YOUTH’S DEPARTMENT.
Discii illicit for lloncstj.
A gentleman had placed his son
with a merchant, and for a season
nil went well. But at length the
yonng man sold a dress to a lady,
and as he was folding it up, he ob
server! a flaw in the silk, and re
marked, “Madaftie, I deeen it my
duty to tell you there is a fracture
in the silk.” This spoiled the bar
gain.
The merchant overheard the re
mark. Had he reflected n moment
he might have reasoned thus with
himself: “Now lam safe while my
affairs are committed to the hands
of an honest clerk.” But he was
not pleased, and so he wrote to
the father to come and take the boy
home; for, said he, “he will never
make a merchant! '
Tae father, who had brought up
his son with the strictest care, was
not a little surptised and grieved,
and hastening to the city said, “and
why will he not make a merchant?"
“Because ho has no tact. Only
a day or two since, he .oluntarily
told a lady who was buying silk,
that the goods weie damaged, and
so I lost the bargain. Purchasers
must look out for themselves. If
they cannot discover flaws, it will
be foolishness in me to tell them of
their existence.”
“And is this all the fault?”
“Yes; he is very well in other re
spects.”
“Then I love n:v son better than
ever, and I thanli you for telling
me of the matter; I would not have
him in your store another day for
the world.”
Give, the Itoysu Trade.
Go where you will, and yon will
find youths entering manhood with
out any equipment for the struggle
before them. Tens of thousands
of them hope to become merchants
when they have no aptitude what
ever for commercial ntfiurs and are
doomed to lives of bitter toil and
grinding poverty. This ought not
to be. Everybody in America is
justly entitled to a trade and ho
ought to have the chance to master
one. Many sons of poor parents
and many orphan boys aro com
pelled to forego tire inestimable
benefits of apprenticeship, and
those ought to be assisted l>y wise
philanthropic-, but very many
more fail to improve the great
opportunity of becoming a skilled
worker, and so drift into the la
boring army to become helpless
victims of poverty all their lives.
Hoys in town and country, learn a
trade. It will ho your surest and
best friend through life. Parents,
in whatever else you come short,
don’t fail to see to this matter.
You will be ensuring th > happiness
and comfort of your sous, the wel
fare of those who come after them,
and discharging a solemn duty you
owe to society and the country.
Itcniliuir Aloud,
It is strange that in a country
whose language is stored full of the
choicest works of the human mind,
and whose population is, as a
whole, so Well educated, reading al
oud as a source of amusement and
means of enjoyment is so little re
sorted to. There are many fami
lies—even in book loving New En
gland, there are scores of families,
we dare say, where a book, or a
chapter of a book, is never read
to the family circle from one end
of the year to another. The indi
vidual members of the family read,
but all reading done in the family
is silent reading. Father has his
paper; mother her tract; Mary
her novel; Johnny his story of
wild adventures. Heading, there
is enough of it; but each one reads
for himself. There is no reading
for the whole, and no grouping ol
the family into an audience for an
evening’s enjoyment, such ns comes
to people who hear a good bit of
writing well read.
Only those who have visited in
familes where the gift of reading
was cultivated asa source of family
enjoyment, and the custom of read
ing aloud to the family practiced,:
can imagine what a help and bless
ing to the family life such a habit
is. Music is well enough in its
way, but its range of expression is
far narrower thau Unit of reading,
aud for that matter far less praeti
eal in its adaptation to the family
wants. Then, too, singing re
quires an instrumental aeconsinini
ment, anil a piano easts money and
requires too much practice on the
part ot the performer to In* availa
ble for the many. The ait of read
ing well is easily acquired and
cheaply taught, and the express
ions of literature are abundant and
varied. If sorrow has fallen on the
family, the needed antidote oan lie
found both in prose and poetry,
Tf fun is called for. then fuu can be
had at the askin ;; for the language
is full of humor so quaint and sub
tile that the hare recital of the au
thor’s words tilings the point out
anil “sets the table in a roar.' 1 His
tory, tragedy, comedy, wit. patln s,
sublimity—every sq iingat which
the human mind loves to driuk, can
be opened, and the sweet waters hi
given freely to every one.
How cosy those home leadings
may be made! Warmth, light, com
panionship, culture, happiness, are
all included in them. Next to the
impulse of love as a means of draw
ing families together is the infln-j
ence of intellectual companionship.
I Cultivate this, good friends, and j
see hew satisfactory will be the re
sult.—The Golden Bole.

Have a Hweet Voice, Gi ma. —
Were half the pains which is often
takento cultivate the voice in song
bestowed upon its tones as used in
speeb, social intercourse would
gain a very great charm. We hear
harsh, metallic voices, which are
cracked, a discord running through
their cadences. Nobody can be
where a number of ladies are gath
ered witliot being struck by the
lack < f culture w hich is evidenced
in disagreeable voices. A sweetly
modulated voice in conversation is
delightful and restful. In educa
ting the young, example is more
potential than precept; and if moth
ers and teachers always spoke with
gentleness, and were careful to let
their voice be clear and distinct,
dropping from their lips like finish
ed coin, a great benefit would ac
crue to the attractiveness of social
intercourse.
•
Notice the Quiet Girls. —Noisy
girls are often very lovable, and
have their uses, and all quiet girls
are not endowed with genius and
virtues, for some are simply fools
w ho would he noisy enough if they
could find anything to say. But
we protest against the habit which
prevails of slighting quiet girls and
speaking ill of them before they
have been fairly tried, and of pay
ing sickening homage to the con
cel ed chatter boxes of little moral
sense and principle. While* noisy
damsels will often turn out to he
gaudy imposters, many quiet ones
will amply repay the time, trouble
and love which any one may bestow
upon them.
—Caution the young men that
their work is not in the future, but
lying at their door now. The only
loyal way to progress is to do the
duty of the hour in the best manner
possible; neglect it, and all is mist
and darkness; for we rise step by
step.

During the many years that the Pacific Guano Company has
inarm fact uml and sold its well known brand of
SOLUBLE PACIFIC Gill,
Various parties, being aware of the great popularity of this
Fertilizers, bjtve, from time to time, put into market articles
hearing names as nearly like that of onr brand as was safe for
them to do, probably relying upon the fact that said Soluble Pa
cific Guano was very commonly spoken of by the planters as
'Pacific, or ‘Guano, or ‘Soluble Pacific,’ or ‘Pacific Guano.’——
1 hese attempts have failed to build up a permanent trade,
probably because of the fact, that the parties so appropriating
onr name relied upon that name, rather than the quality of their
goods. We have from time to time called the attention of
planters to these facts, either directly or through the late John
S. Reese, hsq., of Baltimore We are informed that one or
more new brands are now being put upon the market, contain-,
