you can feel that yon arc on the right side. ‘•• • - —lt is till nonsense to croak about the times, and declare that religious faith is going to the dogs.
