FRIDAY MORNING, MAY H, 1888.
YOUTH’S DEPARTMENT.
SOMEBODY'S MOT IIE It.
t B JtECITI'J 111 CIS 1 11.1 IASI*.
Tile woman was old, ami anil gray.
And bi-ill with Lite chill of the winter day.
Thi' street was wet with a recent snow,
Anil the woman's foot were aged and slow.
Site stood at the crossing nml waited long,
Alone, uucared for amid tlie timing
Of human beings who passed her by,
Nor heeded the glance of her anxious eye.
Down the street, with laughter and shout,
Glad of thee freedom of "sliool let out,"
Come the boys, liken flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow piled w iliti- and deep.
Past the w oman so old and gray
Hastened the children on their way.
Nor offered a helping Imnd to her
mi meek, so timid, afraid to stir
Lest the carriage wheels or the lenses’ feet
Should crowd her down on the slippery
street.
At last came one of the meiry troop-
The bravest laddie of ail the group I
He paused la-side her and whispered low,
"i’ll help you amiss if you wish logo.”
Her aged hand on Ins strong young arm
She placed, and so, without hurt or harm,
lie guided the trembling feet along,
Proud tlinl his own were firm and strong.
Then hack again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy and well content
" She’s somebody's mother, boys, you know,
For all she's poor, and aged, and slow;
And I hope some follow will lend a hand
To help my mother, you understand
If ever she's poor, and old, and gray,
When her own dear hoy is far away,”
And “somebody's mother” bowed low Iter
head
In her home that night, and the prayer she
said
Was, “God lie kind to Hie nolde hoy,
Who is somebody's non aiul pride mid joy I"
HOW TO TREAT A BOY.
Get hold of the boy's heart.
Yonder locomotive comes like a
whirlwind down the track, and u
regiment of armed men might ttcek
to arrest it in vain. It would crush
thorn and plunga unheeded on.
But there is a little lever in its me
clmuism, that at the pressure of a
man’s hand will slacken its speed,
and in a moment or two bring it
panting and still, like a whipped
spaniel, at your feot. Ily (ho same
litttlo lover tho vast atemnor is gui
ded hither and yonder upon die
sea, in spite of adverse wind or
current. That sousitive and re
sponsive spot by which a. boy’s life
is controlled, is his heart. Willi
your grasp firmly nml gently on
that helm, yon may pilot him
whither you will. Never doubt
that he lias a heart. Bad and
wilfull boys very often have the
oendereat hearts hidden away some
where beneath incrustations of sin
or behind barricades of pride.
And it ia Vpnr business to get at
that heart, yet hold of that heart,
keep hold of jt by sympathy, con
fiding in himi manife ally working
only for his gefod by little indirect
kindnesses to his mother or sister,
or even his pdt dog. See him at
bis into yours.
